Hebrews 13:2 reminds us, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

Sometimes the most beautiful moments begin with a simple welcome, a smile, a seat at the table, an open door. We never truly know who God is sending our way, but we do know that kindness is never wasted.

May we always have hearts big enough to receive the stranger, because in doing so, we might just be entertaining angels. ✨

On Tuesday, February 10, National United Methodist Church had the honor of welcoming the Venerable monks of Dhammacetiya as they arrived in Washington, DC, nearing the end of their 2,300-mile Walk for Peace. 🌿

Rev. Bryant Oskvig and Bishop LaTrelle Easterling greeted the monks on the church steps, offering flowers and words of peace as each monk entered the sanctuary. Rev. Oskvig noted that it was a privilege to open the church’s space in hospitality and reverence for the monks’ sacred journey.

The monks received their meal in silence—an expression of mindfulness and devotion—before continuing the final steps of their pilgrimage to Washington National Cathedral for an interfaith gathering.

In their remarks at the National Cathedral, the Venerable monks shared, “A sanctuary is not opened by one person alone; it opens only when the whole community shares the same generosity.”

National UMC extends deep gratitude to the volunteers and staff who shoveled ice, assisted with parking, and guided visitors through the building. Their care and attentiveness reflected the profound generosity and deep compassion of the community.

The church was honored to host the monks on the 108th day of their Walk for Peace, along with members of the local Buddhist community for lunch. National UMC celebrates and supports all who advocate for compassion, peace, and understanding across faith traditions.

May this pilgrimage continue to inspire nonviolence, generosity, and peace in all. 🕊️

“Seek peace and pursue it.” This week, we didn’t just talk about peace, we walked with it. Hosting the Buddhist Monks for lunch at National United Methodist Church was a reminder that unity doesn’t require us to be the same; it just requires us to be present.

Our hearts are overflowing. To our volunteers, church community, neighbors, & staff: you were the hands and feet of love today. Thank you for showing us what it means to truly open our doors.

This Sunday, February 1, we'll gather for 9 am Sunday School classes, both in-person and hybrid. Our 10 am worship service will be held in-person at Metropolitan Memorial and live-streamed online. Please use caution in the parking lots due to ice and snow. The hybrid Questions of Faith class and in-person new members orientation will proceed as scheduled. Due to weather conditions, we're canceling in-person worship and More Than Coffee Hour at the Wesley building. Let's come together in prayer during this challenging time.

The Metropolitan Singers are honored to present
Saint-Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio during the 10 am worship service on December 21, at Metropolitan Memorial Campus featuring the beautiful artistry of the Leesburg String Quintet and harp.

This timeless work lifts our hearts toward the miracle of the Incarnation, reminding us that God stepped into our world with tenderness and glory.

Through Saint-Saëns’ radiant harmonies, we experience the truth that worship is both proclamation and praise, and our choir is grateful to offer its gifts in response to the psalmist’s call to “sing unto the Lord a new song.” The beauty of this sacred music deepens our Advent journey, preparing our spirits to receive the hope, peace, joy, and love that Christ brings. By sharing this oratorio, our music ministry joins generations of believers who have used sacred art to illuminate God’s redeeming love.

We warmly invite you to join us in person or online for this extraordinary musical celebration of the birth of Christ. 🎶🎼✨
