*PRAYER OF FAITH (5)*

*James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.*
*Vs 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.*
*Vs 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord*
*Vs 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.*

Recall that the phrase “he shall receive” implied literally “to take from,” or to take of.”

See how it was used in John 6.

John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
Vs 52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
Vs 53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
Vs 54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

Notice the “criteria” in receiving from the following phrases.

“…If any man eat of this bread…”

“…eat the flesh…”

“... drink the blood… ”

Obviously these phrases are figurative expressions used by Jesus to explain the role of the recipient in receiving what would be made available upon his death, burial and resurrection.

Thus, believing is an activity that shows that there is a responsibility on the part of the recipient to receive what the Father gave; the Son.

The day a man believes and receives, is not the day God gave.

The recipient has only taken advantage of what has already been given.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

The phrase “you shall receive” also literally implies “to take advantage of” what has been given. In other words, Jesus says “you shall take advantage of…”

Hence it is the responsibility of every believer to consciously receive in prayer.

*CONFESSION*
*I choose to take advantage of what is rightfully mine in Christ. AMEN!*

*PRAYER OF FAITH (4)*

*James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.*
*Vs 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.*
*Vs 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.*
*Vs 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.*

What did James mean by “receive anything from the Lord” in verse 7

The phrase “he shall receive” implies literally “to take from or take of”. Every time it was used by the authors, it was to describe an action, hence, it was never passive in its application.

The following are instances where it was used:

John 6:32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

Notice his emphasis on the character of God;

“…my Father giveth you”

“…and giveth life unto”

In verse 35, he explained the responsibility of the recipient - to receive what the Father has given by believing.

God’s responsibility which was demonstrated by His character of love was to give his son, our responsibility is to receive by believing (John 3:16).

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The act that he died for the world does not translate automatically to the world having everlasting life. Everlasting life is only received when a man believes. Thus receiving is an activity that happens consciously.

Believing is an activity that shows that there is a responsibility on the part of the recipient to receive what the Father gave in his son.

Thus, when a man chooses not to receive (what God has given),

it does not change the fact that God has already given. It also does not change the character of God as one who gives to all without finding fault.

*Confession:*
*God’s responsibility which was demonstrated by His character of love was to give his son, our responsibility is to receive by believing. Hence, I receive when I ask.*

PRAYER OF FAITH (2)

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Every time the believer prays to the father, he hears and gives.

Giving is consistent with the Father’s nature. James further lends credence to the nature of the father in Verse 17.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Hence, receiving after praying is dependent solely on the one asking, and not God. God gives every time we ask.

However James in admonishing the one asking says “let him ask in Faith…”

The focus is on the believer receiving, and not God giving.

Hence James’s emphasis is on the believer wavering in his mind about the character of God in giving. And, this mindset can hinder the believer from receiving what has been given to him/her by God in response to his prayer.

James mentioned in Chapter 5 that prayer makes power available (James 5:16) hence in the place of prayer, power is made available to meet the need and change the circumstance.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

He mentions that the prayer of a righteous man makes power available.

Who is a righteous man?

Recall James admonition from Chapter 1.

…if any of you lack wisdom… (Verse 5)
…to the twelve tribes… (verse 1)

He was addressing Jewish Christians primarily and by implication the church.

Hence the believer is the righteous man. The believer has been made righteous by his identification with Christ.

2nd Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

The believer has been made the righteousness of God in him (Christ). Hence the righteous man can pray without fear of fault or doubting.

CONFESSION:
I have received therefore am bold and free before my heavenly Father always!

*PRAYING FOR CHRISTIAN MEETINGS (2)*

*When we gather as believers, the essence is for us to edify one another.*

*Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;*
*Vs 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:*

The essence of the ministry gift is for the edifying of the body of Christ.

Then, we pray for the ministers, for utterance and boldness.

Ephesians 6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

Colossians 4:3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
Vs 4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

Acts 4:29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

We also pray for those responsible for handling other natural aspects of the service. This may include the protocol, ushering, operations teams etc.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

We pray for wisdom for them.

1st Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

We pray for orderliness in the course of the meeting.
Lastly, we pray for the participants of the meeting, for insight into God’s word to the end that they are edified. (Ephesians 1: 17-23, Ephesians 3: 14-20, Philippians 1: 9-11, Colossians 1: 9 - 11, Philemon 6)

*PRAYER: pray for the Christian meetings you are attending this year, for the ministers, for those organising the meeting.
