The Peacemakers Summit begins TOMORROW! We are excited to spotlight one of our speakers: Jay Brown from Community Shoulders!

Born and raised in Washington DC, Jay Brown of Community Shoulders, learned at an early age that regardless of where you are in life you're an influence on someone, so he strived to make those interactions positive and long lasting. In 1983, Mr. Brown was peer mediator as a crime stopper and in 1991 he was hired to be a youth counselor in multiple locations and facilities. He went to school for Criminal Justice, was a member of the American Red Cross rapid Technology and Mental health assessment team during Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Brown worked 20 years in the mental health field and he is a community liaison and advocate who has learned the importance of empowerment through individual support assessments. He says: "I understand that these events in our communities seem spontaneous but they have a story behind them and if there is a story behind them, they can be prevented, if it's negative- it can be uplifted and its positive. This is my life community investment."

The only way we are going to overcome the violence that we are dealing with both from the police and from each other is if we really learn how to hold each other up and not tear each other down. It's time we see each other as worth fighting for and hold each other up.

With over 600 shootings this year, and dealing with this pandemic, we know it's hard right now. But we are doing this not for ourselves but to keep our babies safe. We are the change that we have been waiting for. Jesus would not be judging someone's child, or blaming or shaming them.. Jesus would be serving, loving, and finding a way to make peace. We can do that, but we've gotta do it together.

This family's loss is all of our loss. Let us gather to grieve with those who grieve and to mourn with those who mourn. Let us come together and call for a world in which guns do not have the final say, but where we can all live in peace.
