FOLLOW UNTIL THE END

God's Word Devotional by The Ministry of God’s Word by Victor Kadeji
Memory Verse:
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” — Revelation 2:10
Scripture Reading:
Hebrews 12:1–2; John 21:18–22
Meditation
Discipleship is not measured by beginnings but by endurance.
Many start with excitement. Few continue with conviction.
A river reaches the sea because it keeps flowing.
The disciple’s question is not: “How far have I come?”
It is: “Am I still following?”
Jesus told Peter about future sacrifice and then gave him one command:
Follow Me.
Your assignment is not comparison.
Your calling is not competition.
Your responsibility is faithfulness.
At the end of life, the greatest testimony will not be success.
It will be this:
I followed Jesus.
Practical Steps
Renew your commitment to Christ.
Remove one distraction from your spiritual life.
Write a personal statement of surrender.
Prayer Points
Lord, preserve me to the end.
Let my heart remain steadfast.
May my life bring pleasure to You.
Closing Reflection:
The cost of discipleship is great—but the cost of refusing Christ is greater. The cross may be heavy, yet it leads to life. Follow Him completely.
Here is an expanded version in a devotional style similar to Gbile Akanni’s pattern—deeply reflective, Scripture-centered, searching, and ending with a strong call to consecration.
MEMORY VERSE
"Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." — Revelation 2:10
SCRIPTURE READING
Hebrews 12:1–2; John 21:18–22
FOLLOW UNTIL THE END
The greatest challenge in discipleship is not how to start; it is how to continue until the end.
Many believers begin their Christian journey with joy and enthusiasm. They respond quickly to the call of God. Their hearts burn with zeal. Their testimonies are fresh and vibrant. Their commitment appears unquestionable.
Yet, the Christian race is not won by those who start fastest. It is won by those who endure faithfully.
The Lord never promised that the pathway of discipleship would be easy. He never concealed the cost of following Him. Rather, He made it clear that anyone who would come after Him must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Him.
The issue therefore is not whether you once followed Christ.
The question is: Are you still following Him today?
The river reaches the ocean, not because it is powerful at its source, but because it keeps flowing despite rocks, bends, obstacles, and changing terrains.
Likewise, spiritual maturity is not measured by occasional moments of zeal. It is measured by consistent obedience through all seasons of life.
Some people follow Christ when the heavens are open and blessings abound. But when trials arise, they begin to reconsider their commitment. Others follow Him when the path is popular and convenient, but draw back when obedience becomes costly.
The Lord is looking for men and women whose hearts remain fixed on Him regardless of circumstances.
In our Scripture reading, Jesus spoke plainly to Peter concerning the future. He revealed that Peter's journey would include suffering, sacrifice, and eventually martyrdom. Yet after unveiling the cost, Jesus did not enter into lengthy explanations.
He simply said:
"Follow Me."
That command remains the essence of discipleship.
Peter immediately became concerned about another disciple. Looking at John, he asked, "Lord, and what shall this man do?"
How often we do the same.
We compare callings.
We compare ministries.
We compare opportunities.
We compare results.
We compare experiences.
But the Lord's answer to Peter is a needed correction for every disciple:
"If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou Me." (John 21:22)
The Christian race is personal.
God has a unique pathway for every disciple.
Your assignment is not comparison.
Your calling is not competition.
Your responsibility is faithfulness.
Many have lost their focus because they became occupied with what God is doing in another person's life. Some have abandoned their divine assignment while pursuing another man's calling. Others have become discouraged because their journey appears harder than that of those around them.
But the Lord is still saying:
"What is that to thee? Follow thou Me."
The writer of Hebrews exhorts us to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us, and to run with patience the race set before us. Notice that each believer has a race set before him by God.
You cannot run another man's race.
You must run your own.
And you can only run it successfully by keeping your eyes on Jesus.
The secret of endurance is not looking at the difficulties.
The secret of endurance is looking unto Jesus.
The more a disciple looks at people, the weaker he becomes.
The more he looks at circumstances, the more discouraged he becomes.
But the more he looks unto Jesus, the stronger his resolve becomes.
Our Lord Himself endured the cross because He saw beyond the suffering. He saw the joy set before Him. Therefore, every disciple who desires to finish well must continually fix his gaze upon Christ.
Beloved, the end of life is closer than the beginning.
The years are passing.
The opportunities are moving.
The race is advancing.
One day, every disciple will stand before the Lord.
On that day, earthly achievements will lose their significance.
Human applause will carry no value.
Titles, possessions, and accomplishments will fade away.
One matter will remain:
Did you follow Jesus faithfully?
The greatest testimony at the end of life will not be:
"I became successful."
It will not be:
"I became famous."
It will not be:
"I became influential."
The testimony that will matter eternally is this:
"I followed Jesus."
May we not merely begin well.
May we continue steadfastly.
May we finish faithfully.
May we follow Him until the very end.
PRACTICAL STEPS FOR TODAY
Examine your walk with God honestly and identify areas where your commitment has weakened.
Renew your covenant of obedience and surrender before the Lord.
Remove one distraction that competes with your devotion to Christ.
Spend time praying through God's purpose for your life instead of comparing yourself with others.
Write a personal statement of consecration and keep it where you can read it regularly.
PRAYER POINTS
Lord Jesus, preserve my heart and keep me faithful until the end of my earthly journey.
Deliver me from distractions, comparisons, and every weight that hinders my spiritual progress.
Grant me grace to endure trials, temptations, and oppositions without turning back.
Let my eyes remain fixed upon You in every season of life.
May my life bring pleasure, honour, and glory to Your Name.
O Lord, help me to finish my race with joy and fulfil the ministry You have committed into my hands.
Let me receive the crown of life promised to those who remain faithful unto death.
CLOSING REFLECTION
The cost of discipleship is great, but the reward is eternal. The cross may be heavy, but it leads to glory. The pathway may be narrow, but it leads to life. Do not turn back. Do not be distracted. Do not be weary in well-doing. Keep your eyes on Jesus, walk in obedience, and follow Him completely—until the end. Amen.
