The storm is hours away from us; sometime tonight, the wintry weather will begin. In advance of this, the City of Wilmington has declared a State of Emergency and restricted non-emergency travel. With that and the amount of anticipated snow, the streets and sidewalks of our churches will not be plowed or treated so that we are able to have public Masses. Accordingly, there will be no public Masses at any of our Downtown Catholic churches on Sunday, January 25th. (I will fulfill the intentions for those Masses when I am on my retreat next week.) I will send out a message on Monday morning, if our daily schedule is affected.

So, inasmuch as we are unable to attend Mass, the obligation to attend Mass no longer binds us. But, those persons who are unable to attend Mass still have the obligation to keep the Lord’s Day holy in some other way. They may wish to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, read the readings of the day (English or Latin), pray a family rosary, or perhaps watch a Mass online. These options usually do not satisfy our normal Sunday obligation, because Mass attendance in person is what church law stipulates. However, when one is homebound (because of weather, illness, or caring for someone who is ill), then those other options allow us to still satisfy the third commandment of the Decalogue: “Keep holy the Lord’s day.”

We live-streamed the cathedral's 4pm Mass, so you can check that out when you're snowed in on Sunday morning.

We are currently monitoring the expected winter storm this weekend. Any decision regarding our scheduled Masses and other parish events will be communicated on our parish website, our page, and by FlockNote. We expect to make a decision for Sunday Masses on Saturday evening, around 6 pm. Please be sure to check back then, or join us at our Saturday night Mass at 4pm.
