READINGS FOR MARCH 8TH 2026

SUNDAY IN THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT (YEAR A)

SAINT (S) OF THE DAY: ST. JOHN OF GOD FIRST READING

“Give us water to drink”... (Ex 17.2).

A reading from the Book of Exodus 17:3.7

In those days: The people thirsted for water, and the people murmured against Moses, and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?”

So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand the rod with which you struck the Nile, and go.

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the fault-finding of the children of Israel, and because they put the Lord to the test by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

*The word of the Lord....*

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

PSALM 95:1-2.6-7abc.7d—9 (R. cf. 7d, 8a)

R/. O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts.

Come, let us ring out our joy to the Lord;
hail the rock who saves us.
Let us come into his presence, giving thanks;
let us hail him with a song of praise. R/.

O come; let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us,
for he is our God and we
the people who belong to his pasture,
the flock that is led by his hand. R/.

R/. O that today you would listen to his voice! Harden not your hearts.

O that today you would listen to his voice!
“Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as on that day at Massah in the desert
when your forebears put me to the test;
when they tried me,
though they saw my work.” R/.

SECOND READING

“God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (Romans 5:1-2.5-8)

Brethren: Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

While we were yet helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man — though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION...

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL JOHN 4:42.15

Glory and praise to you, O Christ. Lord, you are truly the Saviour of the world; give me living water, that I may not thirst. Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL

“Aspiring of water welling up to eternal life.”

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (John 4:5-42)

At that time: Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Jacob’s well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?”

Jesus said to her, “Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” *Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain; and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”

Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him.

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things.”

Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” *Just then his disciples came. They marvelled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, “What do you wish?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”

They went out of the city and were coming to him.

Meanwhile the disciples begged him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” So the disciples said to one another, “Has any one brought him food?”

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour; others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour.”

*Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word, They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.”

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

CELEBRANT:

Dear brethren, our Lord assures us that whoever drinks of the water that he gives shall never thirst. Conscious of this truth, let us pray that we may realize that true satisfaction comes from uniting ourselves with Christ and for our other needs.

FOR THOSE IN GOVERNMENT: (Pause) that they may work harder towards ensuring that all peoples have access to water and other resources needed for daily living. (Pause) Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR THE SICK AND THEIR CAREGIVERS: (Pause) that they may know the compassionate love of Jesus who is our life and health. (Pause) Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR OURSELVES: (Pause) that, during this season of lent, we may forsake our sinful ways and unite ourselves the more with Christ, the living water, who alone can give us true satisfaction. (Pause) Let us pray to the Lord.

FOR OTHER INTENTIONS: (Pause) (the sick, church projects or other activities). (Pause) Let us pray to the Lord.

*MARCH 1ST 2026.*

*SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT.*

*FIRST READING*
The call of Abraham, the father of the People of God.

*A reading from the Book of Genesis (GENESIS 12: 1 - 4a)*

In those days: The Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and by you all the families of the earth shall bless themselves.” So Abram went, as the LORD had told him.

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*
Taken from Psalm 33: 4 - 5, 18 - 19, 20 and 22 (R.) 22

And the response is;
*R/. May your merciful love be upon us, as we hope in you, O Lord.*

The word of the Lord is faithful,
and all his works to be trusted.
The Lord loves justice and right,
and his merciful love fills the earth. *R/.*

Yes, the Lord’s eyes are on those who fear him,
who hope in his merciful love,
to rescue their souls from death,
to keep them alive in famine. *R/.*

Our soul is waiting for the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
May your merciful love be upon us,
as we hope in you, O Lord. *R/.*

*SECOND READING*
God calls and enlightens us.

*A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy (2 TIMOTHY 1: 8b - 10)*

Beloved: Take your share of suffering for the Gospel in the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, and now has manifested through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.

*The Word of the Lord.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
Matthew 17: 5

*Glory and praise to you, O Christ.*
From the shining cloud the father’s voice is heard: this is my beloved Son, hear him.
*Glory and praise to you, O Christ.*

*GOSPEL*
“His face shone like the sun.

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (MATTHEW 17: 1 - 9)*

At that time: Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking, when behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is raised from the dead.”

CATHOLIC READINGS FOR FEBRUARY 22ND 2026

SUNDAY IN THE FIRST WEEK OF LENT (YEAR A)

SAINT (S) OF THE DAY:

Today the Mother Church celebrates the “Rite of Election or Enrollment of Names” for the Catechumens of Christian Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Other celebrations are not allowed, not even funeral Masses

THEME OF THE SUNDAY:

Temptation.

In this time of Lent, the Church invites us to reflect on temptation.

The first reading tells us of the unfaithful man, the man who lets himself be seduced by evil and chooses to go against the will of God.

This man destroys himself and condemns himself to unhappiness.

The second reading describes the behaviour of Jesus, the obedient son of his Father.

The Gospel describes the temptations that Jesus faced in his mission of salvation.

Our own temptations are not very different.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON CF. PS 90:15-16

When he calls on me, I will answer him; I will deliver him and give him glory, I will grant him length of days.

COLLECT

Grant, almighty God, through the yearly observances of holy Lent, that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in Christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son….

FIRST READING

Creation of our first parents, and their sin.

A reading from the Book of Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7

The Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.”’

But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate.

Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.

*The word of the Lord...*

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

PS 51:3-4.5-6ab.12-13.14 and 17 (R. cf. 3a)

R/. Have mercy, O Lord, for we have sinned.

Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your merciful love;
according to your great compassion,
blot out my transgressions.
Wash me completely from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin. R/.

My transgressions, truly I know them;
my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone, have I sinned;
what is evil in your sight I have done. R/.

R/. Have mercy, O Lord, for we have sinned.

Create a pure heart for me, O God;
renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence;
take not your holy spirit from me. R/.

Restore in me the joy of your salvation;
sustain in me a willing spirit.
O Lord, open my lips
and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. R/.

SECOND READING

“Where sin has abounded, grace has abounded all the more.”

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (Romans 5:12-19)

Brethren: As sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned—sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.

Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass.

For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the effect of that one man’s sin. For the judgement following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification.

If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Then as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men.

For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

*The word of the Lord...*

Or shorter:

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans 5:12.17-19

Brethren: As sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned.

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

*The word of the Lord...*

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION...

VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL MATTHEW 4:4b

Glory and praise to you, O Christ. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

GOSPEL

Jesus fasted forty days and was tempted.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 4:1-11

At that time: Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”’

Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will give his angels charge of you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.”’

Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”’

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.”’

Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
