Matthew 27:62-66 (CSB)
62 The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, "Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive he said, 'After three days I will rise again.' 64 "So give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come, steal him, and tell the people, 'He has been raised from the dead,' and the last deception will be worse than the first." 65 "Take guards," Pilate told them. "Go and make it as secure as you know how." 66 They went and secured the tomb by setting a seal on the stone and placing the guards.

After Jesus’ body was placed in the tomb for His burial, those who wanted Him dead still tried everything in their power to ensure Jesus didn’t do what He said He would do. Just imagine you are one of Jesus’ followers and it’s the day after He died. There’s not much provided in the Bible on what the disciples and the women who followed Jesus did on the day before His resurrection. We do know the disciples ran away in fear when Jesus was betrayed. What do you think was going through their thoughts as they sat waiting?
I know in my life, there have been times of waiting. Waiting for God to do something. God, are you going to come through for me? Should I keep praying this seemingly pointless prayer? I’ve prayed this a thousand times! Those three days must have seemed like an eternity.
And the accusations. The purpose of the guards at the tomb was to ensure no one came to steal the body. So now, the town is wondering and waiting to see what conspiracies will come from all of this. Rumors are spreading, causing everyone to be suspicious and could even further affect the lives of the disciples. Have you ever been accused of something you didn’t do? People just don’t understand to full knowledge of what’s going on. God, what is your plan? How are you going to make all this right?
We don’t have to wonder what happened next in the story, but I wanted to take the time to ruminate on some of the above thoughts. If you ever find yourself in a place where you don’t have a clue what’s going on, lean harder into God’s promises. The disciples were scared for their lives, but all they had to do was just wait for Jesus to rise from the dead. They just had to endure the pain of uncertainty for a little while longer.
What are some promises that you need to lean into? Share in the comments what life experiences you have had that demonstrated to you that God keeps his promises and what Bible verses you clung to for encouragement.
Happy Holy Saturday.
