*THE LAST LINE*

In surah al-Nisa', Allah says:

[إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ افْتَرَىٰ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا]

Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wishes. And whoever associates partners with Allah has fabricated a terrible sin. [48]

About 70 ayaat later in the same surah, He repeats this statement in almost exactly the same words when He says:

[إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا ‎]

Allah does not forgives associating partners with Him but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wishes. And whoever associates partners with Allah has gone far astray. [116]

And in between those two ayaat in the same surah, Allah says:

[وَمَن يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَاؤُهُ جَهَنَّمُ خَالِدًا]

But whoever kills a believer intentionally, then his punishment will be the hellfire, remaining eternally in it. [93]

In his famous tafsir, ibn Kathir made an interesting observation about this arrangement when he wrote:

[ وقال تعالى : ( إن الله لا يغفر أن يشرك به ويغفر ما دون ذلك لمن يشاء ) [ النساء : 48 ] . فهذه الآية عامة في جميع الذنوب ما عدا الشرك ، وهي مذكورة في هذه السورة الكريمة بعد هذه الآية وقبلها ، لتقوية الرجاء ، والله أعلم . ]

The ayah "Allah does not forgives associating partners with Him but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wishes" applies to all sins aside from shirk.

And this statement is mentioned in this surah both before Allah says "But whoever kills a believer intentionally, then his punishment will be the hellfire, remaining eternally in it" and afterwards as well, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲'𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 [𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗵'𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝘆]. And Allah knows best.

✒ *Allāh Will Forgive You As Long As Your Soul Has Not Reached Your Throat*

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

“Indeed, Allāh accepts the repentance of slave as long as he is not gargling (i.e gasping for his last breath).”

al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Mubārakpūree Raḥimahullāh said:

“It means forgiveness is granted as long as the soul has not reached the throat.”

“I wish I could meet my brothers.”

The Sahabah *رضي الله عنهم* said, “Are we not your brothers?”

The Messenger of Allah *ﷺ* said, “You are my companions, but my brothers are those who have faith in me although they never saw me.”

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله listed a few consequences of sinning/disobeying Allāh:

• Lack of success

• Corrupt views

• Blindness from truth

• Corruption of the heart

• Failing to remember Allāh

• Wasting of time

• Avoidance and hate by the creation

• Separation between the servant and his Lord

• Supplication not being answered

• Hardness of the heart

• Decaying of blessing in provision and age

• Prevention from attaining knowledge

• Humiliation

• Insults from the enemies

• Constriction of the chest

• Affliction with evil friendship, those who corrupt the heart and make one waste the time

• Prolonging of sadness and grief
• Miserable life

• & Disappointment

All this results from sinning and and neglecting to remember Allāh, just as crops are grown by being watered and are consumed by fire.

From 'Abdullāh b. 'Amr Raḍi-Allāhu 'Anhu who narrated:

The Prophet Ṣallallāhu-'Alaihi Wa Sallam was asked: O Messenger of Allāh who are the best of people?, he answered: “Everyone who has a Makhmoom heart and a truthful tongue”,

They asked: We know what a truthful tongue is but what is a Makhmoom heart?,

He Ṣallallāhu-'Alaihi Wa Sallam said: “It is a pious, pure (heart) which has no sin in it, neither it's oppressive nor it contains grudge and jealousy.”

Temporary Pleasures vs True Happiness

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim said:

‎“O people who take pleasure in a life that will vanish, falling in love with a faded shadow is sheer stupidity!”

Purification of the Soul [Pg. 147].

Reflection:

❖ In Islām, the concepts of pleasure and happiness are distinctly different, yet interconnected.

❖ Pleasure often refers to temporary sensory experiences that may bring immediate gratification, such as indulgence in food, entertainment, or material possessions.

❖ Happiness in Islām is deeper and more profound, rooted in spiritual fulfillment and the contentment that comes from a relationship with Allāh.

❖ True happiness is achieved through worship and obedience to Allāh, as it aligns with the soul’s purpose and leads to inner peace.

Action plan

❖ Prioritise pleasing Allāh over personal pleasure.

❖ Read the following supplication:

اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ حُبَّكَ أَحَبَّ الْأَشْيَاءِ إِلَيَّ

“O Allāh, make your love the most beloved of things to me."

Sh. Ibn Bāz Raḥimahullāh: With a hardship there are 3 affairs;

• Being patient with it - It's obligatory
• Being pleased with it - It's Sunnah
• Being grateful for it - It's most virtuous/best
