DO NOT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING.
Most of us today rationalize a situation in our minds and weigh the pros and cons against each other as if we have the outcome of the situation in our hands and know exactly what is going to happen. This is very arrogant and self-confident of humanity. Sometimes you also ask for the opinions of others to make your decision sound more convincing. The irony of it all is, if you have set your mind on something, and someone gives their opinion in a direction that you no longer agree with, then you follow your own head anyway. In my opinion, this is how humanity causes their own downfall.
Today's verse that I want to focus on is the following:
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.
Many people know this verse, which is wonderful, but do you REALLY trust the Lord with your WHOLE heart to make your decisions for you? He knows exactly what will happen in the future, so why wouldn't you want to do it? The Lord knows when you trust Him, yourself or someone else to help you make big decisions. God knows everything. So why not make Him a part of everything? We are so caught up in our own world, that we only let God in when we feel like we want to, then people wonder why their world is falling apart.
God knows what is best for us. It is not always exactly what we want, but what is better. We must learn to trust God in every area of our lives. I think when your brain is so busy you can't sleep because you have all these plans in your mind, God sit and wait for you to hand it over to Him. He is not going to take it from you. The best quality we have from God is that we have free will to do whatever we want to do, and that includes free will to carry the burden or to hand the burden over to Him.
We must not be wise in our own eyes, but be willing to listen to and be corrected by God's Word and wise counselors. Bring your decisions to God in prayer, use the Bible as your guide, and then follow God's leading. He will direct your paths by both guiding and protecting you.
He promises that when you acknowledge Him in EVERYTHING you do, He will show you the right path. God is not a man who changes his mind as He feels. When He says He is going to do something, He is going to do it. Why then do you want to rely on your own strength and ability when God is willing to give you His strength and ability freely. It is that "me, myself and I" attitude and controlling spirit inside you that always wants to be in control of everything, and then when things don't go the way you planned, there is big trouble and everyone just has to stay out of your way so that you can sort out the mess you have caused yourself. It doesn't make sense! Ask the Lord for help from the beginning so that there is no mess to fix later. When God's blessing is on it, I can guarantee you it will be a success.
Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
God knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him. We regularly pray to God for what we want and ask Him to provide for our needs. Many people wonder, why should they pray when God already knows what they want to pray for? This is the beauty of prayer. God gives us the chance to make Him a part of our needs. The most important part of prayer is this: "Lord, you know what I need, but not my will, but your perfect will be done in my life." This shows God that no matter what we WANT, we give Him the freedom to do in our lives what He wants to do because He knows what is best. Sometimes what we think we need is not what we really need.
Proverbs 16:9
A man's heart plans his way,
But the Lord directs his steps.
Isaiah 55:8-9
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord.
"For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
James 4:13-17
Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit"; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a v***r that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that." But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
The Word of God clearly says that we do not think as God thinks and our ways are not God's ways. We cannot even speak with certainty about the day of tomorrow. There is nothing wrong with planning, but do not be so sure about it that you simply cut God out completely.
Many times we quickly plan in the car how the day will go and connect different feelings to the different scenarios, that we cause our own anxiety even before we even know what exactly is going to happen. Then you get to work, and everything goes exactly as you didn't think it would go. It's exhausting. The Lord goes before you. He is already where you want to be. Allow His perfect will to be done in your life. Sit back and watch how the Lord works. You will see how drastically your life changes when you make God part of everything. The peace that the world cannot provide, but that only God can provide will wash over you like a stream of fresh water and you will permanently sit with the thought: "God is in control" and this will restore your peace.
