Revisiting the Jewish Family as a strategic institution for generation of religious awareness & spiritual advancement

Text: Deuteronomy 4:10 & Deuteronomy 6:7

* Deut 4:10 The day that you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, The Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me and I will make them hear My words, so that they learn to fear Me all the days that they live on the earth, and so that they teach their children.’

* Deut. 6:7 These words, which I am commanding you today, are to be on your heart. You are to teach them diligently to your children, and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up.

* In the previous exhortation, I laid emphasis on the necessity for each of the tribes of Israel to organise themselves into armies since it was through warfare that they could guarantee the enforcement of divine promises made in their favour.

* Today, as we revisit the Jewish family set up we cannot but help notice how the family served as a strategic place for the ongoing generation religious awareness & spiritual advancement.

* In Deuteronomy 4:10 an important pattern unfolds which can serve as a useful template for all parents & guardians.

* First, the people needed to gather together to hear God’s Word.

* Second, exposure to God’s Word induced the need for lifelong learning of fearing God – they would fear God all the days of their lives.

* Third, with family heads armed with the Word of God in their heads and the fear of God in their hearts, they were now empowered and ready to teach their children the ways of God.

* A troubling state of affairs obtains in many contemporary family setups wherein the duty of creating and sustaining religious awareness and spiritual empowerment of children and other family members is passed on to the Pastor and his/her leadership team.

* Some parents and guardians feel that by facilitating access to the church leadership for their children, they are satisfactorily playing their part since church leaders are considered as ‘experts’ more devoted to this solemn cause.

* While it may be true that most church leaders have superior knowledge in comparison with the average parent, I hastily point out that the parent or guardian has more exposure to the family members than any church leader so we need to exploit fully this strategic advantage.

* The portrait of the family leader painted in Deuteronomy 4:10 is that of an actively and intimately involved individual who serves as a rich reservoir of religious knowledge and deep spiritual experience that family members should constantly tap into.

* In Deuteronomy 6:7 the family leader is to:
(a) have the word of the Lord on his heart,
(b) diligently teach his/her children that Word
(c) where and how often? –
one When seated in the house,
two When walking on the way,
three when lying down and
four when rising up.

* Religious consciousness within the family was supposed to be pervasive in profound ways.

* I believe some of us family leaders have drifted from this great model and have relegated much religious work to third parties such as Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, church lay leaders, school authorities, society leaders etc.

* This is a grave error for which we continue to pay a steep price as is evident in the staggering proportions of worldliness and lack of appetite for divine things among our loved ones.

* We need to get back to the basics, regularly praying for and with the family, preaching and teaching the Word, ministering salvation and healing to those loved ones in need and making intercession for all loved ones within our circles.

I thank you.

Roll call of battle-ready family members

Text: Numbers 1:2-3

Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls;

From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

* It makes sense that if God Almighty has promised something, we should acquire it effortlessly because He who promised is both Faithful and Powerful.

* The Children of Israel had an unshakeable promise: to inherit a land flowing with milk and honey.

* Instead of expecting an effortless and resistance-free takeover of the land, they were to brace for war.

* The instruction is that they apprise themselves of all males aged 20 years old and above, the battle-readiness age ensuring each tribe of Israel has an organized army.

* The message was clear, divine promises would be embraced, enjoyed, and sustained only using warfare: the enemy would not capitulate without fierce resistance.

* The message today is equally clear: covenant promises of healing, long life, peace, prosperity, etc. will not be handed over on a silver platter; they must be obtained and sustained by ongoing warfare engaged by God’s children.

* My brothers and sisters apprise yourselves within your families so you may know which individuals are battle-ready, encourage and support them to live out their roles as warriors so that covenant promises can be embraced.

* 2 Timothy 2:4 says, No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

* Our battle-ready loved ones who know the Lord need to be constantly encouraged to refocus on the things that matter in winning the battle for some find themselves entangled in other less important commitments such as inordinate exposure to TV and other time-consuming sources/types of entertainment.

* Sicknesses, untimely deaths, suffering, etc. will continue to bedevil our loved ones because that is what the devil exists for to kill, to steal, and to destroy but the Son of God has come to give life in its abundance.

* Let us intensify our battles at family levels, let us have weekly prayer and fasting battles organized and done at family levels so we may lay claim to promises of healing, long life, peace, etc. that are rightfully ours.

A CALL TO SOBER REFLECTIONS ON GODLY LIVING (20.09.2024)

TEXT: MALACHI 3:6a

FOR I THE LORD CHANGE NOT; THEREFORE YE, O SONS OF JACOB, ARE NOT CONSUMED.

As humans, we are naturally predisposed to change. Decisions on how we live our lives are often informed by societal norms and values, which stem from constantly changing knowledge bases that are not immune to error.

The immutable God does not notice changes in fashion trends, the drivers of changes in modernity, etc. His divine requirements of humanity remain unchanged despite humanity’s desire to move with the trends of modern life.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 says, don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Don’t be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, those who practice homosexuality, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, slanderers, swindlers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.

This is disturbing in that, if God does not change it means our relatives who practice these vices are in grave danger of eternal condemnation: that is, spending endless time of torment in hell.

Even scarier is the casual, carefree approach with our brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties, cousins, nieces, children, etc. Conduct themselves while living lifestyles of defiance to Godly imperatives.

Unlike our government systems where provisions for constitutional reforms, amendments, etc laws that criminalized some conducts in times past can be repelled thereby decriminalizing the same.

Unfortunately, the immutability of God has no room for any constitutional reforms or amendments, sins have to be stopped and repented of, and individuals, great or small need to seek forgiveness in humility and in fear of God.

Unlike our justice systems where courts of appeals exist which can effectively overturn the rulings of lower courts, with divine justice, no such courts of appeal exist - that is scary!- what the immutable God has determined can't be challenged.

Our loved ones act as though they were promised a special dispensation by God which exempts them from what is expected of all humanity by an immutable and holy God. Regrettably, that is defective thinking inspired by diabolical deception- there is no diplomatic immunity for anyone in matters of Godly living.

As a family, we need to take these issues with the seriousness they deserve: we have to support each other, guide, correcting each other in the fear of the lord for grave are the consequences of defiance on our part and that of the perpetrators of these vices that are an abomination to God.

Not taking any serious action as is common among us makes us either sellouts or sick people. I argue that seeing our loved ones walking into danger and doing nothing equates us to pathetic sellouts of staggering wicked proportions: it's like doing nothing when we have seen that our loved one is heading into a room wherein poisonous snakes have just entered.
