ACTS SEVEN
Opening Verse
Acts 7:48 “The Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands.”
1. Set the Scene
Stephen wasn’t a pastor. He was a table-server 6:5, full of faith and the Holy Spirit 6:8. Yet when false witnesses accused him of speaking against Moses and the temple 6:13, he didn’t defend himself. He preached.
Sometimes your greatest sermon comes when you’re under pressure. Stephen used his trial to tell Israel’s story — and show how Jesus was the point of it all.
2. The Heart of Stephen’s Teaching
A. God Shows Up Outside the “Holy Places” 7:2-34
- God called Abraham in _Mesopotamia_ 7:2, not Jerusalem.
- He met Moses in _Midian_ at a burning bush 7:30, not the temple.
- He was with Joseph in _Egypt_ 7:9-10.
Lesson: If you feel far from God because you’re not in church, remember this — God is not limited to buildings. He meets people in exile, in pits, in wilderness. The temple was never the goal. God’s presence was.
B. We Have a History of Rejecting Deliverers 7:9, 7:25-28, 7:35-39
- Joseph’s brothers sold him out 7:9.
- Israel rejected Moses: “Who made you ruler?” 7:27.
- They turned back to Egypt in their hearts 7:39.
Stephen’s point: “You always resist the Holy Spirit” 7:51. The same people who claimed to honor Moses rejected Jesus, the Prophet Moses wrote about 7:37.
Lesson: We reject God when He doesn’t come how we expect. Ask: Am I resisting God because He’s not fitting my plan?
C. God Wants Hearts, Not Just Rituals
7:48-51
Stephen quotes Isaiah: Heaven is My throne. What kind of house will you build Me? 7:49.
The temple was never about the stone. It was about surrender. But they were “stiff-necked… uncircumcised in heart” 7:51. Religious, but resisting.
Lesson: You can be in church every Sunday and still miss God. He’s after a circumcised heart — one cut free from pride and self-rule.
3. Stephen’s Response When It Cost Him 7:54-60
They stoned him. But look at his reaction:
1. He saw Jesus 7:55 — Standing, ready to receive him. Not sitting in judgment.
2. He prayed like Jesus 7:59-60 — “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” and “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
He died preaching and forgiving. That’s what a Spirit-filled life looks like under fire.
1. Stop limiting God to one place, time, or method. He’s working in your “Mesopotamia” too.
2. Check your heart for areas where you’re saying “Who made You ruler?” to Jesus.
3. Live ready to see Jesus. Stephen’s eyes were on heaven, not the stones.
Closing Prayer
Lord, You are not confined to buildings or traditions. You met Abraham in a foreign land, Moses in a desert, Joseph in a prison. Meet me where I am today. Circumcise my heart. Take away any resistance to Your Spirit. Give me Stephen’s courage to speak truth and Stephen’s grace to forgive. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus, standing at Your right hand. In His name, Amen.
