🔎 10 Hidden Facts About Saint Anthony of Padua That Few People Know

Most people know Saint Anthony of Padua as the patron saint of lost things. We pray to him when keys disappear, important documents go missing, or when we seek God's help in times of uncertainty. But behind this beloved devotion is a fascinating story that many Catholics have never heard.

1️⃣ He was not Italian. Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, around 1195, and was originally named Fernando Martins de Bulhões. He only became known as "of Padua" because he spent his final years and died in Padua, Italy.

2️⃣ He first belonged to the Augustinian Order. Before becoming a Franciscan, he devoted himself to prayer, study, and contemplation as an Augustinian canon.

3️⃣ He desired to become a martyr. Inspired by the courage of Franciscan missionaries who gave their lives for Christ in Morocco, Anthony joined the Franciscans hoping to die preaching the Gospel. God's plan, however, led him elsewhere.

4️⃣ A storm changed the course of his life. While returning from North Africa due to illness, a violent storm diverted his ship to Italy. What seemed like a disappointment became the path to his true mission.

5️⃣ His gift for preaching was discovered by accident. During an ordination, no one had prepared a homily. The quiet and humble friar was unexpectedly asked to speak. Those present were astonished by his wisdom and profound knowledge of Sacred Scripture.

6️⃣ Saint Francis personally entrusted him with teaching theology. Anthony became one of the first Franciscan teachers, proving that intellectual formation and humility could go hand in hand.

7️⃣ His tongue remained incorrupt. When his tomb was opened years after his death, his tongue was found remarkably preserved—a sign often associated with the holiness and truth of his preaching ministry.

8️⃣ He preached even to the fish. According to tradition, when people refused to listen, he preached by the seash**e, and fish gathered near the surface as if listening to the Word of God, leading many witnesses to conversion.

*Saint Anthony of Padua - Biography*

*Birth + Early Life*
Born *Fernando Martins de Bulhões* in Lisbon, Portugal around *1195*. He came from a wealthy, noble family. At age 15 he joined the Augustinian Canons Regular at the Abbey of St. Vincent in Lisbon, then moved to Coimbra to avoid distractions from family/friends.

*Becoming a Franciscan*
In 1220, the bodies of 5 Franciscan martyrs killed in Morocco were brought to Coimbra. Their sacrifice moved Fernando deeply. He joined the new Franciscan Order, took the name *Anthony* after St. Anthony the Great, and went to Morocco to preach. But he got seriously ill and had to turn back.

*Shipwreck + Calling*
His ship was blown off course to Sicily in 1221. While recovering, he attended an ordination of Dominican + Franciscan friars in Forlì, Italy. The Franciscans had no one prepared to preach, so the shy Anthony was pushed to speak. He gave such a powerful, Scripture-filled homily that St. Francis himself heard about it and made Anthony the order’s first official theology teacher.

*Preaching + Teaching*
Anthony became famous across Italy + France for his preaching. People called him the “Hammer of Heretics” because he could explain the faith so clearly that people returned to the Church. He preached to huge crowds outdoors when churches overflowed. Legends say even fish listened when people wouldn’t 😊
He also taught theology to young friars in Bologna, Padua, and Montpellier. His sermon notes are still studied today.

He died young at age *36* on *June 13, 1231* in Padua, Italy. The people of Padua loved him so much they finished building the massive Basilica of St. Anthony there within a year.

At that time: Jesus said to the crowds of the Jews, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever.”

Umkhosi omkhulu

Isidlo nesiphuzo sokuphila kwaphakade

UNkulunkulu wabagcina bephilile abantu bakhe ehlane ngokubapha ukudla nokuphuzwayo kuvela ezulwini. Isidlo nesiphuzo asipha sona namhlanje esakramenteni ngumZimba neGazi leNdodana yakhe, lokhu kunikelwa ukuze kuphile umhlaba.

Wayebondla ngokolweni omuhle kakhulu, wabenelisa ngoju lwasedwaleni.

Asikhuleke.

