PERIL OF INORDINATE AMBITION

KEY VERSE:
"Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him." - (1 KINGS 1:5).

TEXT: 1 KINGS 1:1-13

Dwight Lyman Moody, an American evangelist, in one of his sermons, stated, "Satan rules all men that are in his kingdom. Some he rules through lust. Some he rules through covetousness. Some he rules through appetite. Some he rules by their temper, but he rules them. And none will ever seek to be delivered until they get their eyes open and see that they have been taken captive."

From our text, Adonijah, the fourth son of David, after Amnon, Chileab and Absalom, was caught in the web of ungodly ambition. Amnon, the first son, who had an unholy affair with his sister, Tamar, had already been killed, while Absalom, the third son, who staged a coup against his father, was also killed.

Nothing was known of Chileab, David's second son, born to him by Abigail, widow of Nabal the Carmelite. Adonijah, who wanted to become king instead of Solomon, was the oldest son still alive. Therefore, Adonijah thought he would be the next king, after his father, David, who was very old. He made plans towards achieving his course. He knew his father would soon die, and he got the support of Joab, David's military commander, and Abiathar the priest to make him king. But Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah and David's bodyguards refused to support him. Adonijah still went ahead with his selfish ambition, planning a ceremony where he would declare himself the new king. Nobody can run faster than God. Adonijah's inordinate ambition led to his premature death. Solomon did not even fight for the fulfilment of God's promise that he would succeed his father.

Whatever God has ordained for you must come to pass, the machinations of enemies notwithstanding. He knows how to thwart the conspiracy of darkness against your job, business, promotion and family. Pray and trust God. Be it further noted that a child of God must never resort to self-management and carnal display in governing his or her affairs. Once in Christ, we are to trust Him with our entire life span, confident that He who saved us knows what is best for us in time and eternity. Your lot, therefore, is to simply trust Him to the uttermost.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Ungodly ambition is a gilded misery.

NOT A TALL ORDER 📓

TEXT:HEBREWS 13:15-17`

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased" (HEBREWS 13:16).

Asking persecuted persons in an evil world to rejoice and do good and not seek retaliation would appear an insensitive charge. To plead with them to share with others of the little left to them by those maltreating them would sound callous. Counselling them, finally, to honour spiritual leaders teaching them all these acts of restraint amid death-dealing challenges would seem a tall order impossible to meet.

Not so for the Hebrews in diaspora, receiving these instructions from the writer of the epistle. It was not a tall order. They knew their calling as saved, sanctified and Spirit-filled Christians who had been taught to follow the footsteps of their Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. He was reviled and pierced; He did not hit back. He was poor, but He still made many rich and sufficient as He met their needs. He respected the temple leaders by urging His disciples and the people to observe their laws, but not to imitate their deeds. It was also not unusual to ask the Hebrews to rejoice and be grateful to God in times of hardship. Their Redeemer always looked up gratefully to heaven when in dire depths.

The way Christians can convince the world of their total and true deliverance from the carnal habits of vindictiveness, ingratitude, rebelliousness and selfishness is to display the exact opposite of these vices in their lives. Our preaching will be more persuasive and penetrating if it is aided by our noble actions in line with Christ's teachings. We are to be intentionally determined to express the new nature the Lord's death and resurrection gave us. Our salvation is hollow without impactful works accompanying it.

Christ's expectations from His followers today are precisely captured in this last chapter of the epistle to the suffering Jewish Christians outside Jerusalem. He is watching out for those who would not compromise in a world filled with hatred, contempt and calumny for those who choose to faithfully stick to the narrow way. We must not disappoint Him.

✍🏽 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God's presence with you in the fire makes the fire harmless.

HAPPY SUNDAY FAMILY!!

DAILY MANNA (For Adults):
FRIDAY, 4TH SEPTEMBER, 2026.

TOPIC: A REPUTATION FOR TRUTH.

TEXT: PSALM 119:25-32.

KEY VERSE: “Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously. I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me” (Psalm 119:29,30).

MESSAGE:
At a county fair, a distinctively dressed Quaker offered a horse for sale. A non-Quaker farmer asked its price, and since Quakers had a reputation for fair dealing, he bought the horse without hesitation. The farmer got the horse home, only to discover it was lazy and ill-tempered, so he took it back to the fair the next day. There he confronted the Quaker. “Thou hast no complaint against me,” said the Quaker. “Had thou asked me about the horse, I would have told thee truthfully the problems, but thou didst not ask.” “That’s okay,” replied the farmer, “I don’t want you to take the horse back. I want you to try to sell him to someone else.

Heaven-bound believers are not allowed to be like the Quaker in the above story. Believers must have a reputation for telling the truth. Our Bible text portrays the believer as someone who abhors lying and chooses the way of truth deliberately. There is no middle ground of neutrality between truth and falsehood. If you are not in the way of truth, then definitely you are in the way of error. Men do not just drop into the right way by chance; they must choose it and continue therein or else wander away from it. Also highlighted in the text is the fact that there is a practical way of holiness which we must diligently follow, in spite of the odds we might face.

As believers in Christ, we must live up to divine expectation. Interestingly, the Spirit of God in us will not lead us in the way of error and falsehood. So, we must be careful not to learn sinful habits of joking with lies and deceit. The devil does not consider lies as jokes because he is a liar and the author of it.

Choosing the way of truth begins with a salvation experience and continues with abiding in Christ, His word and fellowship with fellow believers. Each of us must have the purpose of mind like Daniel to follow the way of truth, speak the truth and stand for the truth always.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Truth transforms, prevails and blesses.

