On Sunday we hear John’s gospel telling us about the Wedding Feast at Cana. The wine runs out and Jesus performs his first miracle by changing water into plenty of the best wine, so that the celebrations can continue. God’s grace came to the family at the wedding feast, and it comes to all of us, and it comes in abundance, when events challenge us and we are unsure what to do.

This Sunday is the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, and it is the Gospel of Luke version that tells us the story of this event in Jesus’ life. It is also the opportunity for all those who have been baptised to renew our baptismal vows. You may remember your baptism, when and where it took place or if you were baptised as a baby, you may rely on what your parents or others who were present at your baptism. This important day in each of our lives was noy purely an event. It was and is only a beginning. The start of our lives as Christians and our journey to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Happy New Year. It’s 2025 and we know we’re looking for something, that aha moment – that epiphany! This Sunday is the Feast of the Epiphany. The realisation of the Magi that what they were looking for was the star. That was their focus and the beginning of their journey to meet the Son of God. This is the journey we all will make throughout our lives drawing closer to God.

The gospel reading for Sunday tells us about the 12-year-old Jesus visiting the temple at Passover with his parents. When Mary discovers that Jesus is not with the group his parents were travelling with, I’m sure she panicked. She and Joseph searched for three days before they found their son. As parents and carers of children we know that we need to guide them to help and nurture the as they grow up. Joseph and Mary were no different. Jesus tells them that he was not lost and that he was in his Father’s house. His parents were mystified. Jesus has grown up physically, mentally and spiritually. He knows who he is, the Messiah.

Sunday at St Nicholas we celebrate fourth Sunday of Advent, when we light the third purple candle on the Advent wreath and remember Mary the mother of God who carried Jesus for nine months until his birth in Bethlehem. Mary and her cousin Elizabeth were both pregnant and waited patiently for the day, when their babies would be born. No doubt there was also an element of both fear and excitement for them as they entered into motherhood.

HC service on Sunday at 09.30. Sunday evening at 6.30pm the service of 9 Lessons and Carols.
