“Do this!” “Do that!” “Not good enough!” Legalism kills the Spirit, because all of the laws and codes surrounding holiness are exhausting and impossible. They do a perfect job showing us how flawed we are, because it’s not possible to keep them. Which, according to the Apostle Paul, was exactly what they were supposed to do.

As Paul writes to the Corinthians, he tells them that there is a New Covenant, one not based on following the “letter” of the law, “but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life,” (2 Cor 3:6) and in this Spirit “there is freedom,” (2 Cor 3:17).

Thank You, Jesus, for forgiveness and freedom through the Spirit, because this life is hard enough without having to be perfect!

Now look, this is not a license to sin, we are called to pursue holiness, to be like Jesus. But if we mess up, we can rest in His grace. So this is a relationship based on pleasing Jesus out of love for all that He has done for us (giving His life for ours on the cross and giving us His Spirit), and not out of fear of discipline (lightning bolts from the sky every time we mess up).

***A Prayer: Lord, Thank You for Your grace, for loving me just as I am. Help me to strive to be holy out of my love and gratefulness for You and not to “look good” to others. Heal me from perfectionism and the perfectionism of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Church stuff can hurt. We can grow so close to our brothers and sisters in Christ that when relationship issues happen (and they will) the fall-out can be very painful.

The early church experienced this same pain, and the Apostle Paul writes about it in 2 Corinthians 2, saying, “Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, In Order That Satan Might Not Outwit Us. For we are not unaware of his schemes,” (2 Cor 2:10-11).

What’s that? The Devil delights in division.

Sweeping things under the rug, acting polite but stewing underneath, all of this plays into the Devil’s plan. It leads to resentment and bitterness. Sharing our feelings, admitting our hurt, and forgiving those that disappoint us leads to reconciliation and deeper Agape love, which is the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

Look, things don’t always go the way we like, words are said, deeds are done. Forgiveness doesn’t necessarily mean things go back to the way they were. It means that we place things in God’s hands and trust Him to help us sort it out.

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for modeling forgiveness and love for me. Reveal to me who I need to forgive and create a path forward for that, even if it is just something that happens between You and me. Heal me from the hurt of this broken relationship, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

There have been some struggles in my life that were really hard, but being able to help others with the same or similar struggles has been a blessing to them and me. Are you open to letting God use your life to encourage and strengthen others?

Someone who went through A LOT for the sake of Christ was the Apostle Paul, and he shared saying, “Praise be to the … Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God,” (2 Cor 1:3-4).

God has designed us to both receive care and comfort from God and to then share that with others. It’s His plan and purpose for your life that you would help others out with the same help that you have received. This is why it becomes a blessing to give of yourself (not just your stuff) in this way.

So, are you hurting and in need of healing today? Go to God! He wants to help you through, because He loves you and because He has a plan to use your life to help others too.

Are you healed or on the path to healing? Share that! Be open to reaching out and helping a fellow traveler along. It’s how God can use your life for His glory!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for the comfort and hope you have promised and given to me. I give You my life. Please use it to help and encourage others. Praise Your name, Father! For You are indeed a God of compassion! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I’m a planner. I’ve got short term plans for today and long term plans for 5 years from now. I set my face towards those plans and plow ahead. The only problem is that sometimes my plans aren’t God’s plans, haha, so I’ve had to learn to pray first and also to be flexible!

The Apostle Paul is closing his first letter to the Corinthians when he says that he’d like to come make a lengthy visit, “if the Lord permits,” (1 Cor 16:7). We always need to allow for the fact that God might have a better plan!

I’m not sure about you, but these last few years I have had to change plans – Plan A – Plan B – Plan Z – you get the idea. I want to assure you today that God is in this mixed up world with you!

God’s not surprised or taken off guard, He’s been aware of everything that has happened and will happen. In fact, according to Paul, God has “permitted” or “allowed” these things to happen, good and bad. He is not the author of pain, death, and evil, but for a time it is allowed to exist on this earth.

