Good morning family
Let’s talk about GBV
YES GBV,
What about GBV?
GBV stands for gender-based violence. It refers to violence directed at a person because of their gender or gender identity, and is rooted in gender inequality and power imbalances. While it disproportionately affects women and girls, men, boys, and gender minorities can also be victims. Common forms of GBV:
• Physical violence (hitting, beating, injury)
• Sexual violence (r**e, forced s*x, coercion)
• Psychological/emotional violence (intimidation, controlling behavior, threats)
• Economic/financial violence (controlling finances, withholding resources)
• Sexual harassment (in person or online)
• Harmful practices (female ge***al mutilation/cutting, forced marriage)
• Human trafficking and exploitation
• Violence against children linked to gender norms
Where it occurs:
• Homes, workplaces, schools, communities, and online environments.
Why it happens:
• Driven by gender inequality, rigid norms, and power imbalances; reinforced by laws, policies, and social norms.
Why it matters:
• Violates human rights and harms health, safety, and development; has wide-ranging physical and mental health impacts and economic costs.
Addressing GBV:
• Strengthening laws and survivor-centered services
• Prevention through education, changing norms, and bystander intervention
• Economic empowerment and protective policies
• Data collection and monitoring to guide action
