Dressed in jerseys reflecting different sporting teams, the youths used the occasion to emphasize that despite differences in preference and background, they remain united under one Creator.

The initiative also coincided with Motherโ€™s Day commemorations, with the youths paying tribute to mothers, particularly female advisers, for their unconditional love, guidance and continued support for the group.

The celebration also underscored the contribution of female advisers as steady anchors in nurturing youth participation and sustaining parish life.

Beyond the occasion, the initiative reflects a growing effort by young people to build shared spaces within the parish where faith, appreciation and togetherness are expressed across generations.

By the end of the celebration, the jerseys and colors had become less about teams or differences and more about a shared life in Christ within the parish.

As their names were called, inductees stepped forward to receive blue sashes marking entry into the first stage, while others, already in formation, moved into the final stage, marked by cream sashes.

The latest induction brings the guildโ€™s total membership to 35.

During the ceremony, the guild donated a beast and other goods towards preparations for the parishโ€™s annual St. Johnโ€™s Day feast, scheduled for September this year.

Thuthukani Moyo, parish chairperson of the guild, said the donation was meant to ease the cost burden on individual parishioners and ensure the celebration caters for all.

โ€œWe want the feast to cater for everyone, including the underprivileged, and we hope other associations will also chip in with their contributions,โ€ he said.

The induction marks the beginning, and for others a continuation, of a structured journey within the guild, centered on service, discipline and spiritual growth.

Those inducted are expected to take on a more active role in parish life while growing into the responsibilities of the guild.

Leading the retreat, Rev. Fr. Crelly Ncube opened the session with a question to attendees: โ€œWhat is Lent?โ€He then guided participants through reflections on the spiritual purpose of the season.

As the retreat drew to a close, the congregation was asked to examine how they are using what Fr. Ncube described as their โ€œborrowed time and talents.โ€ Participants reflected on the biblical parable of the servants entrusted with gifts, considering whether they are investing their gifts wisely or burying them.

Some attendees shared personal reflections following the session.

โ€œIโ€™ve been given so much, yet Iโ€™ve been hoarding it all,โ€ one participant said. Another quietly reflected: โ€œI need to dig deeper and let go of fear.โ€

Fr. Ncube emphasized that Lent is a time of spiritual renewal and preparation.

โ€œLent is a season of spiritual growth, roots growing deeper in Jesus Christ. It is preparation for the Paschal mystery โ€” His suffering, death, and resurrectionโ€ฆand our own death too,โ€ he said.

Before the session ended, participants were tasked with writing personal reflections on the state of their souls after listening to testimonies and sharings from earlier in the week.

Retreat Reflection Explores Meaning of Suffering

Suffering touches every human life. In a moving retreat reflection, Fr. Crelly Ncube invited retreatants to see pain through the lens of faith, where mystery, surrender, and hope meet at the heart of the Christian journey.

BY Alicia N. Sibanda

St. John the Baptist Parish - Nkulumane (March 11, 2026) - As the parish retreat entered its third day at St. John the Baptist Parish, Rev. Fr. Crelly Ncube invited participants into a deep and challenging reflection on a subject that touches every human life: suffering.

In his meditation, Fr. Ncube addressed questions that many believers quietly carry within their hearts. Why does pain enter our lives? Why do the faithful endure trials? Why does evil seem to exist?

These questions, he explained, form part of what can be described as spiritual suffering โ€” a reality that has troubled humanity across generations.

Fr. Ncube offered three perspectives to help participants approach the mystery of suffering.

First, he described suffering as a mystery known fully only to God. In this sense, believers are invited to see life through spiritual eyes and learn the difficult but necessary act of surrender.

Second, he spoke of suffering as a gift from God, pointing to the trials endured by saints such as St. John the Baptist. These hardships, he explained, are not meaningless, but can lead believers towards eternal joy.

Third, suffering can sometimes become a form of relief, particularly in situations where a long illness or prolonged struggle finally comes to rest in peace.

The reflection was grounded in scripture. Participants turned to James 5:14โ€“20, which speaks about prayer, healing, and spiritual restoration, while the Passion narratives of Jesus Christ echoed throughout the discussion, reminding the faithful that suffering is central to the Christian story itself.

As the session concluded, several insights remained with those present. Lifeโ€™s hardest lessons often emerge in our lowest moments. In those quiet spaces, suffering can become what one participant described as โ€œGodโ€™s megaphone,โ€ speaking to the human heart when everything else falls silent.

Despite its weight, suffering does not remove the possibility of hope. Fr. Ncube reminded the congregation that believers are called to choose joy even amid hardship.

For some participants, the message resonated in a deeply personal way. One attendee shared that the reflection felt as though it had been written directly for her, affirming her belief that God still speaks through those who become vessels of His word.