Jesus knows what it’s like to suffer too, they tortured and killed Him. BUT REMEMBER, Jesus rose from the grave Victorious!

Your Victory may take some time, coming in this life or the next, but be assured of this . . . Victory is coming! Our God is in charge. He loves You and He wins!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for sharing Your victory with me. Take my eyes off of my problems and help me to refocus on You. Increase my faith when I falter. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Many years ago my pastor, Stephen, said this in a sermon, and of all of the things he preached, this struck my heart. You become who you hang out with.

So, who do you aspire to become?

Are your aspirations centered around a career? Hang out with people who are there or getting there. (Why do you expect people who don’t value education to encourage you to get one?)

Do you want to grow in your faith—to have self-control, peace, and joy—hang out with people who have that. (If you want to get sober, hang out with people who support sobriety.)

I think that this applies to what we are watching and reading as well. Garbage in—garbage out. Good stuff in—good stuff out. (If you listen to weird stuff, don’t be surprised when you start believing weird stuff!)

If you are someone who wants positive change in your life, are there any tough decisions that you need to make? (You can do it! Christ is with you!)

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for offering me positive, transformative change. Help me to see who and what is healthy for me and who and what is not. Open a door for me to be who You are calling me to be, and give me the strength and courage to walk through it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Are you keeping first things first? Christians often hotly debate current issues happening both inside and outside of the church; however, the Apostle Paul urges us to refocus on *the* most important Christian issue.

So, what is most central to the Christian faith? That you Believe that the Scriptures of the Old Testament (the Hebrew Bible) prophesied about Jesus as the Christ (Messiah); that He died for our sins, was buried, and resurrected on the 3rd day; and that He appeared to the disciples and more than 500 others. These points are what is of utmost importance (1 Cor 15:3-8).

I think that the message of Christ crucified for our sins can become “mundane,” so everyday and ordinary (“Of course I believe in that, but let’s talk about this…”), that we stop pondering and focusing on it. However, *this* is what should be central and first in our faith practice, our preaching, and our lives. If so, then it will inform and guide how we think about baptism, marriage, and calling.

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I believe that You are the resurrected Messiah. I confess that You are my Lord and Savior. Forgive me for focusing on other things first, help this truth to be the foundation upon which I build my thoughts and life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Bring your friends to church! What if church isn’t just about your personal experience but a witness to *guests* of God’s reality?

In 1 Cor 14, the Apostle Paul is setting the Corinthian church straight on a few things—and one has to do with the people we invite.

Paul says to serve God in an orderly way, where everyone’s gifts have a chance to shine, and with a prophetic voice, so that your guests (which presumes we are each inviting new people) “...will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, ‘God is really among you!’” (1 Cor 14:25).

Eeeek!!!! Am I personally bringing new people to church???? When was the last time I brought a guest to church? Aside from the important point that church should be a space where everyone gets to use their gifts and the prioritizing of the prophetic voice of God, are we inviting new people?

Let’s get started church! Let’s do what the Apostle Paul says and make certain that church is a space where, “Everything must be done so that the church [the people of God and future people of God] may be built up,” (1 Cor 14:26).

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You that someone took me to church. Put someone on my heart that I can share Your love and hope with and give me the opportunity and courage to invite them to go with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

When I was a little girl, it was just me and my mom and we did not always have a lot of money. Sometimes friends and family shared a bag of clothes their daughter had outgrown or gave us a bag of groceries. I was super excited when they did, haha! New stuff!

Likewise, God wants Christians to take care of one another. The world will always need your love and care, but so do your brothers and sisters in Christ.

In 1 Corinthians 14:1-20, Paul wants us to focus on the upbuilding, encouraging, and comforting of the church (not the building, but the people). Change happens, hurt happens, but these are our eternal friends. How can we bless them?

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for the family that I have in Christ. Reveal to me how I can strengthen and encourage Your people. Help me to be transparent and authentic with my spiritual family so that they can bless me too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
