*Psalm 92:13-14 (KJV):* Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.
*ENDLESS BROOKS IV*
Evan Roberts was the young preacher at the heart of the Welsh revival. At the height of this revival, the spirit of transformation swept across the country, closing bars and movie theatres, and turning prostitutes into Bible teachers.
It is said of him that ‘he carried the ability to usher in the presence of the Holy Spirit as almost a tangible force.’
But the story of this prayerful man has a sad ending. Towards the end of his life, Evan was virtually a forgotten man. The revival lasted about a year, yet Evan himself died at seventy-two, having utterly disappeared from public life in the intervening years.
Several factors may have contributed to the drying of this brook, but I wish to emphasize one – his relationship with Mrs. Jessie Penn-Lewis.
As recorded by Roberts Liardon in his 'God's Generals', she is said to have been a controversial preacher whose doctrine had turned her into an outcast in Wales. In the name of helping Evan recover from the pain and disillusionment he had suffered at the hands of his critics, Mrs. Jessie spirited Evan away from Wales, the place of his call, to England.
Liardon further narrates that she denounced his spiritual gifts until he was convinced that the supernatural operations he had experienced could not have been from God. To add insult to injury, she selfishly agreed to a decision from medical advisors for Evan never to undertake pulpit ministry again.
If these assertions are true, then there is a fundamental lesson therein for us. Be careful, child of God, who you bring into your inner circle. Some people, no matter how well-meaning, can bury your destiny.
You must discern who should be kept close and who can be loved from afar. This wisdom will keep your brooks flowing.
Hallelujah!
*FURTHER STUDY:* 1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 13:20
*GOLDEN NUGGET:* Be careful, child of God, who you bring into your inner circle. Some people, no matter how well-meaning, can bury your destiny. You must discern who should be kept close and who can be loved from afar.
*PRAYER:* My loving Father, I thank You for this word. I understand the importance of the call upon my life. Because I do, I apply wisdom in all my relationships. The Spirit of discernment works in me and defines my associations, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
