CATECHISM INSIGHT:

What Is a Creed?

A creed is a summary of the essential teachings of faith. It contains the core beliefs that members of a religious denomination profess and serves as a means of identifying and distinguishing one faith community from another.

Are There Biblical Creeds?

Yes. The Bible contains several statements of faith that believers used to express their common conviction.

In the Old Testament, Israel proclaimed:

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!" (Deuteronomy 6:4)

This confession united God's people in their belief in the one true God, even when surrounded by nations that worshipped many gods.

The New Testament also contains concise confessions of faith, such as:

β€’ "Jesus is Lord!" (Romans 10:9)
β€’ "Maranatha" β€” "O Lord, come" (1 Corinthians 16:22)
β€’ "The Lord is risen indeed" (Luke 24:34)

These declarations testify that salvation is found in Jesus Christ.

REFLECTION
A creed is more than words, it is a confession of faith from the heart. As believers, we boldly confess that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour, trusting in Him for salvation and eternal life.

"If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
Romans 10:9
