The National Movement of Catholic Students (NMCS) had the privilege of participating in the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust (YETT) workshop on Legal Frameworks Governing Higher and Tertiary Education in Zimbabwe, convened under the Student Academic Freedom Regional Advocacy Programme (SAFRAP), from the 23rd to the 24th of April.
The workshop brought together various student representatives and stakeholders to engage on key issues affecting higher and tertiary education institutions in Zimbabwe. NMCS was proudly represented as part of this important platform for dialogue, learning, and advocacy.
The programme commenced with a panel discussion featuring representatives from the Ministry, ZILSA, and COST. The discussion focused on critical issues within tertiary institutions, including the inclusion and welfare of persons with disabilities, sexual harassment policies, study-work programmes, equity, and institutional governance. Participants explored the existing legal frameworks governing higher and tertiary education in Zimbabwe. Through these sessions, students gained valuable knowledge about their right to education and the legal protections available to them within academic institutions.
Overall, the workshop was insightful, empowering, and impactful, strengthening the capacity of student leaders to advocate for academic freedom, equity, and the protection of students’ rights within higher and tertiary education spaces.
