*FIRST READING*
All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

*A reading from the second Letter of Timothy (2 TIMOTHY 3: 10 - 17)*

Beloved: You have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings, what befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra what persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and imposters will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the Sacred Writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*
Taken from Psalm 119: 157, 160, 161, 165, 166 and 168 (R.) 165a

And the response is;
*R/. The lovers of your law have great peace, Lord.*

Though my foes and oppressors are countless,
I have not swerved from your decrees. *R/.*

Truth is the sum of your word;
All your just judgements are eternal. *R/.*

Though princes oppress me without cause,
My heart reveres your word. *R/.*

The lovers of your law have great peace;
No stumbling block for them. *R/.*

I await your salvation, O Lord;
I fulfill your commands. *R/.*

I obey your percepts and decrees;
All my ways are before you. *R/.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
John 14: 23

*Alleluia.*
If a man loves me, he will keep my word, says the Lord; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him.
*Alleluia.*

*GOSPEL*
“How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? ”

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (MARK 12: 35 - 37)*

At that time: As Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put your enemies under your feet. ’ David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.

*MEMORIAL OF SAINT CHARLES LWANGA & COMPANIONS, Martyrs.*

*FIRST READING*
“Rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands.”

*The beginning of the second Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy (2 TIMOTHY 1: 1 - 3, 6 - 12)*

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God whom I serve with a clear conscience, as did my fathers, when I remember you constantly in my prayers. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control. Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but take yours share of suffering for the gospel in the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, and now has manifested through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.

*The Word of the Lord.*

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*
Taken from Psalm 123: 1 - 2ab, 2cdef (R.) 1a

And the response is;
*R/. To you, O Lord, have I lifted up my eyes.*

To you have I lifted up my eyes,
you who dwell in the heavens.
Behold, like the eyes of slaves
on the hand of their lords. *R/.*

Like the eyes of a servant
on the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God,
till he show us his mercy. *R/.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
John 11: 25a, 26

*Alleluia.*
I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; he who believes in me shall never die.
*Alleluia.*

*GOSPEL*
“He is not God of the dead, but of the living. ”

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (MARK 12: 18 - 27)*

At that time: Sadducees came to Jesus, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother. There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children; and the second took her, and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; and the seven left no children. Last of all the woman also died. In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” Jesus said to them, “Is not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.”

*NINTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR II*

*FIRST READNG*

_“We wait for new heavens and a new earth.”_

*A reading from the second Letter of Saint Peter (2 Peter 3:12- 15a.17-18)*

Beloved: Wait for and hasten the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire! But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

*The word of the Lord.*

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*

Taken from Psalm 90:2, 3 - 4,10,14 and 16 (Response is taken from Psalm 90: verse 1)

And the response is:
*R/. O Lord, you have been our refuge, from generation to generation.*

Before the mountains were born,
or the earth or the world were brought forth,
you are God, from age to age. *R/.*

You turn man back to dust,
and say, “Return, O children of men.”
To your eyes a thousand years
are like yesterday, come and gone,
or like a watch in the night. *R/.*

Seventy years is the span of our days,
or eighty if we are strong.
And most of these are toil and pain.
They pass swiftly and we are gone. *R/.*

At dawn, fill us with your mercifiil love;
we shall exult and rejoice all our days.
Let your deed be seen by your servants,
and your glorious power by their children. *R/.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
Taken from Ephesians 1:17 - 18

*ALLELUIA*
May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts that we might know what is the hope to which he has called us.
*Alleluia.*

*GOSPEL*

_“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesars’, and to God the things that are God’s.”_

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (Mark 12: 13-17)*

At that time: They sent to Jesus some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to entrap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true, and care for no man; for you do not regard the position of men, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a coin, and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were amazed at him.
