🙏 Powerful leadership announced for our Sending Worship Service! 🙏

We're thrilled to share the leaders for Wednesday's Sending Worship at Gathering at the Gate, September 17, 3:00 PM.

📖 Preaching: Rev. Alejandro Mejia President of the Asociación de Ministerios Latinos (Latino Ministries Association of the ELCA) and assistant to the bishop and director for evangelical mission of the Delaware-Maryland Synod. Born and raised in Colombia, Pastor Alejandro has been a chaplain at Johns Hopkins, mission developer in South Carolina, and part of vital ELCA initiatives including the Latino Strategy, Glocal Musicians, Youth Gathering, and Rostered Ministers Gathering.

⛪ Presiding: Bishop-elect Rev. Philip Hirsch Metro DC Synod bishop-elect and executive director of the ELCA Christian Community and Leadership unit since 2019. Previously served as director for evangelical mission with the Metro DC Synod (2009-2019) and pastor of congregations in Fairfax, Virginia, and Camden, New Jersey.

What an inspiring way to be sent forth into sustained ministry and advocacy! These leaders bring deep experience in mission, justice work, and building the beloved community.

The Sending Service will be at Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 East Capitol Street, Washington, DC.

You are invited to a time of worship, advocacy training, visits to Congress about Medicaid and SNAP cuts, and building a sustained movement for justice.

You are invited to stand at the "gate" of Washington, D.C., where harmful decisions are being made that deeply impact the lives of our neighbors in Christ.

You are invited to gather on September 16-17 either in-person in D.C. or online.

You are invited into this space where some claim law and order is required, yet we come proclaiming the words of our Lord, “Peace be with you.”

You are invited to experience this movement to deepen relationships, name what is broken, and discern a shared call to action.

We're thrilled to share that the opening worship on Tuesday, September 16 will feature two incredible leaders:

🙏 Presiding Minister: Pastor Andrea Walker of St. Paul Lutheran Church, DC (one of the Gathering's host congregations). Pastor Andrea brings a global perspective from her work as ELCA Global Mission area director for Madagascar and West and Central Africa, with a heart for justice and lifting women's stories.

📖 Preaching: Pastor Heidi Neumark of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kingston, NY. Pastor Heidi previously served at Trinity in Manhattan (where she helped open a shelter for LGBTQ+ youth) and Transfiguration/Transfiguración in the Bronx (where she co-founded South Bronx Churches). She's the author of Sanctuary: Being Christian in the Wake of Trump and her ministry has built homes, schools, and hope in communities pushing back against injustice.

What a powerful way to begin our time "establishing justice in the gate!"
