If you’re reading this, you’re currently on a digital device. And it’s likely that the device you’re using is a smartphone.

We are all grateful, no doubt, for the way that the digital world connects us. But sometimes it also seemingly disconnects us from what is right in front of us.

When it comes to Sabbath in particular, we’re called to connect authentically with whoever is in front of us. And if you’re a human living in the twenty-first century, it’s likely that having a phone around seems to be more of a distraction than help.

So here’s something fun to try: leaving your digital devices in another room, on silent, or switched off entirely during Sabbath hours. Think of it as a digital Sabbath, or digital detox! It’s not a mandate, but it is an opportunity to evaluate our relational priorities with God and others on one of seven days of the week - the Sabbath itself.
