The weapon formed against this whale did not prosper. Sometimes we Believers are moving about with evidence of the attack we had been under. The testimony is that we survived it!…PTL!

A whale surfaced with the 1800s still lodged beneath its skin.

Not a fossil. Not a legend. A living bowhead carrying a weapon older than everyone who found it.

The real detail is colder than the Arctic water.

The harpoon fragment matched a bomb lance design used between 1879 and 1885, meaning the whale may have been struck when steamships still chased giants through ice.

Then it simply kept going.

Bowheads are built for patience. Thick blubber, massive skulls, and slow Arctic lives help them survive where almost everything else negotiates with the cold.

That wound crossed eras.

It passed from whaling boats to satellites, from oil lamps to smartphones, from hunters long buried to scientists staring at proof of absurd endurance.

Some animals escape death.

This one carried the receipt for more than a hundred years.
