BREAKING: Pope Francis Dies at 88, Ending a Transformative Papacy
Vatican City โ Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and its first leader from Latin America, passed away on Monday morning, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. The Vatican announced that he died at 7:35 AM in his residence at Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936, Pope Francis was elected to the papacy on March 13, 2013. His 12-year tenure was marked by efforts to reform and modernize the Church, emphasizing compassion, inclusivity, and outreach to the marginalized. Notably, he was the first Jesuit pope. Pope Francis had been battling health issues in recent months, including a hospitalization in February for bronchitis that developed into bilateral pneumonia. Despite medical interventions, his condition worsened, leading to his passing.
Cardinal Kevin Farrel, the Vatican camerlengo, announced the Pope's death, stating, "At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of the Church."
Pope Francis's papacy was characterized by a focus on social justice, environmental issues, and a more pastoral approach to Church teachings. His leadership style and reforms often sparked both admiration and debate within the global Catholic community.
The Vatican has initiated the traditional procedures following a pope's death, including preparations for the funeral and the convening of a conclave to elect his successor. Further details will be released in the coming days.
