Topic: The Hebrew Meaning of “Dress It” and “Keep It”

■Text: Genesis 2:15

“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”

■The original Hebrew words used in Genesis 2:15 reveal a much deeper meaning than simply gardening.

1. “Dress It” — Hebrew: עָבַד (ʿābad)

Pronunciation: aw-bad
Meaning:

●To work
●To serve
●To cultivate
●To labor
●To minister
●To worship (in some contexts).

■This word appears throughout the Old Testament for both physical labor and service to God.

Spiritual Significance

■Adam was not merely instructed to farm the garden; he was called to:

●Serve God's purpose in it.
●Develop its potential.
●Cultivate what God had entrusted to him.

Exercise responsible stewardship.

■The word ʿābad later became associated with priestly service in the Tabernacle, suggesting that Adam's work in Eden had a priestly dimension.

2. “Keep It” — Hebrew: שָׁמַר (shāmar)

Pronunciation: shaw-mar
Meaning:
●To guard
●To protect
●To preserve
●To watch over
●To observe carefully
●To keep charge of.

Spiritual Significance

■Adam was appointed as a guardian of the Garden. His responsibility was:

■To watch over what God had entrusted to him.

■To protect it from corruption and intrusion.

■To preserve its holiness and order.

■The same word is often used for keeping God's commandments and guarding sacred things.

■Prophetic Insight
Together, ʿābad and shāmar reveal two dimensions of kingdom stewardship:

●Hebrew Word
Meaning
Responsibility
ʿĀbad.

■To serve, cultivate, work
Develop what God gives you
Shāmar.

■ To guard, preserve, protect
Protect what God gives you.

■God's pattern is:

●What God gives you must be cultivated (ʿābad) and protected (shāmar).

■Application
Every believer has a "garden":

●Your relationship with God
●Your ministry
●Your family
●Your calling
●Your gifts

■You are called to:

●Dress it (ʿābad), develop, nurture, and make it fruitful.
●Keep it (shāmar), guard, protect, and preserve it.

Prophetic Principle

■Fruitfulness comes through ʿābad (cultivation), & longevity comes through shāmar (preservation).

■What you cultivate grows; & what you guard remains.
