"I can never weep over the loss of this world and try to escape death when it comes to me. Rather, I will welcome death if it comes to me in the way of Allah. I shall submit to death cheerfully, joyfully and happily, for Paradise is a much happier abode than this world. This world is not a place worth living. Fortunate is he who dies for Islam.” – Hadhrat `Abbas ibne `Ali (a.s)

Imam Husain (A.S) once cried for help in the imposed battle at Karbala. He said: "Is there any person who would help me?"

هل من ناصر ينصرني

Note: If a few opponents had left Yazid's army to help Imam Husain(A.S.)it would have made no difference. Hurr the commander of Yazid's army did not choose to barter eternal heavenly life in paradise with this temporal worldly life, so he sacrificed his life for Imam Husain (A.S) by fighting against the army of Yazid.

Imam Husain (A.S) cried for help to give chance to his opponents to enter paradise but they were too materialistic to think like the wise, just & unbiased Hurr. God is proud of Husain(A.S), who sacrificed his life & everything to perpetuate the True Islam of God as revealed to His last & best messenger. The call of Imam Husain(A.S.) for help is for all times up to Doomsday. Whoever obeys God and joins Imam Husain(A.S.) by regarding him as a model and disobeys Satan is Imam’s helper.
Allamah Iqbal considers Imam Husain (A.S) as the real meaning of Zebhe Azim because eventually a lamb was sent by God and sacrificed by the messenger Abraham (A.S) whereas Husain(A.S.) was a Great Sacrifice Indeed.

“And when My servants ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then surely I am very near, I answer the call of the supplicant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me, that they may achieve perfection.”

(Sura Baqara, Verse 186)

The above verse gives hope to all those who are in distress. Even when we feel guilty about the numerous sins we have committed, we should turn to Him for forgiveness and have faith that He will accept us back because He loves us. Despairing of the Mercy of God is a quality of the disbelievers and doubters.

“Verily none are desperate of Allah (S.W.T.)’s Mercy but the disbelieving people.”

(Sura Yusuf, Verse 87)

If Muslims would be satisfied with judgments based on weak arguments then they would find themselves confusing religious teachings with superstition and innovation – a problem that faces many other faiths. Islam requires that every argument and action be founded on solid reasoning and sound judgment. The Qur’an acknowledges men of knowledge as those who respect the Laws of God.

“Only the realistic and visionary men are obedient to Allah.”

(Sura Fatir, Verse 28)

At one time the Holy Imam Ali (a.s.) warned his enemies:

“ If all of the Arab world rise and fight against me, I will not be defeated nor will I surrender or compromise. I shall fight for the sake of Allah (S.W.T.) even if thousands of swords embrace me. I will not leave the perfect path of Islam!”

He further went on to say, “I would rather be swept away by the swords and arrows then die sick in bed.”

One instance of his bravery can be seen in the battlefield of Ohad. When the enemy attacked the Muslims from behind, all the warriors ran from battleground out of fear. At that time, our first Imam (a.s.) stood alone, firmly fighting to safeguard Islam.

Away from the fighting field, Imam Ali (a.s.) was exemplary in his worship and love for Allah (S.W.T.). He spent long hours of the nights in prostration and worship. He first started praying publicly, following the Prophet (s.a.w.w.), at the age of only ten years.

His(a.s) death was also in the state of worship i.e. while in sajdah (prostration). It was in this state that he(a.s) embraced the glory of shahadat (martyrdom).

When Imam `Ali (a.s) was fatally wounded by the poisoned sword of `Abdu 'r-Rahman ibn Muljam (the curse of Allah be on him), he (`Ali (a.s)) made the following will to Imam
Hasan and Imam Husayn (peace be on them):

"I advise you (both) to fear Allah and that you should not hanker after the (pleasure of this) world even though it may run after you. Do not be sorry for anything of this world that you have been denied. Speak the truth and act (in expectation) for reward. Be an enemy of the oppressor and helper of the oppressed.

"I advise you (both) and all my children and members of my family and everyone whom my writing reaches, to fear Allah, to keep your affairs in order, and to maintain
good relations among yourselves for I have heard your grandfather (the Holy Prophet) saying: `Improvement of mutual differences is better than general prayers and
fastings.'

"(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of orphans. So do not allow them to starve and they should not be ruined in your presence.

"(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of your neighbours, because they were the subject of the Prophet's advice. He went on advising in their
favour till we thought he would allow them a share in inheritance.

"(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of the Qur'an. No one should excel you in acting upon it.

"(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of prayer, because it is the pillar of your religion.

"(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of your Lord's House (Ka'bah). Do not forsake it so long as you live, because if it is abandoned you will not be
spared.

"(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of jihad with the help of your property, lives and tongues in the way of Allah.

"You should keep to a respect for kinship and spending for others. Avoid turning away from one another and severing mutual relations. Do not give up bidding
for good and forbidding from evil lest the mischievous gain positions over you, and then if you will pray, the prayers will not be granted."

The Messenger of Allah said:

"Ali is with Quran, and Quran is with Ali. They shall not separate from each other till they both return to me by the Pool (of Paradise)."

Sunni references:
al-Mustadrak, by al-Hakim, v3, p124 on the authority of Umm Salama
al-Sawa'iq al-Muhriqah, by Ibn Hajar, Ch. 9, section 2, pp 191,194
al-Awsat, by al-Tabarani; also in al-Saghir
Tarikh al-Khulafaa, by Jalaluddin al-Suyuti, p173

The above tradition gives evidence to the fact that Imam Ali a.s and Quran are non-separable. If we accept the "Quran and Sunnah" version to be authentic, then one can conclude that the one who carries the Sunnah of Prophet s.a.w.w is Imam Ali a.s since he is the one who has been put beside Quran.

Imām `Alī ibn Husayn (a.s.) said:

"The human tongue does a favor on other parts of the body every day. It inquires about their condition. The parts of body say: If you spare us, we will remain in good condition. They beg for Allāh’s mercy and say that if they are rewarded, it is because of the tongue and if they are punished, it is also because of the tongue.”
