SUNDAY SERVICE
SERMON TITLE:BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Key Scripture

Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)
“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit.”

1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a one-time event—it is a continuous, daily yielding to His control, influence, and leadership.

The word “filled” (Greek: plēroō) means:

• To be controlled by
• To be saturated
• To be fully influenced

It is not about having the Spirit (every believer has Him), but allowing Him to have you fully.

Supporting Scriptures:

• Acts 2:4 – “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…”
• Acts 4:31 – They were filled again (continuous experience)
• Galatians 5:25 – “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

2. WHY MUST WE BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

A. FOR POWER TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

You cannot live a spiritual life with natural strength.

Acts 1:8
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…”

• Power to overcome sin
• Power to stand in trials
• Power to live righteously

Romans 8:13
“…by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body…”

B. FOR INTIMACY AND FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD

The Holy Spirit connects us deeply to God.

1 Corinthians 2:10-12
“…the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”

• He reveals God’s heart
• He makes God real to you
• He deepens your prayer life

Romans 8:15-16
“…by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness…”

C. FOR GUIDANCE AND DIRECTION

Without the Spirit, life becomes guesswork.

Romans 8:14
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

John 16:13
“…He will guide you into all truth…”

• Decisions become clearer
• Discernment increases
• You avoid unnecessary battles

D. FOR BOLDNESS IN MINISTRY AND WITNESSING

Acts 4:31
“…they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”

• Fear disappears
• Confidence in God increases
• You speak with authority

E. FOR SPIRITUAL FRUIT AND CHARACTER

Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…”

You don’t produce fruit by effort, but by being filled.

3. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE NOT FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?

This is critical.

A. YOU BECOME CONTROLLED BY THE FLESH

If the Spirit is not in control, something else will be.

Galatians 5:16-17
“…walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Without Him:

• Sin becomes attractive
• Discipline becomes difficult
• Carnality dominates

B. YOU BECOME SPIRITUALLY WEAK

Matthew 26:41
“The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

• Easily discouraged
• Easily offended
• Easily defeated

C. YOU LOSE SENSITIVITY TO GOD

1 Thessalonians 5:19
“Do not quench the Spirit.”

When not filled:

• You stop hearing God clearly
• Conviction becomes weaker
• Spiritual dullness sets in

D. YOU LIVE A DRY AND EMPTY CHRISTIAN LIFE

John 7:37-38
“…out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Without the Spirit:

• No flow
• No freshness
• No spiritual life

Christianity becomes religion instead of relationship.

E. YOU BECOME VULNERABLE TO THE ENEMY

Ephesians 6:10-12
“Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”

Strength comes through the Spirit.

Without Him:

• You lack discernment
• You fall into traps easily
• You struggle to resist the enemy

4. HOW TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

A. DESIRE AND HUNGER

Matthew 5:6
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst…”

B. ASK GOD

Luke 11:13
“…how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

C. SURRENDER COMPLETELY

Romans 12:1
“Present your bodies a living sacrifice…”

The Spirit fills what is yielded.

D. LIVE IN THE WORD

Colossians 3:16 (parallel to Ephesians 5:18)
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”

The Word and the Spirit work together.

E. CONTINUOUS WALK

Being filled is daily.

• Pray in the Spirit (Jude 1:20)
• Worship (Ephesians 5:19)
• Stay sensitive

5. SIGNS OF A SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE

• Joy in all situations (Acts 13:52)
• Boldness (Acts 4:31)
• Spiritual understanding (1 Corinthians 2:12)
• Victory over sin (Romans 8:2)
• Strong prayer life (Romans 8:26)

CONCLUSION

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not optional—it is essential.

Without Him:

• You struggle
• You dry up
• You live below your calling

With Him:

• You walk in power
• You live in victory
• You experience God deeply

FINAL CHARGE

Ephesians 5:18
“Be filled with the Spirit.”

This is not a suggestion—it is a command.

ALTAR CALL / PRAYER

“Father, in the name of Jesus, I surrender my life completely to You.
Fill me afresh with the Holy Spirit.
Take control of my thoughts, my desires, and my actions.
Let my life overflow with Your power, Your presence, and Your purpose.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

SUNDAY SERVICE

SERMON:Christianity Is a Relationship, Not a Religion

Key Scriptures:

• John 15:7–8
• Matthew 22:37–38
• Luke 9:23–24
• Romans 10:9

Introduction

Many people describe Christianity as a religion, but that is not the full truth. Christianity is not about rituals, rules, or routines—it is about a living, active relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Religion focuses on outward performance.
Relationship focuses on inward transformation.

1. What Is a Relationship with God?

A relationship with God is a personal, ongoing connection with Him where you:

• Know Him
• Love Him
• Hear Him
• Walk with Him daily

It is not distant—it is intimate.

John 15:7–8

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”

Key Insight:

• “Abide” means to dwell, remain, stay connected.
• God is not calling for visits—He is calling for residence.

A relationship with God means:

• You stay connected through prayer
• You grow through His Word
• You bear fruit through obedience

2. Christianity Is Rooted in Love, Not Law

Matthew 22:37–38

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.”

God didn’t say:

• “Follow rules first”
• He said: “Love Me first”

Key Insight:

• Love is the foundation of relationship
• You cannot have a true relationship without love

Religion says: Do things for God
Relationship says: Love God and walk with Him

3. Relationship Requires Surrender

Luke 9:23–24

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

A relationship with God is not casual—it is intentional and sacrificial.

What does surrender look like?

• Denying your own will
• Choosing God’s way daily
• Following Jesus consistently

Key Insight:

• You cannot follow God and still be led by self
• Relationship demands commitment

4. Relationship Begins with a Personal Decision

Romans 10:9

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Christianity starts with:

• A confession (what you say)
• A belief (what you carry in your heart)

Key Insight:

• You are not born into this relationship
• You enter it by faith and personal decision

5. Why Christianity Is Not a Religion

Religion:

• Based on rules and rituals
• Focuses on outward actions
• Creates distance between man and God
• Is about trying to reach God

Relationship:

• Based on grace and love
• Focuses on the heart
• Brings intimacy with God
• Is about God reaching man through Jesus

Powerful Truth:
Religion says: Work to be accepted
Relationship says: You are accepted, now walk with God

6. Evidence of a True Relationship with God

From John 15:7–8, we see:

1. Abiding in Christ – Consistency in God
2. God’s Word in you – Transformation through scripture
3. Answered prayer – Communication with God
4. Fruitfulness – Visible change in your life

Conclusion

Christianity is not about:

• Church attendance only
• Religious titles
• External appearance

It is about:

• Walking with God daily
• Loving Him deeply
• Following Him fully

God is not looking for religious people—He is looking for sons and daughters.

Call to Action

Ask yourself:

• Do I know God, or do I only know about Him?
• Am I abiding in Him daily?
• Is my life producing fruit?

Closing Statement

Christianity is not a system you practice—it is a relationship you live.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus,
Thank You for calling us into a relationship with You.
Help us to abide in You daily, to love You with all our hearts, and to follow You completely.
Remove every religious mindset and draw us into deeper intimacy with You.
Let our lives bear fruit that glorifies You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