Nkulunkulu, wena owasishiyela iSakramente elimangalisayo
laba yisikhumbuziso sokufa nokuvuka kwakho, siyacela ukuba usenze
sidumise izimfihlakalo zomzimba negazi lakho ngendlela ezosenza sibe yilokhu sizwa ngaphakathi ezinhliziyweni zethu izithelo zosindiso Iwakho.

Sicela ngeNkosi yethu uJesu Kristo iNdodana yakho ephila ibusa kanye nawe noMoya Ocwebileyo ninguNkulunkulu munye izikhathi ngezikhathi.

Duteronomi 8:2-3, 14b-16a

UNkulunkulu waninika ukudla nina noyihlo enaningakwazi.

Kuleyomihla uMose wathi kubantu: “Khumbulani ukuthi iNkosi uNkulunkulu yayinihola njalo iminyaka engamashumi amane, nisahamba ehlane. Yebo yanidedela ukuba nehlelwe ukuhlupheka ukuze inivivinye ibone ukuthi nicabangani ezinhliziyweni zenu, nokuthi niyayilalela yini imithetho yayo noma qha. Yanehlisela ukudinga nendlala, yabuye yanondla ngoMana, ukudla enaningakwazi nina nokhokho benu. Yafuna ukuniqondisa ukuthi umuntu akaphili ngesinkwa sodwa, kodwa uphila ngayilelo nalelozwi elivela emlonyeni weNkosi.

Ningayikhohlwa iNkosi uNkulunkulu wenu, eyanikhipha kwelaseGibhithe, endlini yobugqila. Yanihola ehlane lelo elikhulu elesabekayo, eligcwele izinyoka ezibulalayo nawofezela, ogwadule olomile olungénamanzi yaniqhumisela amanzi edwaleni, yanondla ngoMana, ukudla okwakungaziwa oyihlo."

Thina esibaningi sisinkwa sinye, simzimba munye.

Bazalwane, isitsha sokubonga esibonga ngaso, akusikho yini ukuhlanganyela igazi likaKristo na? Nesinkwa esisihlephulayo, akusikho ukuhlanganyela umzimba weNkosi na? Lokhu thina esibaningi sisinkwa sinye, simzimba munye, thina sonke esihlangene ekudleni isinkwa sinye lesi.

ISILANDELO

Lesisilandelo singashiwo uma kuthandeka noma ngokugcwele noma ngendlela efinyeziwe kusukela emazwini athi Nas' isinkwa. Uma sicuIwa kusetshenziswa indlela yeculo elithi: Izilimi zabo bonke kodwa emavesini 10 no-11 imigqa yesithathu neyesine ilandela indlela efana neyemigqa yokuqala neyesibili.

1)Bandla, mtuse uMsindisi, onguMholi noMalusi, umhubele ungaphezi. Thatha amagama onke, makabongwe nokubongwa uyadlul' udumo lonke!

2)Namhla sidumis' isinkwa esiphila siphilisa, kuludaba olukhulu. Wasinika abafundi ekudleni kokugcina njengombiko weVangeli.

3)E, kungathi kungaduma kuhlokome kuthokoze 06/05b13sawenhliziyo. Sijabula namhla sithi:

4)E, leMvana yePhasika iqedil' umtheth' omdala owawuyifanekisa. Ho, busuku hamba kahle
"UMsindisi walimisa leli sakramente lakhe."

5)Okwenziwa nguMsindisi wakuyala abafundi, wathi nabo benze njalo.
Siguqula eMiseni lezizipho ezethulwa zibe umhlatshelo wethu.

6)Imfundiso yethu ithi lesisinkwa sab' inyama newayini lab' igazi. Akwenzeki ngokwemvelo kungamandla ophezulu, kholwa noma ungaboni!

7)Okusala kuyisimo, luphelil' uqobo lwaso, sicashis' imfihlakalo. Kuyinyama khona sodla kuligazi siliphuze wonk' uKrist' ukokubili.

