Project Story: Hinton Rural Life Center Project, Hayesville, NC. Story submitted by Nomad Jim Keiser

The Hinton Retreat Center has been serving the local community for 60 years. They provide a wide variety of services, which include a firewood ministry and a recently completed Educational Tool Barn.

Our team was tasked with creating a new laundry area in the downstairs of what was the old tool barn. We removed everything from the area, replaced existing movable doors with permanent doors and windows, and installed new plumbing. We also constructed a new fence along the Ponders Porch driveway and completed a portion of the walkway at Ponders.

Several of the team members spent many hours cleaning, staining, and painting all the signage on campus. (74 signs) The team also cleaned and stained a deck and all the seating on the main porch near the Chapel.

The team also demolished a large shed that had been used for storage. (It was also a home for several large bee nests!!!

Thankful for a team of folks with servant hearts.

Hinton is a beautiful place. Being here in the Fall is always a bonus as the seasons change.

To God be the glory!

Week 3 Asheville Disaster Rebuild Report – submitted by Nomads Anne & Max Armstrong

Week Three had us welcoming Les to the team after we said goodbye to Anne, Dale, Cliff, and Ann, leaving us with 5 hard-working NOMADS for this week. Angela and Jake continued to be big assets to our team.

We worked the entire week at Kim and Nick's home. They have been a joy to work with. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Jake and Angela completed the installation of all the flooring and most of the baseboard while the rest of the team worked on drywall and other tasks. On Thursday, we began the installation of the new windows, completing two of them. Since there was very little window casing on site, Jake and Les used what was available to make one example trim setup for the other windows. Les spent some time preparing to lead the team for the next few weeks. He met Jordan, UMC construction coordinator, and Danielle, the construction coordinator for Rebuild Haywood, the county where we are working, and our contacts at the church.

Please thank the DR team with a comment!

Project Story: Lakeshore Camp and Retreat Center, Eva, TN, submitted by Dave & Judy Bufkin.

Nomads Lakeshore Camp and Retreat Center, nestled on the banks of the Tennessee River on Kentucky Lake, provides a special environment. The fall weather set in during our project's on-campus duration. Working alongside the lake offered a peaceful opportunity.

The camp welcomed a new director the week before Nomads' arrival. The consistently helpful maintenance staff is still in place. The camp has also engaged a new cable company to enhance WIFI across the campus, including the campground. Cell service was available in most areas, with at least basic texting capabilities.

As a small yet efficient team, we successfully completed the camp's highest priority, constructing a new platform/step walkway to the beach area. We also built two sets of bunk beds, modifying plans to meet the camp's specifications. Other tasks we assisted with included labeling and stamping 600 letters and repairing damaged decking and steps.

What a great team for a great project! If you own an RV and would like to volunteer at Christian Camps, sign up on our website: www.methodistnomads.org. We welcome Christians of all faiths.

Project Story - Camp Tekoa - Hendersonville, NC. Story submitted by Nomads, Andy & Tom Hogan

3 weeks at Camp Tekoa in 3 words...sawing, sanding, shellacking. Thanks to cool, dry weather in NC apple country, and a crew with the right skills, a whole lot got done.

Bathrooms with shower curtains for privacy? Not any more. The before and after pictures make it look easy. It was not. New walls, ceiling to floor, floors below toilets repaired, a dozen 3/4" plywood doors...knots filled, entire boards sanded smooth, shellacked, and each custom cut, because as we all know, nothing's plumb in old cabins.

Nomads noticed campers struggling to navigate an eroded path down to the gazebo, so they created a water diversion at the top and staggered landings down the slope. All with scrap wood.

Talk about "the right skills"...the camp wanted to replace two outdated vanity counters with wood. Nomads delivered. Painstakingly epoxy-coated to last forever.

And there's more...
*a wall demolition and new framed access to a repurposed laundry room
*a new welcome sign and new benches
*A couple of dozen flood-damaged tiles were removed and replaced in the dining hall
*over 100 custom-cut and sanded shower curtain wall brackets
*rotted deck boards ripped off and replaced

Finally, the 3 best words for the leader..."No injury reports."
Pretty good for a team with an average age of 78!!

Please leave a comment for the Camp Tekoa Team!

Project Story - Period 13 Project at Dandridge First United Methodist Church - submitted by Nomads Tammy & Rodney Ripley

We had a mighty team working at Dandridge First UMC in Dandridge, Tennessee. We parked at the Youth Center across the street from the church, but our work was 100% community outreach. We worked at "Joe's" house in White Pine, Tennessee. Joe is a Veteran with Parkinson's living in a Mobile Home that needed some tender loving care to make it more comfortable for him. The project was entirely funded by "Work Loving God," a local community Outreach organization.

In the three weeks we were there, Joe ate lunch with us every day and joined in our break time. He even invited us to his church for a community dinner our last week there. In his home, we completely renovated his Master Bathroom and Bedroom. We installed Pergo Timbercraft Flooring throughout his entire home. We cleaned, caulked, and glazed all of his windows, along with several other projects.

