What does it really look like to surrender to the Holy Spirit?
The Bible tells us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). I often picture our lives as a vessel sailing across the sea.
The question is: Who is standing at the helm?
Many of us have welcomed the Holy Spirit onto the vessel, but we still have our hands firmly gripping the wheel. We ask Him to bless our plans, protect our journey, and help us reach the destination we’ve chosen. We want Him on board—but we still want to be the one steering.
Then, when we hit an iceberg or find ourselves in the middle of a storm, we become frustrated with God and ask, “Lord, why did You let this happen?”
But did we ever truly surrender control of the vessel?
In the natural, when someone lifts their hands before the police, they’re saying, “I surrender. I give up my right to be in control.”
Yet when it comes to surrendering to the Holy Spirit, our surrender is often conditional.
We lift our hands in worship and say, “Holy Spirit, I surrender.” But the moment the vessel starts heading in a direction that isn’t comfortable… when He asks us to forgive someone who hurt us… to step out in faith… to let go of something we’ve been holding onto… or He leads us through waters that feel uncertain or rough… we quietly reach for the wheel again.
True surrender is not simply inviting the Holy Spirit onto the ship.
True surrender is stepping away from the helm.
It’s saying, “Holy Spirit, this vessel belongs to You. You know the destination better than I do. You see what I cannot see. You know where the hidden rocks are, where the dangerous currents lie, and which route will ultimately fulfil the Father’s purpose for my life. I trust You completely. Take full control of this vessel.”
The beautiful thing about surrender is that the Captain has never lost a ship.
He sees beyond the horizon.
He knows the end from the beginning.
He doesn’t steer us according to what is easiest—He steers us according to what is eternal.
Sometimes the waters will be calm.
Sometimes they’ll be rough.
Sometimes He’ll ask us to wait.
Sometimes He’ll ask us to move.
Sometimes the journey won’t make sense.
But every instruction He gives, every course He sets, and every storm He allows has a purpose. He is not leading us to make life difficult; He is leading us into the perfect will of the Father.
Every day, may our prayer be:
“Holy Spirit, I surrender this vessel to You. I lay down my plans, my preferences, my fears, my expectations, and my need to be in control. Steer my life wherever You desire. I trust Your voice, Your wisdom, Your timing, and Your direction completely.”
Because the safest place for a vessel is not in calm seas—it is under the control of the right Captain.
Storms will come. Winds will blow. Waves will rise. But when the Holy Spirit is at the helm, we can rest in the confidence that He never loses His way, He never abandons His own, and He always leads us according to the perfect will of the Father.
So today, take your hands off the wheel.
Lift them in surrender.
Trust the Captain.
And let the Holy Spirit lead your vessel into everything the Father has prepared for you.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” - Proverbs 3:5-6
