“The God of Glory”

Who is this GOD of GLORY? He is the God who thunders over the waters of creation, burned in a bush before Moses, who has written YOU into His Divine story.

The religious leaders accused Stephen of blasphemy in today’s daily Scripture reading, so he set them straight by reminding them of just who the God of GLORY is–the One who didn’t just write an old story of the Patriarchs, but One who is actively working through Jesus and in YOU now!

Today, REMEMBER:

1. You are part of a long, beautiful story. While you may not fully understand the highs and lows of life until you look at it from Heaven, KNOW that YOUR GOD is working all things out for the GOOD!

2. You serve the God of GLORY! He is full of Splendor, Bright, Majestic, and Worthy of All Praise!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for revealing Your Glory to me! Thank You for making me part of Your Glorious story. Guide me on the right path, protect my feet, and help me to trust You. I praise You, Lord! You are worthy of all Honor and Praise! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

It’s okay: to set limits; to say no; to delegate.

You can’t do it all (she says to herself)! In those first days of the church there was too much work for the apostles to do. In the mix, some widows were not getting their food and a complaint arose. Here is what we can learn about time management from the apostles:

1.) Set Limits: They identified what their job was and wasn’t.
2.) Say No: Not even apostles can “do it all”!
3.) Delegate: New ministers were chosen to help the widows.

I’d also like to add that the complaint was around favoritism—one ethnic group of widows was getting their food and another wasn’t. Not only did the apostles practice some self-care by protecting their own lives, but they immediately made certain everyone was cared for equally.

Let’s practice radical Agape love by caring for ourselves while we care for others!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for letting me know that it’s okay to say, “No.” Please give me wisdom on what to do and what to pass on. Teach me how to care for myself while I care for others. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

It was 203 AD in Carthage, North Africa, and a young Christian mother was thrown into a Roman arena because SHE REFUSED TO DENY CHRIST.

Do you need supernatural courage? Read on! … In ancient Rome, the crowds cheered for the deaths of criminals and Christians, placing bets and drinking their wine during the entertainment.

A woman named Perpetua showed no fear. After being gored by a bull, she fixed her ripped dress and pinned her hair back up and encouraged her fellow Christians, saying, “Stand firm in the faith! And all of you love one another and don’t be offended because of our suffering.”

An inexperienced gladiator then came for her, but instead of a death blow, he pierced her bone and she cried out. He hesitated, so she took his sword and put it to her own neck. She was ready to meet her God.

Like the apostles in today’s Bible reading, Perpetua experienced joy in the midst of suffering for Christ.

BUT FRIENDS, it is *not* normal to rejoice during suffering—this was a work of the Holy Spirit in His martyrs. When I read about their joy during suffering it reminds me both of the reality of God’s Spirit and how He never abandons His people.

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for the Christians who have come before us and for their examples of faith. Please take away my fear of what others think about me being a Christian. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so that even if people mock or persecute me I will have a supernatural peace and joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

There are no secrets from God. Ananias and Sapphira tried lying to the apostles, BUT GOD knows and sees all, so that didn’t end so well for them.

Do you have secrets? I want you to know that JESUS knows all of your secrets and LOVES you anyway.

Now Hear Me: When we do wrong there are consequences—but that’s a good thing because justice is important and consequences teach us to not sin again.

If someone has wronged you, it’s okay to name that. This is their sin and shame, not yours. It’s okay, even good, if they have consequences. Find a safe person to talk to and as JESUS tells us: “The truth will set you free!” (Jn 8:32)

If you have done something wrong, I know that there is anxiety and fear over anyone finding out. We worry about what others will think of us, and this worry becomes a type of prison. It just creates more lies, but remember, “The truth will set you free.”

In today’s Bible reading, God’s judgment on Ananias and Sapphira for lying and greed was instant death (!), so there is discipline from God for our wrong doing. However, the message given through the Bible is also one of repentance and forgiveness.

Let us hear this warning from Scripture and live in honesty and integrity!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for consequences. Thank You for loving me enough to not leave me living in my sin. Help me to see areas in my life where I need to repent and change. Show me where I need to ask You and others for forgiveness. Forgive me for lying and help me to not lie again. Heal me. Soften my heart and set me free from secrets. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

The Bible says that Greed is idolatry! How is this? Consider: Greed = Money as god. The reverse would be: Generosity = Faith in God. The first church pitched in all of their stuff together and made certain their own were provided for. This is a radical example of how Christians are to Agape love one another.

For some people generosity comes easily, they are natural sharers. While for others, it is really hard to let go of even small things. So here is a little biblical advice to help you grow like Christ:

1.) PROVIDE for your family (don’t overspend, get in debt)
2.) GIVE 10% of your income as a tithe to God
3.) SHARE! Give that big tip, buy a single mom some groceries, make a meal for a family going through trauma. Trust God to meet your needs.

Jesus gave it ALL for us. He was born into a poor family, raised as a working man, and died with just the robe on His back. BUT JESUS was and is the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. Jesus’ example teaches us that the stuff you have does not reflect your true wealth or worth!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You that You gave it all for me. Help me to be wise with my money, to not overspend or go into debt. When the opportunity arises, also help me to be generous and to share what I do have. Set me free from the love of money and the fear of not having enough. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Relationships, Money, Power, other gods–-you name it–-people will look to *anything* except Jesus for peace, love, and joy. BUT JESUS is the only person and name through which σωθῆναι, we can be “saved.”

