Text: JOHN 5:1-9
Title: TAKING LIFE FOR GRANTED, A HINDRANCE TO GOD'S MISSION

↪️INTRODUCTION:
- Many people are alive physically, but are no longer living with purpose and expectation.
- When life becomes ordinary to us, we stop recognizing the goodness and mission of God.
- Taking life for granted can make people spiritually stagnant and comfortable in situations God wants to change.
- In this passage, Jesus meets a man who had been sick for thirty-eight years and transforms his life completely.

⤴️BRIEF BACKGROUND:
- Time: During Jesus’ earthly ministry
- Place: The Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem
- Context: A man had suffered for thirty-eight years and had lost hope of restoration
- Big idea: Jesus confronts spiritual stagnation and calls people into purposeful living

(1️⃣) SOME PEOPLE BECOME COMFORTABLE IN THEIR BROKENNESS (Vs. 5-6):
- The man had remained in the same condition for thirty-eight years beside the pool.
📍Lesson;
~ When people take life for granted, they may become comfortable in spiritual weakness, sin, hopelessness, and stagnation.
~ God desires transformation, not stagnation.

(2️⃣) EXCUSES CAN DELAY DIVINE OPPORTUNITIES (V.7):
- Instead of responding directly to Jesus, the man explained why he could not be healed.
📍Lesson;
~ Excuses keep people focused on limitations instead of God’s power.
~ God’s mission moves forward when people stop dwelling on problems and start trusting Him.

(3️⃣) JESUS CALLS PEOPLE TO RISE ABOVE LIMITATION (V.8):
- Jesus commanded the man, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
📍Lesson;
~ God’s Word carries power to lift people from fear, defeat, and passivity into purposeful living.
~ We cannot fulfill God’s mission while remaining spiritually paralyzed.

(4️⃣) GOD RESTORES US SO WE CAN MOVE FORWARD (V.9):
- The man was healed immediately and began to walk.
📍Lesson;
~ God restores people not merely for comfort, but for purpose.
~ Every blessing, healing, and opportunity should advance God’s kingdom and mission.

(5️⃣) TAKING LIFE FOR GRANTED HINDERS GOD’S MISSION:
- The man’s long condition had shaped his mindset and expectation.
📍Lesson;
~ When people become spiritually passive and ungrateful, they hinder what God desires to do through them.
~ God calls His people to live intentionally and purposefully.

✝️APPLICATION:
1. Refuse to become comfortable in spiritual stagnation.
2. Stop allowing excuses to control your destiny.
3. Respond immediately when God calls you to rise.
4. Use your blessings and opportunities for God’s glory.
5. Live every day with purpose and gratitude before God.

📌 CONCLUSION:
- The story of the man at Bethesda teaches us that God does not want His people to remain in stagnation.
- Jesus came to restore, renew, and reposition people for His mission.
- Taking life for granted blinds people from seeing God’s purpose and power.
- When we respond to Christ in faith and obedience, we become vessels through which God fulfills His mission.
- The question today is; Are you willing to rise and walk in the purpose God has for your life?

Text: GENESIS 12:1–3; HEBREWS 11:8
Title: ABRAHAM'S COMMITMENT, AN EXAMPLE OF BEING EMPOWERED FOR MISSION

↪️INTRODUCTION:
- The story of Abraham is not just about personal blessing, but about God’s mission for the world.
- God called one man in order to reach all nations.
- Abraham’s life shows us that empowerment is not for comfort, but for mission.

⤴️BRIEF BACKGROUND:
- Time: Patriarchal period
- Place: From Ur to Canaan
- Context: A world drifting away from God after the events of Genesis 1–11
- Theme: God initiates a mission through one man to bless all nations

(1️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS ARE CALLED BY GOD (Gen. 12:1)
- God commanded Abraham to leave his country, people, and father’s house.
📍Lesson;
~ Mission begins with God’s call, not human initiative. True empowerment starts when we respond to God’s voice.

(2️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS TRUST GOD’S PROMISE (Gen. 12:2)
- God promised to make Abraham into a great nation and to bless him.
📍Lesson;
~ Our strength for mission is not in what we have, but in what God has promised. God’s Word is our empowerment.

(3️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS LIVE FOR A GREATER PURPOSE (Gen. 12:3)
- God declared that all peoples on earth would be blessed through Abraham.
📍Lesson;
~ We are blessed to be a blessing. Empowerment is never for self it is for impacting others.

(4️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS WALK BY FAITH (Heb. 11:8)
- Abraham obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
📍Lesson;
~ Mission requires obedience without full understanding. Faith moves us forward even when the path is unclear.

