The reasoning behind an early date for the Gospel of Matthew.

When Were the Gospels Written? When were the gospels written? Decades after the ascension of Christ, later, or actually, earlier? Let’s walk through this together. First thing to understand c…

Some "quick" thoughts on the Apostles' Creed.

I know that there are times when we need to update the language of our faith. However, so often, the updates don’t bring greater clarity or deeper understanding. This is why so many modern tr…

We are called to be like Christ and to give ourselves away the best we can, knowing who’s we are and where we are going. We are called to be filled with the Holy Spirit. If we are honest, we know that the temptations toward list-keeping and cold-heartedness are in all of us. Like Golem we say, “why shouldn’t I keep it?” Look to Christ’s example. Not just that He loved till the end, but the glory with which He has been crowned. Strengthen your week knees and press on to the very end.

I have often said that to love is to give your life away. This is one of the reasons that persistence in the faith is the mark of the believer. Those without the Holy Spirit can love for a time. They can spring like the seeds that took root in the rocky soil. And yet, they have nothing to fill them when they are poured out. They will become self-protective and shrivel up, they will cease to love. When other’s question them they will become defensive always pointing at the things they did in the past. Their left hand will know what their right hand did and they will keep long lists.

Jesus has already sweated drops on blood in the anguish of expectation, asking God to let the cup pass from Him. Now, having set His mind to the task and the glory entailed, He turns to pray for others. He knows who He is and He knows where He is going. He knows He will “no longer be in the world.” He has been their teacher, their guide, and their friend. He knows He is the one who will face the cross, and His prayer is spent on their behalf. He loves them and He demonstrates it to the end by commending them to the Father’s care.

What is Jesus praying for in the opening verses of John 17? He is praying that God would glorify Him “with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” We know that God will say, “yes.” How will the Father do it? It will be with a crown. It will be with a sitting at the right hand of the Father with all the rulers and authorities under His feet. But it comes through the cross. The time for Jesus’ death is at hand, and He knows what is going on. The drops of blood have already been sweated. He knows where glory lies. His eyes are on the prize in submission to the Father’s will.

Pastor Douglas Wilson gave an excellent sermon last week about this. If you have a chance to check it out on Christ Kirk’s YouTube channel it will be rewarding. The short of it is this: we are called to be glory seekers, just like Christ. And just like Christ, it is on the other side of suffering, on the other side of a life spent in love. On the other side of a life poured out in love. First the race and then the prize. First the cross and then the crown.

John‬ ‭17‬:‭1‬-‭7‬, ‭11‬ ‭LSB‬‬

“Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having finished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; And I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.”
