Shalom, Harare! 👋
We have just kicked off a new teaching series: "Knowing Jesus: A Deep Dive into the Gospel of John."
As the General Council of the Assemblies of God, we stand firmly on our 16 Fundamental Truths—the first being that the Holy Bible is the inerrant, complete, and final word of God for our lives (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We trust the Bible above all else.
📖 Why is the Gospel of John Unique?
While Matthew, Mark, and Luke (the Synoptic Gospels) show us Jesus as the King, the Servant, and the Son of Man, John reveals Jesus as GOD.
John wasn't just a writer; he was an eyewitness. He didn't focus on Jesus' genealogy as a man, but on His divinity as the Word who was with God from the beginning (John 1:1-2).
🔥 Who Wrote the Gospel of John?
It was written by the Apostle John who was a disciple of Jesus. His brother was James. In his books, including 1, 2, 3 John and revelation, he appears a gentle and loving man. Did you know Apostle John wasn't always the gentle man we read about?
• He was fiery: He once wanted to call down fire on people! (Luke 9:54).
• He was ambitious: He scrambled for the "best seat" in the house (Mark 10:37).
• He was exclusive: He tried to stop others from doing ministry (Mark 9:38).
But walking with Jesus changed everything. The man who wanted to burn Samaritans later travelled to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17). 🕊️
He who wanted the highest position was content in calling other church leaders, probably your than him, his partners and companions (Rev. 1 v 9).
If Jesus could transform John, He can genuinely change you in ways you never imagined!
🛡️ When was this Gospel written?
Although we do not have an exact date, it was probably written around AD 80-85, John’s Gospel is a direct eyewitness record. Unlike texts written hundreds or even 1,700 years later (like the Koran, the Book of Mormon, or fabricated "lost gospels"), John was there. He saw, he touched, and he believed. His account can be trusted.
🎯 What is the purpose of the Gospel of John?
Why was this book written? "That you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31).
The Jewish temple had been destroyed and they could not continue with the festivals such as Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. The Jewish life had been overturned and they were hopeless.
John shows them that Jesus is the real temple of God that cannot be destroyed. He is the fulfilment of all the festivals.
Even to us in a world that it volatile where things we trust can be taken away, Jesus is the only firm foundation. He is the true Temple. He is God who became man so that you could have Eternal Life.
