LIFE HISTORY OF PASTOR PITMAN SIAMAUNDU
Pastor Pitman Siamaundu was born in 1953 to Ernest and Martha Siamaundu. He was born into a family of 8 children and grew up in a pastoral home. Because his father was a pastor whose ministry involved frequent transfers, young Pitman attended different primary schools as the family moved from one place to another. This early exposure to pastoral life and church service helped shape the man and minister he would later become.
He attended Rusangu Secondary School, where he completed his secondary education in 1971. After secondary school, he enrolled at ZASTI School of aviation in Lusaka to train as a pilot. However, his career took a different direction when he left aviation training and joined the Zambia Adventist Publishing Press. Through commitment, hard work and dedication, he rose through the ranks and eventually served as Production Manager.
Pastor Siamaundu formally began denominational service in 1983 as Assistant Director of the Adventist Book Centre (ABC). His experience in publishing and literature ministry became an important foundation for a life that would eventually be devoted to the proclamation of the gospel.
From 1984 to 1988, he studied at Solusi university in Zimbabwe, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology. He later pursued further studies in the United States of America, including studies at Purdue University.
After completing his theological training, Pastor Siamaundu returned to Zambia and entered pastoral ministry. He served as a pastor in Mazabuka, beginning what would become many years of pastoral and evangelistic ministry.
His ministry later took him beyond the borders of Zambia to Namibia, where he devoted a significant part of his ministerial life to the work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. During his years there, he served in various capacities, including as a church pastor, district pastor, Personal Ministries director and itinerant evangelist. His work demonstrated his willingness to serve wherever the Church called him and his passion for reaching people with the gospel.
After one period of service in Namibia, Pastor Siamaundu returned to Zambia and served as pastor of Lusaka Central Seventh-day Adventist Church. His ministry later expanded beyond the local congregation into the growing field of media evangelism.
Pastor Siamaundu became one of the pioneers of what would eventually become Hope Channel Zambia. The ministry initially operated under the name Gospel Pe*******on, and he took over its leadership from Dr Pardon Mwansa. He became part of the pioneering work that helped establish and develop the Church's use of electronic media for evangelism in Zambia.
He later returned to Namibia, where he served for approximately 13 more years. During this period, he continued serving in various capacities as a church pastor, district pastor, Personal Ministries director and evangelist. Evangelism remained a major part of his ministry, and he applied himself wholeheartedly to preaching and advancing the mission of the Church.
Upon his eventual return to Zambia, Pastor Siamaundu once again entered media ministry and served as Director and Speaker of Hope Channel Zambia. His face and powerful preaching voice became familiar to many Adventist homes and viewers. Through television ministry, he carried the gospel beyond the walls of the local congregation and reached a much wider audience.
He laboured faithfully in the ministry until his retirement in 2018, after which he settled in Choma. Retirement from formal denominational employment, however, did not remove the preacher in him. He remained passionate about the gospel and continued to be respected as a seasoned minister who had devoted a substantial part of his life to the service of God and His Church.
Pastor Siamaundu applied himself fully to his calling as a minister and preacher of the gospel. Whether working in publishing, pastoring local congregations, directing Personal Ministries, conducting evangelistic meetings or preaching through television, he served with dedication and commitment. He was particularly remembered as a gifted preacher whose commanding voice, storytelling ability and evangelistic passion enabled him to communicate the Word of God in a memorable way.
Beyond his public ministry, Pastor Siamaundu was a devoted family man. He cared deeply for his wife, children, siblings and members of his extended family. He was committed to maintaining strong family relationships and was known for being supportive and available to his siblings and other relatives. He was born into a family of eight children, of whom only two now remain.
Those who knew him personally also remember his warm and cheerful personality. He loved joking and telling stories and had a natural ability to bring laughter and warmth into the company of others. Behind the powerful preacher and experienced church leader was a man who enjoyed people and treasured relationships.
One of the most outstanding characteristics of Pastor Siamaundu's life was his love for prayer. This remained evident even during his final days. While lying on his hospital bed, weakened by illness, he continued to think about the spiritual needs of those around him. When family members, friends and church members came to visit and encourage him, one of the first things he would often tell them was, “Let me pray for you.”
Those simple words beautifully capture the spirit of his life and ministry. Even when he needed prayer, he wanted to pray for someone else. Even when others came to encourage him, he still desired to encourage them. Even from his hospital bed, the pastor in him continued to minister.
Pastor Pitman Siamaundu leaves behind a rich legacy of Christian service. His journey took him from the Adventist publishing work to theological training, from pastoral ministry in Zambia to many years of missionary service in Namibia, from local church pulpits to evangelistic platforms, and eventually to the television ministry of Hope Channel Zambia.
Through all these assignments, one thing remained constant: his commitment to the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He gave himself to the work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and applied his gifts, energy and experience to the advancement of its mission.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters, together with other relatives, friends, former colleagues and the wider Seventh-day Adventist Church family.
Pastor Siamaundu will be remembered as a pastor, evangelist, church administrator, media pioneer, broadcaster, storyteller, family man and man of prayer. His voice may now be silent, but the sermons he preached, the congregations he served, the evangelistic work he conducted, the media ministry he helped develop and the lives he touched remain part of his enduring legacy.
Perhaps no words capture his spirit of ministry more fittingly than those he continued to speak even from his hospital bed:
“Let me pray for you.”
They were more than words spoken near the end of his life. They reflected the spirit with which he had lived it: a life dedicated to God, the gospel, his family and the service of others.
