The Forgiving King and the Unforgiving Servant

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Matt. 18:21-22 ESV)

oOo

“How many times should I forgive my brother?” Peter asks Jesus.

Jesus had just taught the disciples a redemptive process of bringing an erring brother back into fellowship (Matt. 18:15-20). Peter then asks Jesus for a specific number on forgiving.

The rabbinical guide at that time was to forgive three (3) times, based on Amos’ prophecies (Amos chapters 1 and 2). Peter doubles the figure and adds one more to bring it to seven (7).

But Jesus says seventy-seven times, implying an infinite number of times. Jesus wanted Peter to look at forgiveness from the standpoint of grace and not of justice. He tells a parable about a Forgiving King and An Unforgiving Servant.

The servant was probably a governor who collected taxes in a region within the kingdom. He owed the king the monetary equivalent of 60 million of a laborer’s daily wage – an impossible amount to pay. This servant therefore begs the king for mercy and asks for more time. The king takes pity on him and cancels his debt.

On his way out this same governor-servant meets a lower-level servant who owed him the monetary equivalent of 100 of a laborer’s daily wage. The second servant begs him for mercy and more time. But the goernor- servant rejects the plea and throws the man into prison.

When the king learned about this he confronted the unforgiving servant then turned him over to the jailers until he could pay back the money he owed.

Through the Parable Jesus shows us God’s grace in dealing with us. We are like the first servant – we can never pay back what we owe God. We are by nature sinful and unclean. No amount of giving to charitable causes, serving our neighbor, self-punishment or even religious activity will be enough to make amends for our sin. We deserve to be punished; we can only beg God for mercy.

But God did have mercy upon us. He sent Jesus to pay for our debt through His own precious blood. Jesus then defeated sin and death by rising from the grave. By God’s grace through our faith in Christ God cancels our debt and forgives us. More than that God restores our status as His children.

Because we have been forgiven we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us adopt grace as an attitude -- a way of life -- as we deal with sisters and brothers who have offended us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your loving me. Let Your Holy Spirit transform my heart so that Your grace may guide my attitude toward others. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection: In which of the following do you need the Holy Spirit to help you? (1) confronting an erring brother/sister; (2) being confronted with your sin; (3) forgiving and forgetting; (4) forgiving repeatedly.

SLOW DOWN AND BE PATIENT WITH LIFE

If You Are Looking For Wealth, Somebody else Is Looking For Health.

If You Are Looking For Health, Somebody else Just Dièd.

If You are Looking For Power, Somebody else Has Acquired And Used it, And he/she is now Powerless.

Each Time You Drive A Fancy Car, Somebody, Somewhere Is Dying In A Car Crash.

Each Time a New Mansion Springs From The Earth, A New Grave is Dug Below The Earth.

Each Time You Throw Away A Morsel, Somebody else somewhere is Searching For a Morsel To Survive.

Each Time You Throw Food Into Dustbin, Someone else Is Looking For Remnant To Eat.

Each Time You Ask God To Promote or Change Your Present Situation, Someone else Is Praying to Get To Your Present Situation.

For Each Smile On The Planet, There's a Drop Of Tear In Another Place On The Planet.

For Each Celebration Of Childbirth, There Are Tears of Bùrial.

Each Time You Urinate Or Drink Water, Remember Someone Is Using Pipe For The Same Purpòse.

So Always Be Thankful.

Think of the Goodness you have rather than the vanities you long for,..
