From "Back to the Bible"
A State of Emergency - June 2

Read

Romans 10:14-15

How then will they call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of Whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Reflect

Why should believers have a sense of urgency when it comes to sharing the Gospel?

The Gotquestions.org podcast (episode 203) once welcomed evangelist Ray Comfort as a guest. In this episode, Ray explained what he thinks is missing from modern evangelism, and that is a sense of urgency.

Ray said, “...when there’s an ambulance or any emergency vehicle comes along the street, all the cars by law have to pull over to let them pass. Why? Because someone’s life could be at stake. Well, evangelism is an emergency vehicle, and everything within the church should pull over to let it through, to let it have its way because people’s lives are at stake.”

We often forget that, don’t we? We tend to act like we have all the time in the world to eventually get around to sharing our faith with someone we know is lost without the Lord. But James 4:14 serves as a wake-up call, reminding us that “...you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”

The harsh reality is that everyone is going to die, and no one knows exactly when their time will come. If they die without trusting in the Lord for their salvation, they will spend eternity in hell, separated from Him.

But we know the solution to the problem of hell — Jesus Christ! And yet, so often, we fail to share this Good News that has the power to grant everlasting life with Him!

In Romans 9 and 10, the apostle Paul was explaining that Israel, God’s chosen people, had rejected the Messiah that had been promised to them. In Romans 10:1, Paul expressed his heartfelt desire that they may be saved. A few verses later, we come across today’s passage, Romans 10:14-15, in which Paul asks some pretty important rhetorical questions. He wanted Israel to be saved, but how could they be saved unless someone presented the Gospel to them?

Now, in context, Paul was speaking specifically about Israel and wanting Jews to be saved. But his rhetorical questions can apply universally. How will anyone put their faith in Christ unless the Gospel is clearly communicated to them?

Dr. Warren Wiersbe explained: “We must never minimize the missionary outreach of the church. While this passage relates primarily to Israel, it applies to all lost souls around the world. They cannot be saved unless they call on the Lord Jesus Christ. But they cannot call unless they believe. Faith comes by hearing, so they must hear the message. How will they hear? A messenger must go to them with the message. But this means that God must call the messenger, and the messenger must be sent. What a privilege it is to be one of His messengers and have beautiful feet!” (The Wiersbe Bible Commentary, New Testament).

Here in the US, we think of emergency workers as heroes, and rightly so! There are few things more inspirational than witnessing a precious life being snatched from a fire, pulled from the wreckage, or resuscitated. And yet, all of these people, though saved once, will surely die one day. Who can save them from that?

Only Jesus can! And we have the immense honor of being able to carry that beautiful message to them. But we can’t forget that we are in a state of spiritual emergency. People’s eternal lives are at stake! How will they be saved unless we proclaim the Gospel?

Respond

Lord, I confess that sometimes I fail to remember the urgency of the Gospel message. Help me to remember that people’s eternal souls are at stake. Nudge me and urge me with Your Holy Spirit to be quick to share the Good News. May I have beautiful feet, Lord. Amen.

Reveal

Most of us have someone we think about when we read “...my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved” (Romans 10:1). Today, don’t only pray for them. Share the Gospel with them!

We often think of snakes as symbols of danger and evil—and in Scripture, the serpent is indeed tied to sin and the fall. Yet in the wilderness, God did something unexpected.

When the people of Israel sinned and were bitten by venomous serpents, they cried out to Moses. God instructed him to make a bronze serpent and lift it on a pole. Anyone who was bitten could look at it and live.

At first glance, it sounds unusual—why use the image of the very thing causing death? But God was teaching something deeper: healing would come not by human effort, but by faith in what He provided.

Years later, Jesus Himself revealed the meaning of this moment. He said, “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him” (John 3:14–15).

The bronze serpent was never the source of healing, it was a sign pointing forward. A shadow of what was to come. Just as those who looked upon it in faith were saved from physical death, so all who look to Christ in faith are saved from spiritual death.

Because on the cross, Jesus took what we deserved. “He who knew no sin became sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The One lifted up on Calvary became the answer to the curse we were under.

What once symbolized judgment in the wilderness became a picture of redemption fulfilled in Christ. From Genesis to the cross, God has always been pointing us to one truth: salvation is found in Him alone. 🤍🙏🏻

Hiding the Word
June 2, 2026

Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.
(Psalm 119:11)

{Recommended Reading: Colossians 3:16-17}

It is estimated that around three hundred direct quotations from the Old Testament appear in the New Testament. References and allusions bring that number closer to one thousand. We often take for granted how often the New Testament writers incorporate a quotation or reference from the Old Testament — especially in their conversations where they appear to be quoting from memory. And we have to remember that they had no computers or complete copies of the Old Testament to work with when writing the New Testament.

Jesus appears to quote the Old Testament around 75 times in His teachings and verbal exchanges with others. Take, for example, His exchange with the devil during His 40-day sojourn in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Three times, He refuted the devil’s temptations by quoting verses from Deuteronomy. Paul quotes or alludes to the Old Testament around 75 times just in the book of Romans. How did they do this? Memorization and in-depth familiarity with Scripture.

Consider setting a goal of memorizing one verse or passage of Scripture each week. After all, the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) and the foundation of faith (Romans 10:17).

Memorization is the first step to meditation.

The Great Commission - June 1

Read

Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Reflect

According to today’s passage, what mission did Jesus give believers? Is that something you are actively participating in?

Back in 2018, Barna Research Group conducted a study about Christians engaging in outreach and evangelism. Then, they compared their findings to a previous study done in 1993. In 1993, 89% of US Christians surveyed agreed with this statement: “Every Christian has the responsibility to share their faith.” But in 2018, only 64% of US Christians agreed. That’s a 25-point drop in 25 years.

More recently, Barna published research in 2022 in which 56% of US Christians said that their spiritual life is entirely private. When asked about barriers to sharing their faith, 24% of US Christians said that no one had suggested discipleship to them, and 22% had simply never thought about it.

That is really interesting because when we read today’s passage of Scripture, we see that Jesus Himself told us to make disciples. This is often referred to as “The Great Commission.” According to the dictionary, commission is “an instruction, command, or duty given to a person or group of people.”

In other words, Jesus wasn’t simply suggesting that we make disciples. He commanded it. It was an imperative statement: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” That is our mission! Those are our marching orders from our Commander in Chief!

Jesus gave us this commission after His resurrection, right before He ascended into heaven. In his Gospel account, Mark also recorded the Great Commission: “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned’” (Mark 16:15-16). Mark records that after Jesus gave this command, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. The Great Commission is Jesus’ last recorded words to His disciples — His final instructions!

Thankfully, in today’s passage, Jesus told us how to make disciples. First, we are to go. We are supposed to be out in the world, interacting with people. Some of us make disciples out in our own communities, but other believers are called to travel around the world. Second, we are to baptize believers in the name of the Triune God. Finally, we are to teach everything that Jesus taught.

Mark’s account of the Great Commission helps us with what we are supposed to say. We are to proclaim the Gospel to all of creation. That means we are supposed to tell the whole world the Good News, which is most simply put by John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

You see, outreach and evangelism aren’t optional. As the Barna survey put it, “Every Christian has the responsibility to share their faith.” As followers of Christ, it’s our most important job. It’s our Great Commission.

Respond

Lord, I want to faithfully obey all of Your commands. I especially want to fulfill my duty to proclaim the Gospel to everyone who will listen. Please give me the wisdom and courage to do my most important job. Amen.