“Salvation” or “saved”—what does that mean anyway?

Have you ever needed to be delivered, healed, or rescued? Then you need σωθῆναι! The key here is that it’s written in the “passive” voice, as something someone else does for you. Like when my toddler yelled because her hair was caught in something, she needed σωθῆναι, for me to untangle it for her.

Have you ever gotten in a mess that was too big for you to untangle by yourself?

I have! That’s what Jesus does—He fixes us up and washes us clean from all of our moral mistakes so that we can live in peace, love, and joy in *this* life and then experience that to its fullest in the life to come.

Remember: σωθῆναι isn’t something you do yourself, it’s what Jesus has done and will do for you!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your salvation. Please save my soul and wash me clean so that I can be with You forever, but please also cleanse me and heal me so that I can truly live in this life too. Please heal me from my mistakes and the hurts I have received from others so that I can live now in peace, love, and joy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Was JESUS *just* a servant of God, a suffering Messiah, or a prophet? If so, He would be like any other great (human) leader, BUT JESUS was and *is* so much more–-He is HOLY and RIGHTEOUS, the AUTHOR of LIFE.

We learn about this in Acts 3 through a story about the Apostles Peter and John. After they heal a man, crowds rush to them, but Peter was like–-Hey, don’t focus on us, look to Jesus!

Peter helps the people understand Jesus by describing Him as:
🔸 Servant
🔸 Holy and Righteous One
🔸 Risen
🔸 Author of Life
🔸 Source of Faith
🔸 Suffering Messiah
🔸 Prophet

Today, I want to encourage you to stop and really think about who Jesus is, to let yourself be awed by Him, to encounter Him as HOLY.

I pray that the words of angels will ring through you, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come,” (Rv 4:8).

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your Word, the Apostles’ teachings, and all those who have helped me to understand You. Reveal Yourself to me as my Risen Lord once again. Help me to understand what it means that you are the Author of Life. Increase my faith and breathe new life into me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Need a Second Chance? Read on: Peter had just given the most convicting sermon EVER: He looked out at the crowd that had yelled for Jesus’ crucifixion and said, “YOU put Him to death!” (Ac 2:23) Eeek, they actually had.

BUT PETER doesn’t leave them feeling bad, he says, “BUT GOD raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him,” (Ac 2:24). Amen!!!

The crowd was convicted of their sin, and on that day, from Peter’s call to “Repent and be Baptized,” 3000 people became followers of Jesus.

Have you ever felt convicted by a sermon or from someone calling you out on your stuff? Me too! You know, it’s okay to admit you made a mistake–in fact it’s a good thing. We *all* mess up.

BUT JESUS offers us a path to repentance and new life. Second Chances.

Is there something that you can improve on? An area where you can say, “I’m sorry, I ___” and then ask Jesus to help you make a real change? (I have one in mind for myself right now!)

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for conviction. Thank You for not letting me continue on doing ___. I confess right now that I need to change. Please heal me and help me so that I can. I believe that You can change my life. I believe that through You I can have a second chance. Help my unbelief! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

What if God’s plans for you, the church, and this world, are bigger than you ever imagined?

The first half of Acts 2 is all about God doing the unexpected. It was the Feast of Shavuot and 120 devout Jews–followers of Jesus–were gathered in prayer waiting for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.

Then in one spectacular day, God:

➤ Grew the church from 120 people to 3000 (!)
➤ Filled everyday people with His Spirit (not just the wealthy, Levites, or prophets)
➤ Put new languages in His people’s mouths (“tongues”)
➤ Anointed young & old for ministry (not just men over 30)
➤ Called men & women to speak His truth (not just men)
➤ Saved *all* who called on His name (not just Jews)

Who would have expected that? No one. It was Revolutionary!

People like to talk about *who* God is and *what* He does (or doesn’t do).

BUT JESUS showed us that: God calls people others don’t value; God gives people gifts they don’t expect; God grows His church through unexpected methods.

Our creative Creator loves doing new things!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for not being the God of my own creation. Thank You for being Bigger, and Greater, and more Marvelous than I can even imagine. Help me to not get stuck in my own thoughts about You so that I can see You working creatively all around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Jesus is coming back! But when? And how should this affect your everyday life?

From the first church to the present people have been waiting for the Second Coming of Jesus. People have been *certain* that they knew the date–-but it came and went and here we are.

Friend, I believe that Jesus is coming back, and can I share with you: I Have No Idea When. It could be today, it could be tomorrow, it could be in 500 years.

So, the best that I can do is to LIVE EACH DAY TO ITS FULLEST. I can live in Purity and Love today, so if at any point I saw Jesus I would be *excited* (and not like, “Uh, oh…”).

If there’s a God Dream in your heart–-seminary, missions, writing a book–-GO FOR IT!

None of us knows the day Christ will return and none of us knows the number of our days on earth, but we do have the power to LIVE THIS DAY FOR CHRIST!

***A Prayer: Lord, thank You for letting us know that You will return. Help me to live in peace with that and to enjoy each day. Reveal to me my purpose and give me the strength, means, and courage to live into that. Help me to live this day in purity, love, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
