Ezekiel 8
Ezekiel is in his house with the elders of Judah. Elders were older men of the community that formed a sort of governing body and were in charge of making major decisions for the community. Even though the Israelites had a king, the elders still functioned as a council. After doing some studying, it appears the vision of this chapter actually takes place while Ezekiel is laying on his side for 430 days that symbolized all the years of iniquity in Is real and Judah (chapter 4). So apparently Ezekiel had gotten some attention while He was laying in his house all that time with his face set against the model of Jerusalem!
In his vision, the person he had encountered in chapter one with the fiery presence and brightness all around takes him to Jerusalem. Ezekiel mentions seeing an "image of jealousy" when asked what he sees. This is an idol the people of Isreal had erected in the city, possibly in the temple itself. This was in plain opposition to God. God tells him that this is what has driven Him " far away from My sanctuary," (v 6).
Next God asks Ezekiel to dig into a hole in a wall. When he digs, he comes to a door. After going through the door, 70 elders and the priest are worshipping idols and beasts by burning incense to them in their own homes. These are the leaders of the community doing these things! These are the people that are supposed to be spiritual guides to Isreal. "For they say, 'The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land," (v 12). They take God's silence to be apathy toward their actions. Boy were they ever wrong!
Finally, Ezekiel sees women in the house of the Lord worshipping a God of fertility and rain. Men were also in the house of the Lord worshipping the sun. God is hurt and infuriated that his people would be so blatant in their disregard for Him. The people are worshipping God's own creation, the sun, and giving credit for the rain and fertile soil to someone else. The people did not resemble God's people anymore. Leaders as well as common people worshipped satan in their homes and in the church. And this was satan worship. If you are not worshipping God, you are worshipping satan.
When nations turn away from God, the people will "have filled the land with violence," (v 17). God brings peace and order to a nation. When nations seem to be filled with violence, you can bet that God has been pushed out. What is happening in our nation today is a direct effect of God being pushed out. Pray that our nation becomes one nation under God again!