(5️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS PARTICIPATE IN GOD’S GLOBAL PLAN
- The promise to Abraham is fulfilled through Jesus Christ, bringing salvation to all nations.
📍Lesson;
~ Our mission today is part of God’s greater redemptive plan in Christ. We are empowered to continue what God began.

✝️APPLICATION:
1. Respond to God’s call without delay.
2. Trust God’s promises even when circumstances are unclear.
3. Use your blessings to impact others.
4. Walk by faith, not by sight.
5. Commit yourself to God’s mission in the world.

📌 CONCLUSION:
- The life of Abraham teaches us that empowerment is not about status, but about purpose.
- God calls, God promises, and God sends.
- When we respond in faith, we become vessels through which God blesses the world.
- The question is: Are you available for God’s mission?

Text: ACTS 4:23–31
Title: EVIDENCE OF BEING EMPOWERED FOR MISSION

↪️INTRODUCTION:
- After being threatened by the religious authorities, Peter the Apostle and John the Apostle returned to the believers.
- Instead of responding with fear, the church responded with prayer.
- In answer to their prayer, God filled them with the Holy Spirit and empowered them to continue His mission boldly.

⤴️BRIEF BACKGROUND:
- Time: Early church period after Pentecost
- Place: Jerusalem
- Context: Persecution, threats, and growing gospel witness
- Theme: God empowers His church in the face of opposition

(1️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS RETURN TO FELLOWSHIP (V.23)
- Peter and John went back to their own people and reported everything.
📍Lesson;
~ Mission is sustained in Christian community. We need one another for encouragement and strength.

(2️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS PRAY TO GOD (Vs.24–28)
- They lifted their voices together and acknowledged God as Creator and Ruler over all things.
📍Lesson;
~ Confidence for mission comes when we know that God is in control.

(3️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS ASK FOR BOLDNESS (Vs.29–30)
- They did not pray for safety alone they prayed for boldness to speak God’s Word and for God to move with power.
📍Lesson;
~ The church must pray for courage more than comfort.

(4️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS ARE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT (V.31a)
- After they prayed, the place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.
📍Lesson;
God responds to united prayer with fresh empowerment.

(5️⃣) EMPOWERED BELIEVERS CONTINUE THE MISSION (V.31b)
- They spoke the word of God boldly.
📍Lesson;
~ True empowerment always leads to witness, service, and action.

✝️APPLICATION:
1. Run to God when opposition comes.
2. Stay connected to fellow believers.
3. Pray with confidence in God’s sovereignty.
4. Ask God for boldness.
5. Use the power God gives to advance the gospel.

📌 CONCLUSION:
- Acts 4:23–31 teaches that prayer is not a last resort it is the church’s greatest weapon.
- When believers pray together, God empowers them to continue the mission with boldness.
- A praying church becomes a powerful church, and a powerful church becomes a missionary church.

REFORMED CHURCH IN ZAMBIA
KASAMA CONGREGATION
FUNERAL SERVICE OF THE LATE DORA SIMPEMBA
20 APRIL, 2026

Text: MATTHEW 25:31-46
Title: PREPARE TO MEET THE KING

↪️INTRODUCTION:
- Today we gather in sorrow, yet we are reminded that life does not end at the grave.
- This passage points us beyond death to the day when Christ shall return in glory.
- Every funeral reminds us that one day all humanity will stand before God.

(1️⃣) CHRIST THE COMING KING:
- Jesus is not only Savior; He is also the righteous Judge.
- He will come in glory with His angels.
- Every knee shall bow before Him.

(2️⃣) ALL NATIONS GATHERED BEFORE HIM:
- Rich and poor, young and old, great and small will stand before Christ.
- Death is the great equalizer; all people must face eternity.
- No earthly title or wealth can save us on that day.

(3️⃣) THE SEPARATION OF THE SHEEP AND THE GOATS:
- Christ will separate people as a shepherd separates sheep from goats.
- The sheep represent those who belonged to Him.
- The goats represent those who rejected Him.
- This teaches that there are only two eternal destinies.

(4️⃣) EVIDENCE OF TRUE FAITH:
- The righteous cared for the hungry, thirsty, stranger, sick, and imprisoned.
- Good works do not save us, but they reveal a transformed heart.
- Genuine faith produces love and compassion.

✝️COMFORT IN TIMES OF LOSS:
- If our departed loved one trusted Christ and walked with Him, there is hope.
- God sees every act of kindness and every faithful deed.
- Nothing done for Christ is forgotten.

📍A WARNING TO THE LIVING:
- This passage calls each of us to examine our lives.
- Are we truly following Christ?
- Have we shown His love in how we treat others?
- Today is the day to repent and believe.

📌CONCLUSION:
- One day Christ will come in glory.
- The question is not whether He will come, but whether we are ready.
- Let this funeral remind us to live faithfully, love deeply, and prepare to meet the King.
Amen.
