The Kevin Barry Division mourns the loss of our Brother, Mark Allen Steinmetz.
Mark, born on July 23, 1944, in Wakefield, Michigan, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana, surrounded by his loving family. Mark's life was defined by faith, family, education, athletics, and a lifelong commitment to serving others.
Mark was the beloved husband of Patricia "Pat" Steinmetz, sharing a remarkable partnership of fifty years built on love, faith, and mutual support. He was a devoted father to daughter Emily (Desi Spears) Steinmetz and son Michael Steinmetz, and a proud grandfather to Fitz and Penelope Steinmetz. He is also survived by his brothers Jay (Ginger), Jerry (Mary), Jim (Amber), and Charles (Anne) Steinmetz, and close family Marlaina (Steinmetz) Pertile. His wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering belief in his family shaped generations. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace (Wojchowski) Steinmetz; his sister, Sherry (Steinmetz) Steinberg; and his brother, Michael Steinmetz.
A proud graduate of Cathedral High School's Class of 1962, Mark established himself as one of the school's greatest student-athletes. He earned High School All-American and All-State honors in football while also becoming Cathedral's first wrestling state runner-up, helping establish a tradition of excellence that would inspire generations of Irish athletes. He continued his football career at Butler University, where he proudly competed for the Bulldogs.
Education and athletics became Mark's life's work. For 39 years, he served as a dedicated educator at Scecina Memorial High School. He influenced countless students not only in the classroom but also through his example of integrity, discipline, and compassion. Whether teaching Anatomy and Biology courses, organizing EF Education tours all over Europe, or mentoring young people, Mark believed in sharing his passions as much as in impacting achievement.
Wrestling remained one of Mark's greatest passions throughout his life. He devoted decades to the sport as a coach, official, tournament director, and mentor. His impact on Indiana wrestling was recognized with his induction into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Scecina Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2018. Beyond the high school level, he faithfully served the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) for many years as a tournament director and official, helping thousands of young wrestlers experience the values of sportsmanship, perseverance, and respect.
Mark's commitment to amateur athletics extended well beyond the wrestling mat. He served as Treasurer of the Indiana AAU and volunteered countless hours supporting major sporting events hosted in Indianapolis, including the Peace Games, Pan American Games, and numerous other local, national, and international competitions. His willingness to serve behind the scenes helped make opportunities possible for countless athletes and showcased his belief that sports could unite communities and enrich lives.
A man of deep roots in his Catholic faith, Mark remained active in many organizations that reflected his heritage and beliefs. He was honored as the 2010 Hibernian of the Year, and in 2023 he received the Hibernian President's Award from the Ancient Order of Hibernians, recognizing his lifelong dedication to faith, Irish heritage, charity, and service to others.
Those who knew Mark remember not only his accomplishments but also his humility, kindness, and generosity. He never sought recognition for himself; instead, he found joy in helping others succeed. Whether on the football field, in a wrestling gym, in the classroom, or serving the Indianapolis community, Mark consistently chose service over recognition and relationships over accolades.
His legacy lives on through the countless students he taught, athletes he coached, officials he mentored, friends he encouraged, and family members he loved so deeply. His influence can be measured not only by championships and honors but by the character he inspired in others.
