Out of our heritage of musical diversity and excellence, Parkway United Church of Christ is pleased to present the 2015-2016 Music That Matters Concert Series. Started in 2014, Music that Matters is a way of bringing community together through music, to connect with soul, with one another, and with projects of mercy and justice in our local community. The Series offers three concerts every season, each one benefiting a community effort close to the heart of our congregation.

Please join us May 21st at 1 pm for Music that Matters featuring performances from Paul & Sally Wingate and Paul Brown & Terri McMurray as well as PDSSN Book Club members. These husband-and-wife teams bring a fun, engaging show packed with traditional songs, instrumentals, and good-humored mostly-true stories. Songs for the May concert will be from the bluegrass and early country music traditions, as well as some original fiddle tunes.

Donations received today will benefit The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC), a program of the Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network. NCBC is committed to promoting literacy and social connection experiences for adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities that encourage friendship and lifelong learning within a community-based setting. A group of 5-8 people with intellectual disabilities, regardless of their reading skills, gather with volunteer facilitators in a local bookstore, coffee shop, or cafe to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour a week.

Music That Matters presents:
The Federico Pivetta Jazz Trio with vocalist, Nishah DiMeo
Sunday, January 29th at 3 pm, Parkway Univted Church of Christ

Trio musician, Federico Pivetta, Matt Kendrick, and John Wilson, are known throughout Winston-Salem and the surrounding area. They perform regularly as a trio and in collaboration with other musicians.

Our featured vocalist, Nishah DiMeo, is known for her unique vocal stylings and almost limitless range with a sound “like …….if Aretha Franklin and Norah Jones had a baby.” She has been recording and performing for over two decades, covering genres from alternative to zydeco – though jazz has slowly become her favorite. In 2014 she was chosen to be the vocalist for the NC Coltrane All-Star Band, which was featured in the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit Meals on Wheels of Senior Services. Our next concert this season will be a “Folk Fest” on May 21st, 1.30 p.m. and will feature Mark and Sally Wingate of Nashville Tennessee, joined by many renowned musicians.

We are excited to have The Burke Singers from Winston-Salem State University open the Music that Matters Concert Series for the 2016-17 season. The Burke Singers are a female a ca****la ensemble founded in 1995 by D'Walla Simmons- Burke, Director of Choirs and Vocal Studies. D'Walla saw a need to add variety, emotion and a sense of political awareness to the choral program and to the city of Winston-Salem.

The songs performed by this women's group display a variety of African-American sacred music and civil rights songs. Many of the pieces performed - in glorious harmony - are selections sung by the world-renowned vocal ensemble, Sweet Honey in the Rock. The styles of music the Burke Singers bring us give the listener an opportunity to hear some familiar songs in a new way.
