A02Absolutes

In a world where it seems that the only thing that counts is one's personal values and how one feels about an issue, does the Bible speak about absolutes? It's in the Bible, Psalm 111:4, 7, 8, NIV. "The Lord is gracious and compassionate. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are steadfast for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness.

Does God ever change? It's in the Bible, Malachi 3:6, NKJV. "For I am the Lord, I do not change"

Is there such a thing as truth? It's in the Bible, John 17:17, NKJV. "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."

God's Word does not change. It's in the Bible, Psalm 93:5, NRSV. "Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore."

Won't time change God's Word and meaning? It's in the Bible, Matthew 24:35, NKJV. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away."

When the Day of Judgment comes, God's absolute, unchangeable law will judge everyone. It's in the Bible (James 2:10-12, NKJV): "For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. For He who said, 'Do not commit adultery,' also said, 'Do not murder.' Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty."

God will hold everyone accountable because of the absolutes He has given in His law. It's in the Bible, Romans 2:6, 11, NKJV. "Who will render to each one according to his deeds. For there is no partiality with God."

Abortion

What does God say about the life and personhood of a fetus? People have worth and identity before they are born. It's in the Bible, Jeremiah 1:5, NIV. "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

God is at work in a person's life while he or she is in the womb. It's in the Bible, Psalm 139:13-14, NIV. "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

God's commandment forbids the taking of life. It's in the Bible, Exodus 20:13, NIV. "You shall not murder."

What about in the case of in**st or r**e? It's in the Bible, Deuteronomy 24:16, NKJV. “Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin"

How can I avoid making the wrong choice? God is always willing to help. It's in the Bible, James 1:5, NKJV. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."

Trust God, rather than rely on your own thinking. It's in the Bible, Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths"

What if I don't know if I have the strength to make the right choice? It's in the Bible, Philippians 4:13, NKJV. "I can do all things through Christwho strengthens me"

What if I have made a mistake? God will not let you be tried more than what you can handle. It's in the Bible, 1 Corinthians 10:13, NKJV. "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."

God can save above and beyond if we come

Verse 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. 7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

A Cause of Wonder.--Why should John "wonder with great wonder," as it reads in the original, when he saw the woman drunken with the blood of saints? Was the persecution of the

people of God any strange in his day? Had he not seen Rome launch its most fiery anathemas against the church, himself being in banishment under its cruel power at the time he wrote? Why, then, should he be astonished, as he looked forward, and saw Rome still persecuting the saints? The secret of his wonder was this: All the persecution he had witnessed had been from pagan Rome, the open enemy of Christ. It was not strange that pagans should persecute Christ's followers. But when he looked forward and saw a church professedly Christian persecuting the followers of the Lamb, and drunk with their blood, he could but wonder with great amazement.

World Union Of Church and State

Verse 1 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will show unto thee the judgment of the great w***e that sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 and upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

In verse 19 of the preceding chapter, we are informed that "great Babylon came in remembrance before God to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath." The prophet now takes up more particularly the subject of this great Babylon. In order to give a full presentation of it, he goes back to recount some of the facts of her history. That this apostate woman as presented in this chapter is a symbol of the Roman Catholic Church, is generally believed by Protestants. Between this church and the kings of the earth there has been illicit connection. With the wine of her fornication, her false doctrines, the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk.

Church and State.--This prophecy is more definite than others applicable to the Roman power in that it distinguishes between church and state. We have here the woman, the church, seated upon a scarlet-colored beast, the civil power, by which she is upheld, and which she controls and guides to her own ends, as a rider controls the animal upon which he is seated.

What's Missing?

First, some questions: What is the center of all our problems? Is it spiritual? Could our lack of the Holy Spirit lie at the root of our lukewarm Christian experience? If the answer is yes, then why do we lack the Holy Spirit in our lives?

The Bible’s answer: “Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:2, 3). As we learned in the reading for Day 1, God invites us to continually ask for the Holy Spirit in our lives. “Why do we not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit, since this is the means by which we are to receive power? Why do we not talk of it, pray for it, preach concerning it?” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 22).

James also suggests that we do not receive when we “ask amiss.” Perhaps he means that God cannot bless when our minds are set on “things of the flesh.” Paul explains, “For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:5, 6).

What is the “carnal mind” that Paul speaks of? Actually, God’s Word describes three groups of people and their relationship to Him. Within each group are many variations depending on parental training, inherited character, self-control, age, culture, education, and so on. But despite these differences, we find just three basic groups: the “natural” or “worldly” man, the “spiritual” or “spirit-filled” man, and the “carnal” man or person “of the flesh.”

These three groups are described in 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 and 3:1-4. For now we’ll just mention natural man in passing; he lives in the world and does not yet have a relationship with God. Church members belong to the other two groups, and a quick glance at each description will help reveal where the problem is mainly hidden. The question is, which group do I belong to? A brief examination should help with self-diagnosis—keeping in mind that we want to look at our own lives, not the lives of others! Wh

request shows how much we value God’s offer.

