FORMER CHAVUMA LAWMAKER NABBED FOR CARRYING A FIREARM IN PUBLIC

Police have arrested former Chavuma Member of Parliament VICTOR LUMAYI for allegedly going armed in public at a nomination centre in North western province, contrary to Section 84 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Mr. LUMAYI was apprehended on 24th May, around 17:30 hours in Zambezi District.

It is alleged that on 20th May, 2026, around 08:30 hours, at Chavuma District Council Offices, which were being used as a nomination centre for Chavuma Parliamentary Constituency, Mr. LUMAYI entered the premises while armed with a firearm without lawful authority, causing fear and alarm among members of the public.

Police public relations officer GODFREY CHILABI says officers recovered one Ta**us pistol and fourteen rounds of ammunition from the suspect who has been released on bond and is expected to appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, Police in Kalumbila district have arrested REDSON SISALA aged 45 for allegedly going armed in public at Kalumbila Town Council Civic Centre, which was being used as a nomination centre for Parliamentary and Mayoral candidates by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Mr. CHILABI says the suspect was found in possession of a 9mm Girsan pistol and ten rounds of ammunition, he openly carried the firearm, causing panic and disrupting proceedings.

He adds that Mr. SISALA has since been released on police bond, pending court appearance.
Police also arrested seven other suspects in Kalumbila District for idle and disorderly conduct, contrary to Section 178(f) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

How safe is the President’s signature?—SACCORD demands probe into UPND adoption certificate scandal

By United Voice Radio

The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has expressed concern over the double adoption certificates within the ruling United Party for National Development, questioning the security of the President’s signature.

Speaking on United Voice Radio’s Add Your Voice programme Sunday afternoon, SACCORD Managing Director, Arthur Muyunda said the double adoption certificates for a single seat suggests someone forged the Republican President’s signature.

Mr. Muyunda has urged the UPND to allow the police to launch investigations into the development, saying it contributed to the conflict that characterized the filing of nominations and could further fuel political violence ahead of elections.

“You know what worries me most? Those certificates are signed by the secretary general and the president. It means that someone was forging the signature of the president. How safe is the signature of the president? If someone was forging? So they should effectively do an investigation. In any case, they should engage the police to do an investigation. Because that was the biggest source of conflict,” Muyunda said.

Meanwhile, the SACCORD director commended President Hakainde Hichilema for demonstrating leadership and warning against political violence regardless of party affiliation.

He has called on the ruling party to use the campaign period to sell its development to citizens.

“We expect the ruling party to go out there and explain what they have achieved,” he said. “Competition is not about who is strongest in terms of muscles.”

Muyunda also called on opposition political parties to campaign peacefully and provide policy alternatives instead of fuelling tensions.

“We want presidents from all political parties to go out there and preach a message of peace,” he said. “The opposition should tell us where the UPND has failed and how they will do better themselves.”

His remarks come amid growing concern over tensions linked to adoption processes in the ruling party as Zambia moves closer to elections.
