APOSTOLIC NUNCIO TO ZAMBIA AND MALAWI ARRIVES AT HEROES STADIUM FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION CEREMONY

By Sydney Mwamainda - Lumen TV-Z

His Excellency Archbishop Gian Luca Perici, Apostolic Nuncio to the Republic of Zambia and the Republic of Malawi, is among the distinguished members of the Diplomatic Corps who have arrived at Heroes Stadium ahead of the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony of President-elect Hakainde Hichilema.

The presence of the Apostolic Nuncio at this important national event reflects the longstanding diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Zambia. As the representative of His Holiness the Pope, Archbishop Perici fulfils a unique mission that encompasses both ecclesial and diplomatic (Ambassador) responsibilities.

In his ecclesiastical role, the Apostolic Nuncio serves as the Pope’s representative to the Catholic Church in Zambia and Malawi, fostering communion between the local Churches and the Holy Father. At the same time, he serves as the diplomatic representative of the Holy See—the sovereign entity of Vatican City State—accredited to the Governments of Zambia and Malawi.

As Dean or member of the Diplomatic Corps, depending on local protocol, the Apostolic Nuncio participates in significant national ceremonies and state functions, representing the Holy See and conveying the goodwill of the Holy Father towards the people and Government of the host nation.

Like ambassadors and high commissioners appointed by other sovereign states, Apostolic Nuncios are entrusted with the responsibility of strengthening relations between the Holy See and the countries to which they are accredited, while also promoting dialogue, peace, human dignity, and the common good.

Archbishop Gian Luca Perici's attendance at the inauguration ceremony underscores the Holy See’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with Zambia and its continued support for the nation's democratic institutions and aspirations.

ZCCB LAUNCHES 2026 SEASON OF CREATION WITH CALL TO PROTECT WATER AND DEFEND THE POOR

By Fr. Arthur Ntembula

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has officially launched the 2026 Season of Creation, calling on Zambians to protect the environment and stand up for communities affected by climate change.

Speaking today at the Catholic Secretariat in Lusaka, ZCCB Secretary General Very Rev. Fr. Francis Mukosa urged Christians to move beyond prayer into concrete action to care for the earth. The Season of Creation runs from September 1 to October 4 under the theme "Living Water," drawn from the biblical vision of Ezekiel.

Fr. Mukosa warned that critical water sources face growing threats from pollution, irresponsible extraction, deforestation, and climate change. He added that water is life, essential for agriculture, forests, animals, and human survival. Creation, he stressed, is a gift from God rather than raw material for human exploitation.

He emphasized that environmental degradation is directly linked to human dignity and social justice. While poorer communities contribute the least to global pollution, they suffer the most from droughts, floods, crop failures, and water shortages.

To reverse this destruction, Fr. Mukosa called on individuals and local communities to adopt sustainable habits. He urged people to plant trees, protect wetlands, use water responsibly, practice environmentally friendly farming, and advocate for policies that safeguard vulnerable families.

He concluded by challenging the public to think about future generations and the kind of land, water, and climate they will leave behind.

Gospel of the Day (Luke 4,31-37)

Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!

Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

Gospel of the Day (Luke 4,16-30)

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."

Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.

He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'"
And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.

It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.

They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through the midst of them and went away.