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11:13).

Dear Father, thank You for promising to give us the Holy Spirit. We ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit now, and we thank you for answering. Teach us to rely on this promise.

God wants to give us life in abundance!

“‘He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive” (John 7:38, 39).

Dear Lord, thank You for granting rivers of living water to those who believe in You. Please help us to live in daily, continual surrender to Christ so that You can fulfill this promise in our lives

Well and the Great Truths of SalvationKnow clearly the steps of salvation and to more fully experience them.

In this lesson we will look at a story that is a parable of salvation. Then we will explore the meaning of the parable by looking at the steps for salvation through various Bible texts. Read the story and think about its meaning.

One day a boy fell into a well. He was a good swimmer but of course he was immediately very frightened and tried to climb out. Each time he slipped back down the walls. His hands and his clothes were badly ripped. The top of the well seemed so far away. He knew he would drown unless someone came to help him.

“Help!” he screamed. “Somebody help me!”

Immediately a kind face peered over the edge of the well. “I saw you fall,” said the man. “I’m here to help you.” The boy was very surprised that someone had answered so quickly.

“Here is a rope,” said the man as he tossed it down into the well.

“Is it strong enough?” asked the boy.

“It is very strong,” assured the man.

“But will you hold it tight?” The boy was feeling a bit afraid to trust this man he hardly knew.

“I will hold it tight,” he promised gently. “Hurry now, you are getting more and more tired. Let go of the side. Stop swimming and grab the rope.”

Wearily, the boy grabbed on and the man pulled him quickly out of the well. The boy fell exhausted to the ground. Then the man bandaged the boy’s scr**es. He even gave him his shirt to replace the torn one.

“Please be careful not to fall in again!” counseled the kind man.

“Thank you for saving me!” cried the boy. “I will never forget what you have done.”

The Meaning of the Parable

Do you ever feel like that boy in the well? Do you feel discouraged by your sins and wonder if you are really a Christian? Do you feel confident that God has saved you from your sins and will save you from this world when Jesus comes again? Take courage today! God has sent the Holy Spirit to bring Jesus’ gift of salvation more deeply into our l

The Obedient Lifestyle and Prayer

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him”

1 John 5:14, 15

We Are Powerless, But He Is All-Powerful

The three angels’ messages call us to a life of obedience. The first angel’s message declares, “Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come” (Revelation 14:7). The New Testament was written in the Greek language and the word for fear used in this text can also be translated respect, reverence, or honor. It is an attitude of loyalty to God, a mental ascent to be obedient to His will. The wise man states it this way: “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man’s all. For God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14).

When we think of keeping God’s commandments it is very easy to reflect on our weaknesses, our frailty, and our inability to do what we in our inmost souls desire. Too often we desire to do right but fail to find the strength to carry out those desires. With the apostle Paul we must acknowledge, “For what I am doing I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do” (Romans 7:15). What was the apostle’s solution to this dilemma? At the end of the chapter he asks the question, “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” And he responds with this positive statement of affirmation: “I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24, 25). There is a solution to the problem of constantly failing, repenting, and failing again. Paul says it is Jesus Christ our Lord. We are weak, but He is strong. We are frail, but He is almighty. We are powerless, but He is all-powerful. Ellen White states it beautifully in an article that she wrote in 1897:

“Ch

The Final Message and the Holy SpiritSpeak God’s final message to the world through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus promised that He would return to end suffering and take us to heaven. He predicted many things that must happen before He returned. Most of the signs have already been fulfilled. His coming is very soon. We who live at this time should know clearly what must yet happen and what God wants us to do. We are to be part of His preparing the people of this world for Jesus’ coming.

Read Matthew 24:14. Jesus talked about many signs of the end. What sign did He say must happen right before Jesus returns?

This is the exciting event we are waiting for. Over the last 150 years the gospel has moved rapidly throughout the world. We can really see that Jesus’ coming is near. However, millions of people still do not know Jesus. Whole groups of people with their own language and culture have no Christian living among them who can share the gospel. This final sign before Jesus’ coming has not yet happened.

God sees those millions that live without hope as they face death. He sees them vainly worshipping idols and performing ceremonies that can never save them. He longs for His church to rise up and take the good news of His salvation to every corner of the world.

Read Matthew 9:36-38. How did Jesus feel when He saw the crowd of people?

What does He ask us to do in light of the need?

Are you praying for God to finish His work? Are you part of gathering in the final harvest?

The Harvest

Read Revelation 14:14-16. The Bible speaks of the day when Jesus’ returns as a great day of harvest. What does it mean that the earth will be ripe and Jesus will reap it?

When Jesus comes again, there will be only two groups of people—those on Jesus’ side and those against. Those who fully belong to God will be taken to heaven. Those who have settled into evil will be destroyed by Jesus’ holy glory. Every day people are making decisions that are ripening them into one of the
