Yesterday we started a Bible study on the book of Philippians . This book in the New Testament was written by Paul. Paul used to be known as Saul, the merciless Pharisee who was responsible for killing countless Christians. But after Jesus got ahold of him on the road to Damascus, he was the Lord's most dedicated spokesman and brought so many people to Christ. This is proof anyone can change with Jesus!

On Paul's second missionary journey, he stopped in Philippi to preach about Jesus. The Word took root, and many people believed on Jesus. Anytime the Word of God us fruitful, however, you can guarantee that the devil isn't far behind. Paul was run out of Philippi by people who didn't appreciate what God's people were doing. Afterwards, he was run out of numerous other towns for preaching the gospel, was the target of an assassination plot, was shipwrecked, was almost killed by an angry mob, and was arrested and imprisoned. In jail is where Paul writes his letter to the Philippians, a book of joy and encouragement.

That just goes to show that we can rise above our struggles and circumstances and still have the real joy that only Jesus Christ can bring. Trust in Jesus!

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Ephesians 6:11 ESV

I love the passage in Ephesians 6:10-20. These are such trying times, and we can feel so weak and helpless in the face of our struggles. These verses let me know that God has resources for me to draw on when I am feeling this way. The armor of God, which should be worn EVERY DAY, consists of truth, righteousness, readiness, faith, and salvation. Our weapons are the Word of God and prayer. The imagery is beautiful and reminds us that these things can and will make us able to stand firm in the battles ahead. Our weapons are powerful, so prayer and the study of the Word of God should be first on our to do list every day.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed and helpless in situations ahead, read this scripture. Put your armor on and use your weapons. God WILL be with you in the days to come.

Have you put your faith and trust in Jesus? Without his armor and his weapons, you are doomed for defeat. Let him take up your battles for you and set you free.

This past Sunday Brother Steve preached on the importance of praying in Jesus' name. One reason is because He is the only one that can actually do something about our problems and can actually understand what we are going through. Hebrews 4:14-16 says:

"Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

Jesus lived as we do here on Earth and can understand anything and everything we go through...heartache, disappointment, physical anguish, fatigue, loss, betrayal, exasperation and the list goes on. There isn't anything that we can bring before Him that He wouldn't understand. Because Jesus can relate to our situations so well, we can "come boldly to the throne of grace," (v16). We don't have to be afraid to tell Jesus anything and everything. He is waiting for you to come to Him with your struggles. In fact, He wants you to! Have you trusted Jesus to be the Savior He wants to be in your life?

Ezekiel 12

In this chapter Ezekiel is acting out messages for the people. Because this people "has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear," (v 2), God is still taking drastic measures to get their attention. Ezekiel is to pack his belongings and dig through the wall at night as if he is going into captivity and trying to escape capture. He is to cover his his face so he can't see what he is doing. When the people ask him what's up, he will tell them that this will happen to them. They WILL go into captivity. In fact, the king that the Babylonians had set up to control Jerusalem named Zedekiah would try to escape this very way, but he would be captured. His nobles and his sons would be killed before his eyes, and then those eyes would be gouged out. He would later die in Babylon. Only a few people would be spared to tell the tale to whoever would listen.

Next Ezekiel was ordered to eat and and drink with trembling and great anxiety. The people in Isreal would soon eat this way because of the coming violence and desolation. Food would be no solace in the coming days of destruction. Ezekiel wanted to show the people that the judgement was coming soon. The people had mistakenly assumed that this would happen a long time from now and there was no need to get all worked up. God let them know that this WOULD happen soon, and they WOULD be eating with trembling and anxiety.

Don't we kinda think that we have lots of time to get everything worked out with God and we don't have to deal with it at this very moment? None of us are promised tomorrow, so today is the day to make sure you are right with Jesus. Have you accepted Him as your saviour? If not, don't delay!

Ezekiel 11

Ezekiel is still having his vision where he has been transported to Jerusalem. This chapter will wrap up this vision.

He is at the east gate of the house of the Lord, and 25 men were there. These were tgecelders and princes that had been leading the people away from the Lord. These men kept saying "this city is the caldron, and we are the meat," (v. 3). This implies that just as a caldron holds the meat in the pot and protects it and treasures it, the people are going to protected in their city from the outside danger (Babylon). Boy they were wrong!!

If you recall, Ezekiel was only able to speak when God had a message for him to deliver. In verse 5, Ezekiel is commanded to speak and let the people know that their misplaced security is about to end. The people will fall by the sword and be taken from their safe place to be judged for all deplorable things they had done. During this message a man named Pelatiah actually dies! Wexarent sure if God strikes him dead or if he died fr[m the sheer terror of the message. Either way, this message was serious and got people's attention.

