1 Corinthians 14:14-15 *"For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."* There are two kinds of prayer in today's reading, *"praying with the spirit"* and *"praying with the understanding"*. However, Apostle Paul's call to us is that we pray more with the spirit. That's why he said, "I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also", letting us know that praying with the spirit takes preeminence over praying with the understanding. The proper order and priority in our prayer as revealed in Scripture is to *"pray with the spirit and then pray with understanding also"*. Praying with the understanding is the *"ALSO"* part of the equation. So you ought to pray more with the spirit, by speaking in other tongues. Amen

Psalms 137:1-3 *"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion."* In 587 BC, as the prophet Jeremiah had warned, the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem, destroyed much of the city including the temple on Mount Zion, and took many of the people in exile in Babylon. The exile was a time of grief and distress, when the people were moved to pray earnestly for God's judgement on their enemies. Rather than playing their harps, they hung them on the branches of the trees. We need to remember that while songs can be a source of deep grief, they can also bring comfort. Amen

1 Corinthians 12:12 *"For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ."* Apostle Paul uses the analogy of the human body with its many parts to demonstrate that the body of Christ (Church) has many different parts with many different gifts, but is still one body (v 12). The different parts of the body do not envy each other and the same should apply to the believers (vs 14-20). Similarly, there should be no looking down on one another, just as the different parts of the body do not look down on one another (vs 21-26). Just as God designed the working of the human body, so He has planned the way that different individuals can contribute to His Church. The different parts of a body all need each other, just as individual Christians need one another. An African proverb says, *"The left hand washes the right and the right hand washes the left"*. Even those parts that seem weak are *"indispensable and are treated with special honour"*. God's design requires that the different parts of both the physical body and the Church be concerned for one another (v 25), for as the African proverb puts it, *"One hand cannot lift a (heavy) load"*. Even pain is not meant to be endured in isolation, for God designed the human body and the Church to share in the pain and pleasure of all their components (v 26). Amen

Psalms 134:3 *"The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion."* As we turn to God to thank Him and praise Him, we can also ask for His blessing. In the Old Testament times the priests spoke of God's blessing on the people (Num 6:24-26). Now that Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest, we know the fullness of God's blessing on us through Him. As we turn to Him we *"receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need"*(Heb 4:14-16). We should always remember too that the God who blesses us is no other than the *"Maker of heaven and earth"*(v 1). Amen

1 Corinthians 11:3 *"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."* The *"head"* is a symbol of authority and supremacy, so this problem really concerns issues of partnership and subordination. Apostle Paul argues that we are all in a line of subordination: a woman is subordinate to a man, men are subordinate to Christ and Christ is subordinate to God (v 3). But Christ is not subordinate to the Father because He is inferior to the Father or fundamentally different from Him. Christ is equal with the Father, but He has chosen to submit as a Son in order to accomplish God's purpose here on earth. Amen

Psalms 128:5-6 *"The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel."* Jewish people in the Old Testament days were taught not to be only concerned with their individual lives and their families walking in the ways of God. They were also to be concerned for the *"prosperity of Jerusalem "*(v 5), for the worship of the temple there and the life of their capital city. They were to be concerned that *"peace be upon Israel"*(v 6), and for the life of the generations to come, their children's children. We should think in this way too and realize how the welfare of individuals, of families and of the state belong together. The strength of any country depends on the strength of its family life and the godly living and concern of its people. Thus we should pray for God's blessing on the family life, our communities and nations. Amen

Psalms 125:1-2 *"They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever."* Some of us live near mountains, and perhaps we think of them as solid and unchanging. If we live by the sea we may think of the ocean as powerful and unchanging. The people of Jerusalem and those who went there on pilgrimage thought like that of the city and especially the hill of the temple, Mount Zion. Because they saw it as strong and unchanging, and because the temple was the place where they felt the presence of God as they went to worship there, they could say, *"those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures for ever"* (v 1). Jerusalem was surrounded by even higher hills and so they said, *"As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people "*(v 2). Trust in God gives a security that nothing else can, whatever storms and difficulties life brings. Have faith in God. Amen

1 Corinthians 7:23-24 *"Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God."* One's relationship and standing with God matter far more than one's position. Apostle Paul repeats the point he made in chapter 6:20: *"You were bought at a price"*, and adds, *"do not become slaves of men"* (v 23). He is not referring to physical slavery, but to giving in to social and religious pressures. Christ has bought us and He is our Master. We are responsible only to Him. Amen

Psalms 119:105 *"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."* The Gospel according to Saint John 1:9 says the Word of God is the true Light🕯️. It's the Sword 🗡️ of the Spirit with which you pierce your way through the darkness of life. If the true Light 🕯️ dwells richly in you, fear, defeat, failure and all other result of darkness won't have any place in you. You won't fear because the true Light 🕯️ will show you that God has not given you the spirit of fear. You won't be defeated because you'll see that greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. You wont be sick because you'll discover that by His stripes, you were healed. The Word of God will reveal to you what God sees you to be. It's your responsibility to invest the Word of God in yourself by studying it regularly (My mentor calls it "3 Ds meaning *Daily Discipline Devotion*"). Amen

Psalms 119:72 *"The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver."* David was a very rich king 👑, yet he made it clear what he thought was the most important treasure in his life - the Word of God. To him, God's Word was worth more than thousands of gold and silver. This should be your attitude as a child of God. God's Word should be the thing you treasure and prize the most in life. When you have God's Word, you have everything, for every good thing in life was made by God through the Word. Thus, no one can truly be successful, prosperous and have a good life without the Word! Everything you need in life is wrapped up in the Word. Apostle Paul says, *"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly..."*(Colo 3:16). If you must be rich in anything, let it be the Word of God! Go for the Word! Seek it as a man seeks a treasure, for it is the greatest treasure in the whole world. Amen
