Part 1 of a new series exploring the extraordinary places that shape Bad Gastein - The Art of the Salon.
There are few places more fascinating than a great hotel salon. Neither entirely public nor entirely private, they have always occupied a world of their own. A place where life unfolds between arrival and departure. Where travellers, locals, artists, writers, old friends and mysterious guests cross paths. A meeting place and melting pot for people from all around the world, where every conversation has the potential to become the beginning of something unexpected.
As the birthplace of the Alpine Grand Hotel, Bad Gastein has a rich history of salon culture and has cultivated it for well over a century.
Long before hotel lobbies became fashionable destinations in their own right, they were the social heart of Europe’s grand hotels. A perfectly balanced cocktail. A newspaper left on a velvet armchair. A piano playing softly in the background. Watching people come and go, each carrying a story of their own. That culture never left Bad Gastein.
The best hotel bars have never been about drinking alone. Every table tells a different story. Every evening belongs to someone else. Unexpected encounters remind us to love life, to celebrate friendship, love itself, and those rare moments that deserve to be remembered.
Few Alpine destinations move so effortlessly between wilderness and cosmopolitan elegance. While the days belong to crystal-clear springs, mountain trails and the vast wilderness of the Hohe Tauern National Park, the evenings reveal another side of the town. One of beautifully designed hotels, intimate bars, remarkable restaurants and inspiring interiors that invite you to linger long after dinner has ended.
It is entirely possible to spend the morning in hiking boots on an untouched mountain ridge and end the day in a tuxedo or evening gown, with a perfectly balanced Martini in one of the town’s historic design hotels. That contrast is part of Bad Gastein’s identity.

Manche Wanderungen führen durch die Berge. Andere erzählen die Geschichte einer ganzen Region.
Der „Kulinarische Almspaziergang“ lädt zu einer genussvollen Entdeckungsreise durch Sportgastein, mitten im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Nur wenige Minuten vom lebendigen Ortszentrum Bad Gasteins entfernt eröffnet sich eine völlig andere Welt: weite Almflächen, beeindruckende Gipfelkulissen und urige Almhütten, in denen alpine Tradition seit Generationen gelebt wird.
Gemeinsam geht es von Hütte zu Hütte. Dort erwarten Sie regionale Spezialitäten, direkt von den Bauern und Produzenten der Region. Hausgemachter Käse, Speck, frisches Brot, traditionelle Mehlspeisen und viele weitere Köstlichkeiten erzählen vom Handwerk, der Landschaft und den Menschen, die diese Kulturlandschaft bis heute prägen.
Jeden Freitag im Juli und August. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist begrenzt. Eine Anmeldung ist bis spätestens 12:00 am Vortag erforderlich.

Some mountains invite you to simply slow down.
The journey begins long before the first step, as the Graukogel chairlift climbs the mountain at its own gentle pace, almost untouched by time. No rush. And with every metre gained, the sound of Bad Gastein’s roaring waterfall gradually fades until only birdsong remains.
At the top awaits one of Bad Gastein’s most extraordinary natural treasures: an ancient Stone Pine forest — the Zirbenwald — unique in the Gastein Valley. Some of these remarkable trees have stood here for centuries, shaped by harsh alpine winters, relentless winds, and an exceptionally slow pace of growth. Their twisted trunks and sculptural silhouettes tell stories that span generations.
The Zirbe (Stone Pine) is far more than just another alpine tree. Growing at the very edge of where forests can survive, it develops exceptionally dense, fragrant wood rich in essential oils. Its unmistakable scent has accompanied mountain life for centuries and is said to promote deep relaxation and restful sleep. Scientific studies have even shown that spending time around Zirben may help lower the heart rate.
Following the Zirbenweg (Stone Pine Trail), beautifully crafted benches, loungers, and sculptural installations made from the trees‘ own wood invite you to pause rather than simply pass through. There is no need to hurry here. The mountain quietly encourages something we rarely allow ourselves anymore: to sit, breathe deeply, and simply listen.
Some places stay with you long after you’ve left. The Graukogel is one of them.

High above Bad Gastein, nestled in the Graukogel, lies the Palfner See — a pristine alpine lake that ranks among the most beautiful in the Gastein Valley. While the hike requires a little effort, you can shorten the ascent by taking the Graukogel chairlift, leaving around 90 minutes of walking through one of the most enchanting mountain landscapes in the region.
The trail winds past centuries-old stone pines called Zirbe, carpets of moss, and ancient lichens — remarkable organisms formed by the symbiosis of fungi and algae. Some of the bright yellow species found here grow by as little as 0.1 millimetres per year, meaning a patch the size of your hand may have been quietly growing for several thousand years.
Then, almost unexpectedly, the Palfner See appears. Crystal clear, intensely blue and framed by rugged alpine peaks, it feels almost untouched by time. Even in summer, patches of snow often linger along its shores, while the icy water invites the brave to take a refreshing swim after the climb.
It is one of those rare places that reminds you how extraordinary the Alps can are — wild, peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful.

Join us for the opening weekend of sommer.frische.kunst., from 2–5 July, as the festival returns for its 16th edition.
For sixteen summers, festival director Andrea von Goetz and the tourism board of Bad Gastein have transformed Bad Gastein into one of the Alps‘ most compelling destinations for contemporary art—a place where artists, collectors, curators and visitors gather not merely to experience culture, but to become part of it.
As part of the international Artist in Residence programme, nine artists have spent the past weeks immersed in Bad Gastein’s remarkable landscape, architecture and atmosphere, developing new works shaped by their time here. Their exhibitions will be unveiled during the festival’s opening weekend on Saturday, 4 July, at the iconic Kraftwerk beside the waterfall.
Across Bad Gastein, the festival unfolds through a rich programme of solo exhibitions featuring renowned artists and leading galleries, including presentations at the famous Radon Pavilion, the art fair ASTORIA curated x art:badgastein, performances, talks, book launches, dinners, parties and unexpected encounters in extraordinary settings. Historic grand hotels, former power stations and public spaces become the backdrop for a cultural landscape unlike any other.
