The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) wishes to inform the faithful and members of the public that a Book of Condolences for the late Emeritus Archbishop of Lusaka, Most Rev. Telesphore George Mpundu, who also served for a number of years as ZCCB President, has been opened at ZCCB Kapingila Guest House in Lusaka, and members of the public are free to come through and sign.

Dr. Alick Banda, on behalf of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, regrets to announce the death of Archbishop Emeritus Telesphore George Mpundu (1947–2026), a distinguished shepherd of the Catholic Church in Zambia. The Vatican’s doctrine chief warned Wednesday that the plan of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) to consecrate new bishops without papal mandate will represent a schismatic act resulting in excommunication.

“This act will constitute ‘a schismatic act,’ and ‘formal adherence to schism constitutes a grave offense against God and entails the excommunication established by the law of the Church,’” said Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
