In 2013, after the huge success of the movie Gravity, George Clooney decided to do something unforgettable for the people who had stood by him for many years. He invited 14 of his closest friends, a group they called "The Boys," to his home for dinner.
During the evening, Clooney thanked his friends for always being there for him through good times and bad. Then he surprised everyone by giving each friend a designer suitcase. Inside every suitcase was $1 million in cash. He also paid the taxes on the gift so they would receive the full amount without worrying about extra costs.
Longtime friend Rande Ge**er later shared what happened that night. He remembered Clooney telling the group, "Listen, I want you guys to know how much you've meant to me... I want you all to open your suitcases." After they saw the money, Clooney smiled and reassured them, "you don't have to worry about paying your mortgage."
Years later, in a 2020 interview with GQ, Clooney explained why he made such a generous decision. He said, "I thought, 'what I do have are these guys who've all, over a period of 35 years, helped me in one way or another. I've slept on their couches when I was broke. They loaned me money when I was broke.'"
He then shared the thought that inspired him to act while he had the chance. Clooney added, "I thought, basically, if I get hit by a bus, they're all in the will. So why the f*ck am I waiting to get hit by a bus?" His gift was his way of thanking the friends who never left his side.
