FIT OR UN-FIT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD?
Texts: 1 Kings 19:16,19-21; Luke 9:51-62
MEMORY SCRIPTURE:
"And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, in fit for the Kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).
INTRODUCTION
Everyone one way or another knows that life is a journey to ETERNITY in which the world is like a transit point with different departure times for everyone. There are only 2 final destinations - HEAVEN or HELL and we must one day depart to either of them. To enter heaven, we must be fit for it.
Becoming TRUE DISCIPLES or followers of Jesus is what makes us fit to be in the place He is now.
Discipleship means dying to self, following hard and learning of Christ so as to be like Him in thought, word and dead (Matt. 16:24; 11:29). Discipleship to Christ, since the beginning has usually been borne out of a RESOLUTE DECISION, costs notwithstanding (Luke 5:27-28; Acts 9:1-6). For the true disciple, there is no going back, the decision to follow has been taken and cannot be revoked.
To enter into the kingdom of God, either in the sense of spiritually being born into it (Matt. 11:12; Luke 16:16; Col. 1:12-13); or experiencing the powers of the kingdom in this life (Heb. 6:4-6); or entering into the kingdom when one puts off this terbanacle (2 Cor. 5:1-6) is an experience that cannot be achieved by any on-looker (Lk.13:24).
1. THE UN-FIT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD
a. Those, like Elisha and those men who would not respond promptly, but consider other things to be as important as the call. They must first marry, have children, have house and property and then “settle down to serve God”. (1 Kgs. 19:19-20; Luke 9:59-61).
b. Those who consider some personal needs to be so pressing that they do not have time for religion – weekly church activities, spiritual exercises etc. They are EXCUSE MAKERS. (Luke 14:16-21; Ex. 4:10; Gen. 3:12-13; Ex. 32:22-24; Judges 6:12-17; Acts 24:25). Among these are the fair-weather “believers”.
Please note that there is place for excuse making.
NB: We must deeply consider where we want to spend eternity. If heaven is your choice, the question is are you fit or un-fit?
