Memorial Day Prayer

Spirit of Life
whom we have called by many names
in thanksgiving and in anguish—

Bless the poets and those who mourn
Send peace for the soldiers who did not make the wars
but whose lives were consumed by them

Let strong trees grow above graves far from home
Breathe through the arms of their branches
The earth will swallow your tears while the dead sing
“No more, never again, remember me.”

For the wounded ones, and those who received them back,
let there be someone ready when the memories come
when the scars pull and the buried metal moves
and forgiveness for those of us who were not there
for our ignorance.

And in us, veterans in a forest of a thousand fallen
promises,
let new leaves of protest grow on our stumps.

Give us courage to answer the cry of humanity’s pain
And with our bare hands, out of full hearts,
with all our intelligence
let us create the peace.

The I Am UU Project is not run by the UUA. We are not sponsored by a UU congregation. We are not part of the General Assembly and do not have any authority within the governance of Unitarian Universalism.

This is not the place to air your grievances with the UUA. We won't host it. Such comments will be "hidden" and people who don't respect this simple guideline will be banned. We hate having to do it, but it is more than a distraction to our mission, which is wider than the scope of the UUA.

We here to make Liberal Religion easier to understand and share. Liberal religion is bigger than Unitarian Universalism, but we believe that Unitarian Universalism is the most accessible and familiar form of Liberal Religion for most North Americans. We also see the UUA as having the stability and respect to ensure that our Values are articulated at the national level.

We also are firmly Q***r affirming, including the spectrum of transgender identities, and Anti-racist and we are not interested in uninformed opinions from people who haven't read an academic paper yet this millennium. You did not "research" anything; you read an opinion piece you agreed with and adopted its talking points. We fully support the UUA in their work for anti-oppression and multiculturalism.

We care deeply about the work of the UUA and its mission, but should the UUA dissolve tomorrow, our work would continue. If you want to change the UUA, you will have to do so from inside of a UUA member congregation. That is not the I Am UU project.

Amid rampant abuse by federal agencies like ICE, Congress can pass laws that allow people to take federal agents to court.

When DACA recipients are targeted, all of us feel it.

Teachers, nurses, parents, and essential workers — people who contribute over $6.4 billion to our economy and power our communities every single day. When USCIS stalls their renewals, families lose income, communities lose neighbors, and all of us lose.

This is not just their fight. It's ours. And when we come together and take action, we win.

Join our Community Call on May 19th to urge Congress to pass the DREAM Act now.

When we all have the freedom to vote, regardless of our race or background, we can build an economy that works for everyone, ensure our neighborhoods are safe, and guarantee our children have a better future.
