Sayings of the Scholars | This World and the Hereafter

Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak (RA) said: “The increase of your share in the Hereafter can only be achieved through the decrease of your attachment to this world, and the increase of your worldly share can only come at the expense of your Hereafter.”[1]

Message: A person’s heart cannot make both this world and the Hereafter its primary goal at the same time. The more we occupy our hearts with worldly matters, the farther we move from the Hereafter. Therefore, let us take from this world only what we need and make the Hereafter the ultimate purpose of our lives.

Daily Hadith | The Consequences of Extremism (Ifrat)

Muhammad ibn Sirin (RA) said that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Those who go to extremes in speech and behavior have perished; those who go to extremes and delve excessively into religious matters have perished.” [1]

Hadith Message: Religion is a path of peace and worship, not one of affectation and excess. We should be moderate in our speech and conduct, because extremism distances the heart from the simplicity and beauty of worship.

Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) Summoned to the Court of Abu Jafar al-Mansur
Caliph al-Mansur ordered that Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) be summoned from Kufa to Baghdad. He instructed Isa ibn Musa to immediately summon Imam Abu Hanifa (RA). The Imam was brought from Kufa to Baghdad and presented before the caliph. There, he was offered the position of Chief Judge (Qadi al-Qudat) and other key positions in the Abbasid Caliphate. Although considerable efforts were made to win the Imam's approval, he apologized and declined, despite the repeated insistence. Finally, Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) told al-Mansur: “I do not consider myself qualified for the position of judge.”...

In the Eastern Roman Empire, social disorder had reached its peak. Despite the difficulties faced by the general population, taxes and bribery had also multiplied several times. The confiscation and seizure of people's property was another calamity that had caused people to become deeply resentful and angry with the government, to the extent that they preferred accepting any foreign government over their own. Widespread confrontations and strikes took place for this reason. In 532 CE, three thousand people were killed in a clash in the capital.

Despite the urgent need for frugality in living expenses, people had fallen deeply into extravagance and had reached the extreme of wasteful spending. Acquiring wealth by any possible means and spending it on pleasure and sensual indulgence had become the sole aspiration of many individuals. The foundations of virtue and the principles of morality had collapsed. In an effort to free themselves from restraints in satisfying their sexual desires, people preferred a single life over married life. As Sismondi states: “Justice was bought and sold like a commodity in the marketplace, while treachery and bribery were encouraged by the society of that time.”...
