Today, as we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation,
Pope Leo XIV reminds us, as St. Francis did, that we are all brothers and sisters, and the path to peace is renewed hearts in service of Good, of God:

“Dear brothers and sisters, the path before us is clear, though it is not easy. We are called to allow our hearts to be renewed, so that we might seek peace and care for creation. Scripture tells us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from them (cf. Prov 4:23).
If we take up this task with humility and faith, we will become collaborators in God’s work of renewal. We will move, slowly but surely, from desert to garden, from division to communion, and from violence to peace.
May the Lord grant us the courage to walk along this path, so that in our time, swords may indeed be beaten into plowshares, and the promise of the Gospel may take deeper root in our world, and the peace of Christ may reign over all of creation.” Pope Leo XIV

For pilgrims, it is often a discovery that St. Francis spent almost half of his life after conversion in solitude. From his early prayer in front of the crucifix at San Damiano, where he prayed to God to “enlighten the darkness of my heart,” to his days at the Carceri, Greccio, and La Verna... and to wherever his feet led him, his relationship with everything was changed when he took the time to see. He learned to call all “brother and sister.

As we begin the month celebrating the Season of Creation, let’s take a moment to see. Can we, too, notice the indwelling of infinite love, God, in all creation?

Pilgrims, let's celebrate the Season of Creation! From 1st September to 4th October, Christians of various denominations celebrate the Season of Creation, a period dedicated to prayer, contemplation, and care for our common home.

It is a "a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment together. During the Season of Creation, we join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family in prayer and action for our common home.

Christians worldwide have embraced the season as part of their annual calendar. Pope Francis established the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation in the Roman Catholic Church in 2015, and in 2019 started celebrating the Season of Creation as well.

The season starts 1 September, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends 4 October, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

Throughout the month-long celebration, the world’s 2.2 billion Christians come together to care for our common home.This year, the closing of the Season of Creation, on October 4, will coincide with the eighth centenary of the Transitus of St Francis. For the Franciscan Family, this celebration further reminds us to experience the Season of Creation as a journey of peace, conversion, and care for our common home."

As we walk as pilgrims, let us care for our common home.

Today's Mindful Moment: Enjoy the garden just outside our door at Franciscan Pilgrimages (pictured). Or find one of your own. Take a moment to recognize the gifts all around us: the flowers outside our offices, the grasses growing along the highway, the fruit at the farmers market, all remind us of God’s abundant goodness shared with us.

We can move through our day so quickly that we forget to see. Today, take one slow breath and notice one gift of creation.

Sometimes a pilgrimage begins long before we ever set foot on the road.

In our latest pilgrimage newsletter, a Franciscan friar reflects on a journey that began with hearing his Brother’s stories of Franciscan pilgrimage, and eventually led him to become a pilgrimage leader himself.

Along the way came unexpected invitations, lessons in trust, new friendships, and a few discoveries.

The pilgrim journey continues for all of us when we return home, “carrying with us the people we encountered, the lessons we received, and a renewed awareness of how God’s presence in our lives.”