Our team enjoyed the town of Dandridge. We attended Music on the Town on Thursday evenings, took many walks through the small town, and went to the bridge over Douglas Lake. We visited Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg, close by. One weekend, we took a Luncheon Cruise on the Star of Knoxville. We spent many nights playing games and completed two "Finder Seekers" escape room boxes. Rodney and Tammy joined the church choir for the time we were there.

This church already has a project posted for next year. Please consider this project in your 2026 plans. It is a great church with a big heart for outreach.

Please thank the Dandridge Nomads team with a comment!

Weekly devotion, "Uplifting," by Nomad Hilary Boudreau

In this age of information and artificial intelligence, those of us born in the middle third of the last century may struggle to keep up with the pace of innovation and new norms for finding information, paying bills, making appointments, etc. Some of us prefer to use the phone, write a check, or send and receive via the US mail. Others are keeping up pretty well and are still amazed when AI synthesizes trustworthy sources to help us find answers to research questions in seconds. We manage uploading a document successfully to complete an application, or attaching a photo or recipe to a friend. The simplicity and ease of some of our efforts are not unlike the smooth efficiency of any prayer chain, including our Nomads Sunshine committee outreach for prayers when members are in need.

Recently, I have been appreciating my own prayers and petitions sent and received through “etherspace” through this network of love, where the concepts of “uploading” and “uplifting” come together. It’s really satisfying when I successfully upload a file or photo to share from my computer or phone with little effort. It’s also uplifting to let someone know you’re praying and get tangible replies from whomever is “standing in the need of prayer.” My favorite Sunshine emails are the ones acknowledging the impressive sums of prayers received and their healing effects. In contrast, end-of-life notices are important to be aware of so we can acknowledge life-changing losses and offer comfort. Who among us doesn’t occasionally find ourselves in need of being lifted up by a community of compassionate believers? Romans 8:26-7 assures us, “In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

I know I’m preaching to the choir. My own faith is strengthened by both giving and receiving intercessory prayers. I know there is and has been a cloud of witnesses praying for me, and I feel them. I hope you feel our prayers for you, too. Help us all be part of that cloud of witnesses beaming light and love to each other one email at a time. Thanks be to God for our Nomads cloud of witnesses. May we continue boldly praying for one another and our missions. Amen.

Asheville, NC Disaster Rebuild by Nomads, Anne and Max Armstrong

The NOMADS disaster rebuild project in Asheville, NC, officially began Monday, October 6, 2025. Most of you have probably seen news stories of all the damage that occurred in North Carolina as a result of Hurricane Helene in September of 2024. It was and is worse than we saw on TV. There was more than 14 inches of rain, which caused catastrophic flooding and loss of life. It will take many more years for this part of NC to recover. Hopefully, NOMADS will be able to help with the healing process for some, as we help families move back home.

The first weeks made for great teams, all experienced in DR work. Together, we worshiped at Covenant Community Church, where we were warmly welcomed. We use one of the upstairs rooms of the church for our Sunday afternoon meetings and our morning devotions.

This week, with the addition of Ann and Cliff, we had two Anne’s, one Ann, and one Angela. Sandy named us the “A” team. She liked it because she just needed to remember the guys' names. Anyone who called out for Anne got a lot of responses, or maybe no answer at all. Our work continued this week at Sandy’s house. By Wednesday afternoon, we had completed the walls, ceiling, baseboards, and flooring in both the living room and office. We had also installed baseboards in two other bedrooms. We completed our work for Sandy on Wednesday afternoon and celebrated with her Bible presentation.

On Thursday, two teams worked on different homes. Cliff, Ann, Dale, and Anne focused on a nearly finished home, completing DryLock painting, replacing basement steps, and installing bathroom trim. Meanwhile, Max, Anne, Jake, and Angela went to Kim’s home to handle drywall, flooring, and back portion demolition and rebuilding, which will likely take another week.

The weather was beautiful with near-perfect temperatures for and we are hoping that continues. It’s peak leaf peeping season, and driving the Blue Ridge Parkway is a great way to leaf peep!

NOMADS Disaster Rebuild Project - Sulphur, Oklahoma. Story Submitted by Nomads Monte & Debbie Riggle:

What a blessing to meet Dennis. He rode out the April 2024 tornado in his bathroom. He said he heard “the sound of 30,000 nails being ripped out all at once”. When he emerged, the roof, including the trusses, was gone. Dennis and his family have been working to rebuild – raising money to replace the roof, trusses, and windows. They stripped the house back to the studs and rewired. Nomads are now working with Recovering Oklahomans After Disaster (disasterroad.org) to restore Dennis’ home.

Week 1 had us stripping and repairing the subfloor and replacing more windows. In Week 2, we started insulation, siding, and drywall. Recovery in Sulphur, Oklahoma, continues to be a community effort; United Way is funding materials, and we’ve been warmly welcomed by members of the Sulphur Recovery Task Force.

A special shout-out to Smokin’ Joe's RV Park for donating great RV parking in Davis, OK.

Please give the Sulphur DR Team a thanks in the comments!