8)Kalimali la edliwa, ngoba akalimazeki, kwamukelwa lonk' uqobo. Abaningi kumb' emunye bonke bayamudl' ewonke akapheli ngokudliwa

9)Kudl' abahle, kudl' ababi kant' impetho kayifani badl' inhlanhla, badl' ukufa. Bayazijezis' ababi, babusiswe bon' abahle, noma bedla kanye-kanye.

10)Kuthi kuhleshulw' isimo nocezwana lukuphethe konke okukwesigcwele. Kholwa yilokhu ungasoli! E, uqobo kalwephuki kuyephuk' isimo sodwa wen' uJesu engoniwe ekuleliSakramente.

11)Nas' isinkwa sengilosi singukudla kwezihambi siyisinkwa sabantwana
nant' iLanga lifikile, asiswel' okudlulile.

12) Jesu sinkwa esiyiso nomalusi onesihe, ak' usondle usaluse esingafanel' izinja. Okwakusifanekisa nguy' ulsaak owethulwa, yiy' iMvana yePhasika nguy' uMana wasehlane.

usiyise kulelozwe okungekho kufa kulo, okungekho kufa kulo. Wen' okwaz' ukwenza konke osalusa emhlabeni ak' usenze sidle nawe sijabule nawe njalo khona lapho ezulwini khona lapho ezulwini. Amen.

Kuleyonkathi uJesu wakhuluma esixukwini samaJuda wathi: "Mina ngiyisinkwa esiphilayo esehla ezulwini. Osuka edla lesisinkwa uyakuphila naphakade; isinkwa engiyakuninika sona siyinyama yami eyakunikelelwa ukuphila komhlaba."

Abesephikisana amaJuda athi: "Ló, angasinika kanjani inyama yakhe siyidle na?" UJesu wayesethi kuwo: "Ngiyaqinisa ngempela ngithi kini, uma ningayidli inyama yeNdodana yomuntu, niphuze igazi layo, aniyikuba nokuphila phakathi kini. Odla inyama yami, aphuze igazi lami unokuphila kwaphakade, mina-ke ngiyakumvusa ngosuku lokugcina. Ngoba inyama yami ingukudla okuyikho, negazi lami yisiphuzo esiyiso. Osuka edla inyama yami aphuze igazi lami, uhleli kimi, nami ngihlala kuye. Njengoba uBaba ophilayo engithumile, mina-ke ngiphila ngoBaba, kanjalo naye ongidlayo uyakuphila ngami.

Lesi yisinkwa esehlé ezulwini. Akunjengalokhu oyihlo babedla uMana, bafa. Odla lesisinkwa uyakuphila kuze kube phakade."

Ukuthandazelwa kwezipho

Nkosi, ngalezizipho esizethulayo ake uliphe iBandla lakho ubunye noxolo nobudlelwane obufanekiswa ngokomoya yisinkwa esenziwe ngezinhlamvu eziningi zikakolweni newayini elenziwe ngamagrebhisi amaningi.

Ngempela kufanele, kulungile, ukuba sikubonge ngezikhathi zonke nasezindaweni zonke, wena Baba ocwebileyo, Nkulunkulu Somandla Simakade, ngoKristo iNkosi yethu.

Owathi edla nabaphostoli bakhe ukudla kokugcina, wamisa isikhumbuziso esimiyo sokufa kwakhe okusindisayo onqamlezweni, wanikela kuwe iMvana engenasici enguye uqobo, eyisethulo sokubonga okupheleleyo owasamukelayo.

Ngalemfihlakalo ejulile wondla umndeni wakho ongamakholwa akho,
uwucwebise ukuze isintu sonke emhlabeni owodwa sikhanyiselwe lukholo olulodwa sihlanganiswe luthando olulodwa.

Nkosi,ukwamukela kwethu umzimba negazi lakho eliligugu kusizwisa intokozo yasezulwini siselapha emhlabeni. Sengathi ngaleliKhomuniyone esesamukele kulo ubuNkulunkulu bakho ungasenza size siphumelele kuleyontokozo yaphakade embusweni wakho ongapheliyo ezulwini.