POWER EVANGELISM 📓

TEXT: ACTS 5:12-16

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch" (ACTS 5:12).

The revered teacher and author, Martyn Lloyd Jones, was quoted as saying, "It is perfectly clear that in New Testament times, the gospel was authenticated in this way by signs, wonders and miracles of various characters and descriptions... Was it only meant to be true of the early church? ... The Scriptures never anywhere say that these things were only temporary - never! There is no such statement anywhere." Signs and wonders heralded by purity are the insignia of the Church Age.

Our text details the supernatural flow of power from believers in the early church to accomplish divine counsel. The downpour of pentecostal power on those early believers led to an unprecedented ingathering of souls who would ordinarily not believe the gospel. Expectedly, "many signs and wonders were wrought among the people". More staggering was the result that followed the miracles: "Believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women". It is obvious then that the divine, unassailable purpose of power manifestation principally is to shatter the shell of disinterest, shame the jeers of cynicism, and smash the shield of false religion. Power heralds the word of grace, softens the hardened heart, and wings the gospel into the heart of sinners. Wherever the true soul-saving gospel is preached, the miraculous comes to authenticate it to the glory of God.

Many believers today think that miracles are on par with the word of His grace. That is a fallacy. Signs and wonders do not save. They are not the power of God unto salvation; the gospel is! God's power to work wonders neither competes with His Word nor contradicts it. It is not above the Word, either. Signs, wonders and miracles are divine witnesses to the value, necessity, and centrality of the Word.

You have the privilege of a beautiful blend of benefits for a God-pleasing life and fruitful service today. The word of His grace that emphasises and teaches the necessity of the new birth and the purity of life is at your disposal. Added to this is the promise of enduement with power to confirm the Word in soul-winning, which follows a consecrated thirst and tarrying to receive.

✍🏽 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Power evangelism is a necessary validator of the gospel even today.

PLACE OF SAFETY

KEY VERSE: "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him." - (NAHUM 1:7).

TEXT: NAHUM 1:7-15

During the September 11, 2001, attacks, as chaos unfolded in New York City, emergency responders guided people to safety in underground shelters and secure locations. Many who found refuge survived while others who had nowhere to run perished. Again, Japan experienced a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Cities were submerged and thousands lost their lives. Amid the chaos, one of the most secure places was the high ground where people fled for safety. Those who reached the strongholds survived while those who hesitated were swept away.

In moments of disaster, a place of safety makes the difference between life and death. Life is full of storms – uncertainties, persecutions, bereavements, failures, tragedies, betrayals, and trials. The question is, where do you run when trouble comes? Our key verse declares, "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him." God is good and He knows those who trust in Him. He is not distant or indifferent. He is a personal refuge for those who seek Him through Jesus Christ.

Our passage, a prophetic utterance, was originally a warning to Nineveh and a comfort to Judah. While the world around them was unstable, God remained their stronghold. The Assyrians had caused terror, but they were not in control. God was. This is the truth for all generations. Today's world is replete with wars, economic instability, and personal struggles. Many put their trust in their political connections, wealth, governments, or their strength, but these fail. Jesus alone offers an unshaken platform and pillar in all situations.

Where do you run when the unexpected happens? Some turn to alcohol, drugs, secret cults, or human relationships for comfort. However, true security is found only in Jesus Christ. A stronghold is not a temporary shelter or fleeting source of comfort. It is a fortress built to withstand any attack. Jesus is not just a hiding place. He is the ultimate Source of security. Whatever storm you are facing, Jesus is your stronghold. The waves may rise but His foundation never shakes. Trust Him, and you will never be swept away.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: There is no safer hiding place from the storms of life than in Jesus.

CAGED IN COMFORT

KEY VERSE: "Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction." - (MICAH 2:10).

TEXT: MICAH 2:7-13

In 2019, a massive earthquake struck Indonesia, displacing thousands of people. Entire communities were forced to abandon their homes, not because they wanted to, but because the ground beneath them had become unstable. For many, staying behind in the collapse of buildings but also in the reluctance of some to leave despite clear warnings.

Micah's message to Israel carried a similar urgency. In Micah 2:10, the prophet declares, "Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction." The people of Israel had settled into spiritual complacency, believing that their land and prosperity were secure. Yet, their corruption had made their very dwelling place dangerous. God's warning was clear: comfort without righteousness leads to ruin.

The Israelites had defiled the land with injustice and idolatry. Many cling to lifestyles, habits, or environments that have become spiritually toxic. Some remain in relationships, careers, or ideologies that are dangerous as physical exploited the poor, perverted justice, and silenced the voices of truth. Their sense of security was false. Yet, they refused to heed Micah's call that judgment was coming. Their refusal to leave behind what is no longer safe for their souls. When we refuse, destruction follows. Today, ignoring Israel's promptings can lead to a life devoid of His presence and peace.

This is a message for our generation. Many cling to lifestyles, habits, or environments that have become spiritually toxic. Some remain in relationships, careers, or ideologies that are dangerous as physical relocation but corrupt their faith. The call to "arise and depart" is not always about physical relocation but about spiritual repositioning. God often calls His people to leave behind what is no longer safe for their souls.

Are there habits, relationships, associations, or mind-sets that you need to leave behind? Spiritual stagnation is as dangerous as physical complacency. When a place, practice, or pursuit no longer aligns with God's will, staying becomes destructive. God's call to move keeps us in earthly security but is always for our preservation. Do not let comfort keep you in a place that has become unfit for your soul.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: No amount of wealth can buy enduring rest for it only abides in Christ