As usual, God delivers a message of hope after the gloom and doom. Even though God will scatter His people, "...I shall be a little sanctuary for them in the countries where they have gone," (v 16). Even though the templevwill be destroyed, the Lord will still be with them wherever they are. This is significant because back then, they didn't have the Holy Spirit indwelling them like we do today. For God to say that He will travel to wherever they are, the people will know how important they are to Him. We know how this feels today because God meets us wherever we are to be with us! The people's hearts will be changed and follow the Lord wholeheartedly while the evildoers will get what is coming to them. Ezekiel is then taken back to the refugee camp where he shares the vision with the people in captivity.

Ezekiel 10

The 4 creatures, or cherubim, from chapter 1 reappear (please see the description of the creatures in chapter 1). The creatures are standing in the temple with the glory of the Lord. In verse 18, it says, "Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim." This is the most terrible thing to me. The spirit of God left the temple and left the people. The people wanted to be without God, and now they got what they asked for. They thought it was bad before...things were about to get real.

Sometimes today people think they know what they want. This may not, however, be what they need. Sometimes God goes ahead and gives us what we ask for just to prove to us that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Life without God is NEVER a good thing, but sometimes people have to learn things the hard way.

Sorry I haven't posted for a while! We have had church the last two Sundays and I failed to put our Ezekiel study online. I am going to go back and pick up where we left off.

Ezekiel 9

If you recall from our study in chapter 8, the people of Isreal were called out for worshipping other gods...even in the temple! Needless to say, God is furious. In this chapter, Ezekiel is still having his vision of Jerusalem. Six angels appear with battle axes in hand. These are agents of God's punishment. Another angel appears dressed in linen and holding an inkhorn. This angel was to put a mark on every person that was upset about the deplorable spiritual state of the people. The other 6 angels are ordered to kill all the people who do not have the mark without pity, starting with the elders...young and old, men and women, even children. The angels were to defile the temple by piling the dead bodies in it.

Ezekiel is understandably distraught by this vision. He asks God if He will destroy everyone! God explains that the people have blamed the state of the land on God's absence instead of their own misdeeds. The people claimed that God did not see anymore, insinuating they could do whatever they wanted. The people were now going to be reaping what they sowed.

This sounds so cruel, but remember that God has told the people what would happen if they strayed from the Lord for HUNDREDS of years. They had plenty of warnings and decided to ignore them. Actions will always have consequences. Make sure you have heeded God's warnings and haven't dismissed them!!

Ezekiel 8

Ezekiel is in his house with the elders of Judah. Elders were older men of the community that formed a sort of governing body and were in charge of making major decisions for the community. Even though the Israelites had a king, the elders still functioned as a council. After doing some studying, it appears the vision of this chapter actually takes place while Ezekiel is laying on his side for 430 days that symbolized all the years of iniquity in Is real and Judah (chapter 4). So apparently Ezekiel had gotten some attention while He was laying in his house all that time with his face set against the model of Jerusalem!

In his vision, the person he had encountered in chapter one with the fiery presence and brightness all around takes him to Jerusalem. Ezekiel mentions seeing an "image of jealousy" when asked what he sees. This is an idol the people of Isreal had erected in the city, possibly in the temple itself. This was in plain opposition to God. God tells him that this is what has driven Him " far away from My sanctuary," (v 6).

Next God asks Ezekiel to dig into a hole in a wall. When he digs, he comes to a door. After going through the door, 70 elders and the priest are worshipping idols and beasts by burning incense to them in their own homes. These are the leaders of the community doing these things! These are the people that are supposed to be spiritual guides to Isreal. "For they say, 'The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land," (v 12). They take God's silence to be apathy toward their actions. Boy were they ever wrong!

Finally, Ezekiel sees women in the house of the Lord worshipping a God of fertility and rain. Men were also in the house of the Lord worshipping the sun. God is hurt and infuriated that his people would be so blatant in their disregard for Him. The people are worshipping God's own creation, the sun, and giving credit for the rain and fertile soil to someone else. The people did not resemble God's people anymore. Leaders as well as common people worshipped satan in their homes and in the church. And this was satan worship. If you are not worshipping God, you are worshipping satan.

When nations turn away from God, the people will "have filled the land with violence," (v 17). God brings peace and order to a nation. When nations seem to be filled with violence, you can bet that God has been pushed out. What is happening in our nation today is a direct effect of God being pushed out. Pray that our nation becomes one nation under God again!
